Punjab Gramin Bank (PGB) is a Regional Rural Bank (RRB) operating in the state of Punjab, India. It was created on 1 January 2019 following the amalgamation of the earlier Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank and Satluj Gramin Bank, as approved under a notification of the Ministry of Finance issued under the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976. [1] The unified bank functions under the sponsorship of Punjab National Bank. [2]
The predecessor RRBs were set up between 1976 and 2008 to expand formal credit delivery in rural Punjab under the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976. [3] In September 2018, the Department of Financial Services issued a notification approving the consolidation of Punjab’s RRBs into a single institution to improve credit flow, reduce operational overlap and strengthen rural banking infrastructure. [4] The bank began operations as a merged entity on 1 January 2019 with its head office in Kapurthala. [5]

The Regional Rural Bank logo selection process involved a public poll conducted by NABARD in June 2025 to choose a new, common logo for the amalgamated Regional Rural Banks in India, the initiative aimed at creating a unified brand identity for rural banking after the amalgamation of several RRBs. the poll allowed participants to vote on six logo concepts and nine design variations. The initiative was called OneRRBOneLogo reflecting the vision of having a single identity for the RRBs.
Punjab Gramin Bank operates a network of 458 branches across agricultural and semi-urban regions of Punjab. [6] Its service area includes major districts such as Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Bathinda and Patiala. [7] The branch distribution reflects an emphasis on rural credit and inclusion programmes.
The bank offers deposit accounts, agricultural credit, MSME loans, dairy finance, SHG-linked lending, retail loans and micro-insurance products. [8] As an RRB, PGB adheres to Reserve Bank of India guidelines on priority sector lending and rural outreach. [9] Its lending portfolio is influenced by NABARD’s credit planning and district-level development frameworks. [10]
PGB offers several digital channels including mobile banking, internet banking, AEPS, micro-ATMs, RuPay cards and UPI-based services. [11] Its digital adoption programmes operate in alignment with RBI’s financial inclusion agenda and the national digital payments mission. [12]
The bank plays an important role in providing access to formal credit and savings in rural Punjab. It participates in SHG-Bank Linkage Programmes under NABARD, [13] undertakes Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) activities, [14] and supports Aadhaar-enabled payment systems. [15]
