Quincy Adams Sawyer is a 1922 American silent drama film directed by Clarence G. Badger. Distributed by Metro Pictures, the film is written by Bernard McConville, based on the 1900 novel Quincy Adams Sawyer and Mason's Corner Folks, written by Charles Felton Pidgin. The novel had sold over 1.5 million copies at the time, and had had a successful run as a play (written by Justin Adams). (An earlier film version had been made in 1912.) Pidgin went on in later years to write two sequels to his novel due to its immense popularity. [1]
The film starred Lon Chaney, Elmo Lincoln, Barbara La Marr, Blanche Sweet, Louise Fazenda and John Bowers. Parts of the 1922 film were shot along the Columbia River in Washington State, and in Del Monte, California. A still exists showing Chaney in a scene from the film. [2] The film's tagline was "Ten million people hungrily read the novel by Charles Felton Pidgin. And the photo play, of the homespun folks of old New England, is the kind everybody enjoys.".
The film was re-released in 1927 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (after Barbara La Marr died), and is now considered a lost film. [3]
Quincy Adams Sawyer is a handsome young attorney who one day meets a girl in the park. He is immediately smitten with her, but before he can pursue her, he is summoned to the village of Mason's Corner by his father's friend Deacon Pettengill (Edward Connolly) to investigate a villainous lawyer named Obadiah Strout (Lon Chaney). They think Mrs. Putnam, a rich old woman, is being swindled by Strout. Putnam's daughter Lindy (Barbara LaMarr), a vamp, attempts to seduce Sawyer. He shows interest in her until he finds out who the girl he met in the park was: Pettengill's niece Alice who has become blind since their last meeting.
Despite this tragedy, Sawyer falls in love with Alice. Meanwhile, Strout wants to scare Sawyer away, and he convinces the bullyish Abner Stiles (Elmo Lincoln), who once committed a murder, that Sawyer is in town to investigate him. Strout succeeds in goading the brutish Stiles to assault Quincy, but having some boxing skills, the handsome young lawyer winds up giving the bully a tremendous beating.
Lindy meanwhile wants to get rid of her rival Alice and, with the help of Strout, lures the blind girl onto a boat, after which the cable is cut. The little boat is sent adrift and Alice is heading straight for the waterfalls. Quincy races to the river and, at the risk of his own life, rescues her from a fatal fall.
Overcome by all the excitement, Alice suddenly regains her eyesight. The Deacon is unaware that his daughter has been rescued and thinks that Strout has killed her. He grabs a revolver and plans to shoot Strout, but he arrives too late. He finds that Stiles, who finally realized he was being used, has already killed Strout himself in a wild rage. [4] [5]
Film magazine Moving Picture World was uninspired by the film's story, but called it an entertaining film. [5] The New York Times thought the film was 'superficial' and stated that not even Lon Chaney's acting could save it. [5] Variety praised 'the fearful hokum purveyed in the story' and was especially positive about Chaney and Elmo Lincoln. [5] Barbara La Marr received favorable reviews from the critics as well, and the film was a success at the box office. [6]

Leonidas Frank "Lon" Chaney was an American actor and makeup artist. He is regarded as one of the most versatile and powerful actors of cinema, renowned for his characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted, characters and for his groundbreaking artistry with makeup. Chaney was known for his starring roles in such silent horror films as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). His ability to transform himself using makeup techniques that he developed earned him the nickname "The Man of a Thousand Faces".

He Who Gets Slapped is a 1924 American silent psychological thriller film starring Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, and John Gilbert, and directed by Victor Sjöström. The film was written by Victor Seastrom and Carey Wilson, based on the Russian play He Who Gets Slapped by playwright Leonid Andreyev, which was completed by Andreyev in August 1915, two months before its world premiere at the Moscow Art Theatre on October 27, 1915. A critically successful Broadway production, using an English language translation of the original Russian by Gregory Zilboorg, was staged in 1922, premiering at the Garrick Theatre on January 9, 1922, with Richard Bennett (actor) playing the "HE" role on stage. The Russian original was made into a Russian movie in 1916.

