Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly and Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk [lower-alpha 1] are two otome visual novel video games developed by Otomate. They were published for PlayStation Vita by Idea Factory in Japan in 2015 and 2016, and by Aksys Games in North America and Europe in 2018. Intragames and Idea Factory released Black Butterfly for Microsoft Windows in 2018, and Ashen Hawk in 2019.
In the games, the player reads the stories and make decisions that affect the direction of the plot, leading to different endings. Black Butterfly follows an amnesiac woman who is forced to partake in the black butterfly hunt, and Ashen Hawk follows a woman who is thought to be a witch and therefore disguises herself as a boy and lives outside the town.
Black Butterfly and Ashen Hawk are visual novels in which the player reads through the story and makes choices such as what the player characters should say, affecting the direction of the plot and which of the games' endings the player ends up at. The games include an interactive flowchart, which the player can use to go back and try alternative choices and keep track of what they have done in the games. [1] [2] In addition to the main scenarios, there are side stories where the player learns more about the characters. [1]
Black Butterfly follows an amnesiac woman who wakes up in a Western house and is attacked by monsters. She meets men in the house who similarly cannot remember their pasts, and the group is forced to partake in the black butterfly hunt to gather the kaleidoscope fragments the monsters possess. [3]
Ashen Hawk follows a woman whose right eye turns red when she feels strong emotions; in her hometown, women with red eyes are considered witches, so she disguises herself as a boy and lives in a tower outside the town. [3]
Black Butterfly and Ashen Hawk were developed by Otomate, [4] and were directed by Momoko Terashima and written by Toono Chiharu and Yuriji. The character design and artwork was handled by Satoru Yuiga, and the music was composed by Shigeki Hayashi and Yuji Yoshino. [5] [6] [7] Screen Mode performed Black Butterfly's opening theme, "Bloody Rain"; [8] Akiko Shikata performed Ashen Hawk's, "Haizora no Shizuku"; [9] and Eiko Shimamiya performed both games' ending themes, "Kokuchō no Psychedelica" and "Vermelho". The games were originally published in Japan by Idea Factory for PlayStation Vita: Black Butterfly on January 29, 2015, and Ashen Hawk on June 29, 2016. [2] [11] Aksys Games announced at Anime Expo 2017 that they would publish the games internationally: [12] Black Butterfly was published in North America and Europe on April 27, 2018, [1] [13] and Ashen Hawk on June 29, 2018. [1] [14] Along with 7'scarlet , they were part of Aksys Games' "Summer of Mystery" campaign; players who purchased all three can get a set of enamel pins. The North American physical releases of Black Butterfly and Ashen Hawk also include a set of character cards. [15] A Microsoft Windows version of Black Butterfly with English, Japanese, Korean, and traditional Chinese language options was published by Intragames and Idea Factory on November 15, 2018; [16] [17] a Windows version of Ashen Hawk, with the same language options, is planned to be released in Q1/Q2 2019. Frontier Works released the ending theme to Black Butterfly as a single on January 28, 2015, [10] and the full soundtrack albums for the two games on November 30, 2016. [9]

Both games were generally well received by critics, according to the review aggregator Metacritic. [19] [20] Black Butterfly was the 18th best selling video game in Japan during its debut week, selling 5,319 copies, [21] while Ashen Hawk did not chart at all. [22]
Famitsu enjoyed the games' dark atmosphere and the mysterious story, and praised the artwork and music. They also enjoyed the flowchart system that shows the story routes. [2] [11]

Compile Heart is a Japanese video game developer founded on June 2, 2006 as a subsidiary of Idea Factory. The company was formerly managed by Compile's former executive Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani, most well known as the creator of the Madou Monogatari and Puyo Puyo series, before his retirement in December 2012. Compile Heart is primarily known for its Hyperdimension Neptunia and Record of Agarest War brands.
Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart is a 2014 tactical role-playing game developed by Compile Heart and Sting Entertainment. The game is a spin-off title of the Hyperdimension Neptunia game series featuring Noire as the main character. The game was released in Japan on May 29, 2014, and in North America and Europe in February 2015. It was originally a PlayStation Vita exclusive. A port for Microsoft Windows was released on April 26, 2016.

Zero Time Dilemma, also known as Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma, is an adventure video game developed by Chime, and published by Spike Chunsoft and Aksys Games. It is the third entry in the Zero Escape series, following Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (2009) and Virtue's Last Reward (2012). Blue Reflection is a role-playing video game developed by Gust. It was published by Koei Tecmo in March 2017 in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, and was released in September 2017 in North America and Europe for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows. The player takes the role of Hinako Shirai, a ballet dancer who due to a knee injury no longer can dance, but who is given magical power allowing her to fight and move freely. The game follows a day cycle, which sees Hinako attend school and spend time with classmates, and visit another world where she fights monsters in a turn-based battle system. By becoming close friends with her classmates, Hinako can use support abilities from them in battle.
Tokyo Tattoo Girls, known in Japan as Irezumi no Kuni, is a strategy video game developed by Sushi Typhoon Games, Nikkatsu's video game label. It was published for PlayStation Vita as a digital-only title in Japan by Nikkatsu in 2016, and was released internationally for PlayStation Vita and Microsoft Windows by NIS America in 2017. Unlike the original Japanese release, NIS America's Vita version was released physically.
Code: Realize − Guardian of Rebirth is an otome visual novel video game developed by Otomate for PlayStation Vita, released in 2014 in Japan and in 2015 in North America and Europe. The game features a steampunk aesthetic and a cast of literary and historical figures, including Arsène Lupin, Abraham Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, Impey Barbicane, and Count Saint-Germain. 7'scarlet is an otome visual novel video game developed by Otomate and Toybox Inc. It was released for the PlayStation Vita by Idea Factory in 2016 in Japan and by Aksys Games in 2018 in North America and Europe. The player reads through the story, making choices that determine its direction, and takes the role of college student Ichiko Hanamaki, who goes to the town of Okunezato to investigate the disappearance of her brother together with her friend Hino Kagutsuchi.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark is a horror visual novel adventure game developed and published by Experience, and is the first entry in the Spirit Hunter series. It was originally released in June 2017 for PlayStation Vita in Japan, and was later ported to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The game was published worldwide by Aksys Games in October 2018 for the same platforms except Xbox One, and was additionally released for Microsoft Windows in both English and Japanese in April 2019. It is followed by two sequels: 2018's Spirit Hunter: NG, and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II.

It is the third entry in the Spirit Hunter series, following 2017's Spirit Hunter: Death Mark and 2018's Spirit Hunter: NG. The game was released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on December 1, 2022 in Japan, and was released by Aksys Games for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Windows on February 15, 2024 worldwide.
Bad Apple Wars is an otome visual novel video game developed by Otomate, exclusively released for the PlayStation Vita by Idea Factory in 2015 in Japan and by Aksys Games in 2017 in North America and Europe. The game follows a student named Rinka who, after dying in an accident wakes up in an afterlife modelled around a high school setting. It launched to favourable reviews by Western critics, who generally praised the story.
