Portrait of the Duke of Clarence is a portrait painting by the Irish artist Martin Archer Shee depicting the future William IV, then Duke of Clarence. [1] [2]
The third son of George III, Clarence was not considered likely to inherit the throne and joined the Royal Navy. He is shown in the full dress uniform of an admiral, wearing the Order of the Garter. [3] After the death of his elder brother George IV in 1830, William succeeded to the throne. Archer Shee was President of the Royal Academy during William's reign, following Thomas Lawrence in the post. He also painted William while he was King.
Today the work is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, which acquired it in 1928. [4] Archer Shee also produced a near contemporary painting of Clarence in the robes of a peer which he exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in 1800, which is now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. The Trial of Queen Caroline is an 1823 history painting by the British artist George Hayter. It depicts the events of 1820, in which George IV, who had recently succeeded to the throne, attempted to divorce his long-estranged wife, Caroline of Brunswick. In order to secure his divorce, George had a special bill moved in the House of Lords. The Lords heard evidence of the Queen's adultery, but with public opinion strongly in Caroline's favour, the measure was ultimately withdrawn by the government. Caroline remained married to George until her death the following year.
Portrait of David Garrick is a 1770 painting by the British artist Thomas Gainsborough. A half-length portrait of the celebrated English actor-manager David Garrick it was exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Diarist Horace Walpole described it as "very like". Garrick, owner and star performer at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, was at the height of his fame when Gainsborough painted him. It was painted in Bath.
Sir Walter Scott is a portrait painting by the English artist Thomas Lawrence of the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Begun in 1820, it was completed in 1826 and exhibited at the 1827 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Lawrence was Britain's foremost society portraitist of the Regency era and was commissioned by George IV, a regular patron of the artist for whom he supplied various paintings for the Waterloo Chamber, to depict Scott for a fee of three hundred guineas.
