The Port Royal and Augusta Railway was a South Carolina railroad that existed in the latter half of the 19th century.
The Port Royal Railroad Company was chartered in 1856 and the line was completed in 1870. [1] In 1873, the Georgia Railroad provided financial assistance to the Port Royal Railroad Company, but Port Royal Railroad Company defaulted in November 1873 and the railroad was sold to the Georgia Railroad under foreclosure in June 1878, with the Union Trust Company of New York as Trustees. [2] The Georgia Railroad reorganized it under the name Port Royal and Augusta Railway, [1] and the company expanded. [3]
In 1881 Georgia Railroad leased its rail lines for 99 years to Colonel William M. Wadley, who assigned half of the interest to Louisville and Nashville Railroad and the other half to Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. [4] That same year, Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia acquired controlling stock in Port Royal and Augusta Railway. [1]
In 1893, the State of South Carolina filed suit in State of South Carolina v. Port Royal and Augustra Railway Company, alleging that Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia was intentionally diverting trade from Port Royal to its own lines by misuse of its voting power. [5] Under the directors they appointed, the State alleged, the facilities of Port Royal Railroad Company had been allowed to deteriorate. [3] Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia was forced into receivership and sold, reorganized as Central of Georgia Railway. Central's purchasers, Ryan and Thomas, claimed to have purchased the company's interest in the lease, a claim denied by one of the receivers. [6] Louisville and Nashville Railroad had continued to pay their lease and receive their profits, while Central of Georgia had not. In light of this, the Port Royal and Augusta Railway Company filed suited against Central of Georgia for unpaid leases. [7] However, in 1894, before resolution of any suit, the State of Georgia repealed the charter of the Port Royal and Augusta Railway and liquidated its assets, rendering legal action moot. [8]
By 1898, The Port Royal and Augusta Railway and the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway had been combined into the new Charleston and Western Carolina Railway. [9] Today the segment between Augusta and Yemassee are part of the CSX Augusta Subdivision, while the segment south of Yemassee to Seabrook are part of the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority and the Spanish Moss Trail.
The Southern Railway was a class 1 railroad based in the Southern United States between 1894 and 1982, when it merged with the Norfolk & Western to form Norfolk Southern. The railroad was the product of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized and recombined beginning in the 1830s, formally becoming the Southern Railway in 1894.

The Georgia Railroad and Banking Company also seen as "GARR", was a historic railroad and banking company that operated in the U.S. state of Georgia. In 1967 it reported 833 million revenue-ton-miles of freight and 3 million passenger-miles; at the end of the year it operated 331 miles (533 km) of road and 510 miles (820 km) of track.
The Plant System named after its owner, Henry B. Plant, was a system of railroads and steamboats in the U.S. South, taken over by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. The original line of the system was the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway, running across southern Georgia. The Plant Investment Company was formed in 1882 to lease and buy other railroads and expand the system. Other major lines incorporated into the system include the Savannah and Charleston Railroad and the Brunswick and Western Railroad.
The Central of Georgia Railway started as the Central Rail Road and Canal Company in 1833. As a way to better attract investment capital, the railroad changed its name to Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. This railroad was constructed to join the Macon and Western Railroad at Macon, Georgia, in the United States, and run to Savannah. This created a rail link from Chattanooga, on the Tennessee River, to seaports on the Atlantic Ocean. It took from 1837 to 1843 to build the railroad from Savannah to the eastern bank of the Ocmulgee River at Macon; a bridge into the city was not built until 1851.
The Georgia Southwestern Railroad is a Class III short line railroad company that operates over 234 miles (377 km) of track in southwestern Georgia and southeastern Alabama. Beginning in 1989 as a division of the South Carolina Central Railroad on a pair of former CSX Transportation lines, the railroad has since undergone a number of transformations through abandonments and acquisitions, before arriving at its current form. The railroad was formerly a RailAmerica property before going independent, and in 2008 it was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming Inc.
The Augusta and Knoxville Railroad (A&K) was a railroad company that operated on 66 miles (106 km) of track between Augusta, Georgia, and Greenwood, South Carolina, from 1882 to 1886. It was merged with three other companies to form the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway, which was reorganized in 1896 as the Charleston and Western Carolina Railway.
