The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, which consists mostly, but not exclusively, of territories of the former British Empire. The event was first held in 1930 as the British Empire Games and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has successively run every four years since. The event was called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. The event removed the word British from its title for the 1978 Games and has maintained its current name ever since.

The Saint Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) representing Saint Kitts and Nevis at the Olympic Games. It is also the body responsible for Saint Kitts and Nevis's representation at the Commonwealth Games. The executive board consists of the president, secretary general, vice president, assistant secretary general, and four members. The president is Alphonso Bridgewater and the secretary general is Glenville Jeffers. The committee has overseen six Olympic and five Commonwealth Games, winning one gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, by Kim Collins in the 100 meters.

Helen Catherine Burkart is a retired British sprinter. As Helen Barnett, she competed in the women's 400 metres at the 1984 Summer Olympics. She represented England in the 200 metres event, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Four years later she represented England in the 400 metres event, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. She married the Swiss sprinter Stefan Burkart in 1986, and went on to represent Switzerland at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the women's 4 × 400 metres relay.
Diane Bell is a British former judoka. She won the 56–61 kg event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but at the time women's judo was still a demonstration sport, so unlike the men Bell did not enter the list of Olympic medalists in judo. She also won two World Judo Championships, a Commonwealth Games gold and three European Judo Championships.

The men's light heavyweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1988 Summer Olympics. The weight class allowed boxers of up to 81 kilograms to compete. The competition was held from 21 September to 2 October 1988. 26 boxers from 26 nations competed. Having started boxing just four years prior, Andrew Maynard won the gold medal.
Carlos Sao Murry Ulberg is a New Zealand professional mixed martial artist and former kickboxer. He currently competes in the Light Heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As of July 2, 2024, he is #10 in the UFC light heavyweight rankings.
