Qamrul Islam (born 1 June 1950) [1] is an Awami League politician. He is a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Dhaka-2 constituency, [2] [3] and also a former minister of food from 2014 to 2018. [4] [5] Islam was the state minister of law,justice and parliamentary affairs in the second Hasina cabinet. [6]
Ismal was former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's defense lawyer during the 2007-2008 caretaker government rule in the Niko corruption case along with barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh. [7]
Islam was elected to parliament in 2008 as a candidate of the Awami League from Dhaka-2. [8] He received 180,172 votes while his nearest rival,Md. Matiur Rahman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,received 124,600 votes. [8] He was appointed the State minister for Law,Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in 2009. [9] He prepared the Cantonment Board eviction notice which was sent to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to evict her from her cantonment residence. [10] He recommended the removal of about 7.5 thousand criminal cases filed against Awami League politicians under the 2007-2008 Fakruddin Ahmed led caretaker government. [11] The Bangladesh Nationalist Party criticized him for not removing cases filed against its leaders and alleged the government was filing new cases against them. [11] He alleged the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was responsible for the Bangladesh Rifles mutiny in an effort to overthrow the government of Sheikh Hasina. [12] He was the Joint Secretary General of the Dhaka unit of the Awami League. [13]
Islam was elected unopposed in the 2014 election after other major parties boycotted the election. [14] He was appointed the Minister of Food in 2014. [15] He had been critical of the United States saying,"The US is the creator of the IS. The US is the original creator of militants. The US is trying to enter Bangladesh,saying militancy exists here.". [16] Bangladesh Nationalist Party demanded his resignation in May 2015 alleging he had imported rotten wheat from Brazil. [17]
Islam was convicted on contempt of court charges in 2016 over his comments on the conviction of Mir Quasem Ali by the International Crimes Tribunal. [18] [19] [20] Shahdeen Malik claimed he had lost his right to ministerial position after the conviction and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party called for his resignation. [18] Anisul Huq,Minister of Law,said he did not have to resign as the judges did not call for it but refrained from saying much as he feared he could be found guilty of contempt of court. [18] He and A. K. M. Mozammel Huq,Minister of Liberation War Affairs were fined 50 thousand BDT each for making contemptuous statements about Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. [21] He called for Sinha's removal after meeting with Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers’Association at the office of Dhaka Lawyers’Association in August 2017. [22]
Islam was blamed for increase in rise prices in 2017 due to lack of preparation after rice fields were damaged in floods. [23] He denied reports of the government having low stock of food. [24]
Islam served as the Minister of Food till 2018. [15] He was re-elected in 2018 as a candidate of the Awami League from Dhaka-2. [25] He received 339,581 votes while his nearest rival,Irfan Ibne Aman Omi of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,received 47,195. [25] He was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Ministry. [9] In February 2022,he was appointed presidium member of the Awami League along with Mofazzal Hossain Maya. [26]
Islam was re-elected on 7 January 2024 with 154,448 votes while his nearest rival,Dr Habibur Rahman,received 10,635 votes. [27]
Islam was arrested from Uttara on 18 November 2024 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government. [15] He was charged with the death of a protestor in the 2024 quota reform protests. [28] The Anti-Corruption Commission began an investigation against him,his wife,and children. [29]

He retired from political activities and from the post of president of Gano Forum in October 2023.

The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina,the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated.
Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain is a Bangladeshi politician. He is the former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Faridpur-3 constituency. He served as a minister of the Ministry of Labour and Employment,Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment,and Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Co-operative.
Amir Hossain Amu is a Bangladeshi politician,a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Jhalokati-2 constituency,and served as the minister of industries during 2014–2019. He is currently the coordinator and spokesman for the Awami League-led 14-party Grand Alliance.
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was another landslide victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence,and were widely considered by opposition politicians and the international community to be rigged.
Hasan Mahmud is a politician from Bangladesh Awami League. He is a former minister of foreign affairs for the fifth Hasina ministry,and a former member of parliament from Chittagong-7. In 2019,he was appointed as the minister of information and broadcasting for the fourth Hasina ministry. Mahmud is accused as one of the perpetrators of the July massacre. He is currently wanted by Bangladesh Police for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Student–People's uprising of 2024.
The Third Hasina ministry was the cabinet of the People‘s Republic of Bangladesh headed by Sheikh Hasina that was formed after the 2014 general election which was held on 5 January 2014. The Awami League was assured of victory,with its candidates declared victors in 127 of the 154 uncontested seats by default. The elected MPs and Cabinet were sworn in on 9 January.
Sheikh Rehana Siddiq is a Bangladesh Awami League politician. She is the younger sister of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the daughter of the first President of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She is also the mother of Tulip Siddiq,a British Labour Party politician and elected Member of Parliament and City Minister.
Anisul Huq is a principal member of Awami League and Sheikh Hasina's toppled regime currently in custody of Bangladesh Police for his active involvement in July massacre.
AKM Mozammel Haque is a politician from Bangladesh,representing the Bangladesh Awami League party. He was the Minister for Liberation War Affairs from 2014 to 2024 and is also a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Gazipur-1 constituency.
Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya is a senior Bangladesh Awami League politician who served as a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chandpur-2 constituency and a minister of several ministries. On 19 November 2021 he nominated for Bangladesh Awami League Presidium member. He received the Bir Bikram,the third highest award for gallantry,for his role in the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was the general secretary for the Dhaka chapter of his party until 2016. He won the Independence Award in 2023 for his contribution to the field of independence and liberation war.
Shamsur Rahman Sherif was a Bangladesh Awami League politician who served as minister of land. He was a 5-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Pabna-4 constituency.
The Bangladesh Krishak League was established on 19 April 1972,at the behest of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Lawyer Sirajul Islam Khan was appointed as the convener of the constitution-making committee and founding vice-president of the Krishka League Central Committee. Krishka League is closely associated with Bangladesh Awami League and is working as one of its affiliated organizations. Samir Chanda is currently the chairman of the Krishak League and Umme Kulsum is the general secretary.
Mizanur Rahman Minu is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the former mayor and member of parliament of Rajshahi-2.
Shahed Nuruddin is a Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. He was the trial judge in the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack case.
2024 Bangladesh post-resignation violence took place after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina,targeting Awami League supporters,religious minorities,government and security officials. On the day of the resignation,25 police officers were killed. According to the Daily Sun,at least 119 were killed that day. According to Prothom Alo,1494 sculptures and monuments were vandalized across Bangladesh after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