Augusta and Savannah Railroad was incorporated in Georgia by special act of the General Assembly, approved December 31, 1838, as Augusta and Waynesboro Railroad Company. The name was changed to Augusta and Savannah Railroad on February 16, 1856.
The South Carolina Rail Road Company was a railroad company that operated in South Carolina from 1843 to 1894, when it was succeeded by the Southern Railway. It was formed in 1844 by the merger of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company (SCC&RR) into the Louisville, Cincinnati and Charleston Railroad Company. It was built with a track gauge of 5 ft.
The Charleston and Western Carolina Railway (C&WC) was formed in 1896 to operate the lines of the former Port Royal and Augusta Railway (PR&A) and the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway (PR&WC). The PR&A and PR&WC had originally been part of the Central of Georgia Railroad but the South Carolina Legislature had forced the railroad to give up the subsidiary lines. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) took over the C&WC in 1897 but operated it as a subsidiary until 1959 when the ACL fully absorbed it. Much of the original system is still in use by ACL successor CSX Transportation.
The New York Railways Company operated street railways in Manhattan, New York City, United States between 1911 and 1925. The company went into receivership in 1919 and control was passed to the New York Railways Corporation in 1925 after which all of its remaining lines were replaced with bus routes.
The Carolina Piedmont Railroad is a class III railroad and subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. operating in the Upstate region of South Carolina. From an interchange with CSX Transportation at Laurens the railroad runs 34 miles (55 km) to the northwest, terminating at East Greenville.
The original Georgia and Alabama Railroad was based in Rome, GA, incorporated in 1853, and started initial rail construction in 1857. In August 1866, the G&A officially consolidated with the Dalton and Jacksonville Railroad and the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad Company with the intent to create a consolidated rail system from Selma, AL to Dalton, GA. The consolidated corporation was to do business under the name of the latter, but it officially took the name Selma, Rome and Dalton Railroad Company in December of that same year. Still, in some cases, business continued under the name of Georgia and Alabama Railroad. For instance, in May 1868, a contract was executed to the Georgia and Alabama Railroad, leasing 100 African American convicts in the state of Georgia to work for the railroad company without pay.
The Savannah Valley Railroad was a railroad company in the U.S. state of Georgia in the early 1880s. It was merged by its lessor, the Port Royal and Augusta Railway, with the Augusta and Knoxville Railroad, Greenwood, Laurens and Spartanburg Railroad and the Greenville and Laurens Railroad into the Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway on October 27, 1886.
The Port Royal and Western Carolina Railway (PR&WC) was a railroad company in the southern United States that operated on 229 miles (369 km) of 4 ft 9 in gauge track. It was formed in 1886 by the merger of the Augusta and Knoxville Railroad, Greenwood, Laurens and Spartanburg Railroad, Savannah Valley Railroad and the Greenville and Laurens Railroad, which then joined with Port Royal and Augusta Railway.
The Port Royal Railroad was a South Carolina railroad that was constructed following the American Civil War. The line was chartered in 1856 but wasn't built until 1870. By 1871, it ran from Port Royal, South Carolina, to Yemassee, South Carolina. It was extended to Augusta, Georgia in 1873. That same year, the company declared bankruptcy and was sold to the new Port Royal and Augusta Railway in 1878.
The Greenwood, Laurens and Spartanburg Railroad was a South Carolina railroad company begun after Reconstruction.
Augusta Union Station was a train depot in Augusta, Georgia at 525 8th Street, serving trains from its opening in 1903 to its closing in 1968. The Spanish Renaissance styled building was in central Augusta at Barrett Square, five blocks from the banks of the Savannah River.
The Old Colony Street Railway Company was a horse-drawn and electric streetcar railroad operated on the streets of Boston, Massachusetts and communities south of the city. Founded in 1881 as the Brockton Street Railway Company, via lease and merger it became a primary mass transit provider for southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Its immediate successor was the Bay State Street Railway, and its modern successor is the state-run Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