The film was written by Arthur Statter and Charles Kenyon, based on a magazine story by William Dudley Pelley. This is one of the rare Lon Chaney films where he gets the girl. The film is readily available on DVD.

He performed in over 100 screen productions between 1913 and 1952 and was the first actor to portray on film novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs' fictional "jungle" character Tarzan, initially appearing in that role in the 1918 release Tarzan of the Apes.
The Monster is a 1925 American silent horror comedy film directed by Roland West, based on the stage play of the same name by Crane Wilbur, and starring Lon Chaney and comedian Johnny Arthur. The screenplay was written by Willard Mack and Albert Kenyon. The movie was directed by Wallace Worsley, and written by Philip Lonergan and Charles Kenyon, based upon the pulp novel by Gouverneur Morris. The supporting cast includes Charles Clary, Doris Pawn, Jim Mason, and Claire Adams. The copyright for the film was owned by Gouverneur Morris, who wrote the novel on which the film was based. The budget for the film was $88,868.00. Portions of the film were shot in San Francisco.

The screenplay was co-written by Rupert Julian and Elliott J. Clawson. The film's supporting cast included Elmo Lincoln, Nigel De Brulier, Harry Von Meter and Lon Chaney.
The Higher Law is a 1914 American silent drama film directed by Charles Giblyn and featuring Murdock MacQuarrie, Pauline Bush and Lon Chaney. It was written by Harry G. Stafford, based on a story by George Bronson Howard. This film was the second in a series of four films called The Adventures of Francois Villon. Lon Chaney was featured in this one, as well as in the first installment, The Oubliette (1914), but did not appear in the other two. The film is now considered to be lost. The film co-starred Millard K. Wilson, who became a lifelong friend of Chaney and later served as his director in films at M-G-M.

The Blake book on Chaney states the film was actually released earlier on December 13, 1914, but all other sources say December 27. The film is now considered to be lost.

This was one of the few silent films that subtitled the actors' dialogue at the bottom of the screen, instead of using title cards. Also, this was one of the only Lon Chaney films in which Chaney wound up getting the girl at the end of the picture. A still exists showing Lon Chaney in the role of the reporter, Dan Fisher.

Rider Haggard story called "Mr. Meeson's Will". The film was released in England as Mr. Meeson's Will. The plot concerns a marooned man's will tattooed on the back of a woman. Chaney had a relatively small part in the film, but in one scene, he does a few dance steps, which show off his grace and agility.
Flesh and Blood is a 1922 American silent drama film directed by Irving Cummings and starring Lon Chaney, Noah Beery, Edith Roberts and De Witt Jennings. The film originally had a color flashback scene with Chinese actors, but the color footage is no longer in any of the available prints. The film's working titles were Prison and Fires of Vengeance. Interior scenes were shot at Universal Studios.

Carro Morrell Clark was the founder and manager of the C. M. Clark Publishing Company, located in Boston, who, from 1900 through the end of 1906, was reported by some to be the only woman to publish books in the United States and some claimed in the world. The C. M. Clark Publishing Company operated from September 1900 to April 1912 and had its headquarters at 211 Tremont Street, Boston. The company's first release, Quincy Adams Sawyer and Mason's Corner Folks- A Story of New England Home Life by Charles Felton Pidgin, was aggressively marketed by Clark, and sold 500,000 copies. It was made into a play, a musical, and in 1922, a movie of the same title starring Lon Chaney and Blanche Sweet. Another book, Miss Petticoats, also went into theatrical production and was performed by, among others, Kathryn Osterman and the future film director, D.W. Griffith. In 1916, it was adapted as a silent film starring future Academy Award-winner Alice Brady.
Charles Felton Pidgin was an American author, statistician, and inventor. He is best known for his 1900 novel Quincy Adams Sawyer, which became successful largely due to a big marketing campaign, and was adapted for the stage and silent film.
Winifred Dunn was an American screenwriter, editor, radio scenario writer, and art critic in the early 20th century. She was one of the youngest scenario editors of the silent era and was credited with writing over 40 productions.
