Press Information Department or PID, is a government body responsible for disseminating government information to the media and a media regulatory organization. It is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] [2] It is under the Ministry of Information. [3]

History

In August 2014 Press Information Department ordered the press to not use the term indigenous when referring to tribal communities in Bangladesh. [4] In February 2017 Begum Kamrun Nahar became the Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department. She was the first female head of the Press Information Department. [5]

The Press Information Department ordered cable operators from providing foreign channels that air commercials of local companies on 3 January 2017. [6] On 9 November 2017 the government of Bangladesh announced that all news websites would have to register with Press Information Department. [7] The Editor's Council asked the government to exempt online newspapers from registration. [8] Government officials hold press conferences in the Press Information Department Conference Hall. [9]

Television is one of the most popular forms of media and information in Bangladesh. It was one of the first countries in South Asia to introduce television on 25 December 1964, in the then East Pakistan under the state-owned television network Pakistan Television Corporation in its capital, Dhaka. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, the Dhaka television station of PTV was renamed to Bangladesh Television, which had a monopoly on the country's television industry until 1997, with the launch of ATN Bangla on satellite television. Since then, the number of privately owned television channels saw a tremendous rise in the Bangladeshi television market.

The Bangladeshi diaspora are people of Bangladeshi birth or descent who live outside of Bangladesh. First-generation migrants may have moved abroad from Bangladesh for various reasons including better living conditions, to escape poverty, to support their financial condition, or to send money back to families there. The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment estimates there are 13 million Bangladeshis living abroad, the fourth highest among the top 20 countries of origin for international migrants. Annual remittances transferred to Bangladesh were almost $22.1 billion in 2021, the seventh highest in the world and the third highest in South Asia.

The mass media in Bangladesh refers to the print, broadcast and online mass media available in Bangladesh. The Constitution guarantees press freedom and freedom of expression within "reasonable restriction", though some media outlets have been harassed. The Bangladeshi media's rank is dropped to 146 in 2018 from its position of 144 in 2016 out of total 180 countries on the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index, with 1st being most free.

Kamrun Nahar is a Bangladeshi soil scientist and environmentalist. A prominent biofuels researcher of Bangladesh, her research and publications also aimed to lower dependence on petroleum based foreign oil by producing low carbon and sulphur emitting biofuels from the second generation energy crops cultivated in the unused wastelands of Bangladesh for use in home generators to supplement power.

Siddiqua Kabir was a Bangladeshi nutritionist, academic, cookbook author, and cooking show television host. A professor, Kabir hosted, and guest starred in numerous television shows featuring Bangladeshi cuisine, including Siddiqua Kabir’s Recipe on NTV Bangla.

Begum Rokeya Padak, named after Begum Rokeya, is a Bangladeshi national honour conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement. The award is given by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. The award recognises the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh</span> Human rights abuse

Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the current Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false. The current Awami League government denies involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.

Feminism in Bangladesh seeks equal rights of women in Bangladesh through social and political change. Article 28 of Bangladesh constitution states that "Women shall have equal rights with men in all spheres of the State and of public life".

Sukomal Barua is a Bangladeshi educationist. He is a Professor in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies at University of Dhaka. He has been awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2006 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to education. He is a member of advisory council in Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Murad Hasan is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member from Jamalpur-4 constituency and a former State Minister of Information served during 2019–2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Khandker Anwarul Islam</span> Bangladeshi civil servant

Khandker Anwarul Islam is a retired Bangladeshi civil servant. He had served as the country's 22nd Cabinet Secretary. Prior to that, he was the Senior Secretary of the Bridges Division under Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the ex-officio Executive Director of Bangladesh Bridge Authority before joining at cabinet secretary post on 28 October 2019.

Begum Kamrun Nahar is a former Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. She was the first woman in Bangladesh to become Principal Information Officer. She is a former Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
