The Presbyterian Church of Belize is a Protestant church in the Reformed tradition. God is at work in Belize. The Presbyterian Church in Belize (PCB) is committed to the authority of the Word of God and the faithful proclamation of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. There are a number of churches as well as church plants and the denomination runs a medical clinic as well as a high school, primary education schools and preschools [1]

History

The oldest Presbyterian church in Belize is St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Belize City, [3] which was established in 1850 by Scottish settlers with public financial support. The church's reach was confined largely to the European population of Belize City, but in 1958 Presbyterian missionary Don Manuel Beltran – a Maya – was sent by the National Presbyterian Church in Mexico to work with Maya speakers in Belize. He gradually attracted congregations in Cristo Rey, San José, Patchakan, San Victor and Concepcion. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church joined with Mayan and Spanish-speaking congregations and formed the national Presbyterian church of Belize in 1987, with support from the Presbyterian Church in America's "Mission to the World." A ministry among Belize's Chinese population was established in 1988. [4] [5]

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

St. Andrew's was originally affiliated with the Free Church of Scotland and the first pastor served for almost 25 years. During the early years of the 20th century, the church was only open intermittently. At times it was administered by other branches of the Protestant church and at times considered merging with the Methodists and Anglicans. The church maintained its Presbyterian heritage, however, in spite of the pressure to merge. [6]

Unity Presbyterian Church

Unity Presbyterian Church was built to establish a church in a poor area of Belize City that was struck hard by a hurricane in 2000 which caused severe flooding in the area. The church received assistance from charitable organisations. [7]

There are 17 churches and church plants in the country today. [8]

Seminary and education

Belize Presbyterian Theological Seminary was founded in 2004 to train pastors. Classes are held in English, which is the official language of Belize. The students are Mayan, Chinese, and Creole who study over a period of three years.

The president of the Seminary is Rev. Refael Ku, the board of directors comprises Belizean pastors, church elders, and MTW[ clarification needed ] representatives. The Presbyterian Church of Belize also sponsors primary schools and high schools. [8]

National Presbyterian Church in Mexico

The National Presbyterian Church in Mexico is the second-largest Protestant church, and the largest Reformed denomination in Mexico. It is present throughout the country, and is particularly strong in the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes and Mexico City.

The Presbyterian Church of Colombia was established by the US Presbyterian Churches. The first Presbyterian Missionary was Henry Barrington Pratt who came to Colombia in 1856, sent by the board of foreign missions of what is now called Presbyterian Church (USA). Congregations were established in the main areas, big cities, and the mission spread over a large part of the country. Presbyterian work progressed till 1936. In 1937 the Presbyterian Synod was formed. The church had 3 Presbyteries. Since 1982 it has its own theological Seminary.

The London Missionary Society started missions work in the 18th century. At the turn of the 19th century the London Missionary Society gave way to the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society. The church currently has 90 parishes and 100 house fellowships with 30,000 members. The church is a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches and has relationships with the Maói Protestant Church, Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Presbyterian Church in Vanuatu.

The International Presbyterian Church is a Reformed church in Europe, that holds to the Presbyterian confession of faith, with common commitments, purpose and accountability and government.

The Evangelical Reformed Church in Japan was founded by South African missionaries. They formed their first congregation in Oita Prefecture. Japanese pastors joined this work. Two mission congregations were founded. The sect adheres to the Apostles' Creed and the Westminster Confession of Faith.

In South Korea, there are roughly 20.5 million Christians of whom 15 million are Protestants; of those some 9 to 10 million are Presbyterians. Presbyterians in South Korea worship in over 100 different Presbyterian denominational churches who trace their history back to the United Presbyterian Assembly.

The Presbyterian Church in Korea (SunGyo) is a small Presbyterian denomination in South Korea with about 1,000 members and 10 congregations and 56 ordained pastors. It subscribes to the Apostles Creed and Westminster Confession.

The Reformed Church in Zimbabwe was founded by Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa missionaries in 1891. Andrew A. Louw begun to preach among Shona people. The worship language of churches was Afrikaans and English. Later the denomination expanded among Nyanja people. In 1995 a new center was opened in Dete. The church subscribes the Apostles Creed, Athanasian Creed, Nicene Creed, Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Canons of Dort. It had 46 congregations and 150 house fellowships and about 90,000 members in 2004.

The Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDongYeChong) is a Reformed and Presbyterian denomination in South Korea. Under the leadership of Rev. Chun Byung-Hun, Rev. Choi Young-Su and Lee Sang-Yun the denomination was founded in 1988 at Seoul YeChin Church. In 2004 there was 32,178 members in 65 congregations served by 70 ordained ministers the church had 7 Presbyteries and a General assembly. It subscribes the Apostles Creed and Westminster Confession.

The Presbyterian Church in Korea (Ko-Ryu-Anti-Accusation) is a conservative Presbyterian denomination in South Korea. It split from the Presbyterian Church in Korea (Koshin). Koshin General assembly was divided into Anti-accusation and accusation groups. The General assembly decided to bring song Sang-Suk to court the anti accusation group separated in 1976. Later KoRyu divided and a significant part reunited with Koshin. In 2004 it had almost 200 congregations and 66,345 members and 391 ordained ministers. The church subscribes the Apostles Creed and Westminster Confession.

The Presbyterian Church in Korea is a Reformed Presbyterian denomination in South Korea. The church was constituted in 1985, when it split off the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDongJinRi). The first moderator was Pastor Lee Geun-Su. The Apostles Creed and the Westminster Confession are the official standards. In 2004 there was 11,765 members in 100 congregations.

The Kosin Presbyterian Church in Korea, also called Korea-pa, is an Evangelical Reformed and Presbyterian denomination in the Republic of South Korea. Although, congregations have spread all over North America and in many other countries.
