Liga Nacional de Ascenso

The Liga Nacional de Ascenso is the second level of Panama's national football club championship. It was founded in 1997 and it consists of 8 teams who play to gain promotion to Liga Panameña de Fútbol. From 2008 the champion plays a playoff against the bottom team in the Liga Panameña de Fútbol in order to gain promotion while the bottom team of the league is relegated to the Copa Rommel Fernández. Before 2008 all champions were automatically promoted and the bottom team in Liga Panameña de Fútbol automatically relegated. The league presided by Ricardo Escobar.

Río Abajo is a corregimiento within Panama City, in Panamá District, Panamá Province, Panama with a population of 26,607 as of 2010. Its population as of 1990 was 33,155; its population as of 2000 was 28,714. It is a West Indian neighborhood; the unique culture of this area of Panama stems mainly from the English Caribbean people who relocated to the area from Anglophone islands in the Antilles more than a century ago, namely Jamaica and Barbados. Rio Abajo consists of over 30 streets, the most notable are 4th, 13th and 17th streets, 2 story wood houses, churches with old southern architecture. Rio Abajo is also the name of a river flowing through Rio Abajo neighborhood.

History

Río Abajo is the team that has won the most championships in the Liga Nacional de Ascenso with 3 titles, in 2008 and 2009 after defeating Orión twice 2–1 and 3–1 respectively. They have been defeated in the promotion playoff two years in a row. In 2008 they lost against Plaza Amador by a 3–2 aggregate score and on 2009 they were defeated by Alianza by 2–1 aggregate score.

Alianza F.C. (Panama)

Alianza F.C. is a professional soccer club located in Panama that plays in Liga Profesional de Fútbol the highest soccer league in Panama. They have played in the top flight since earning promotion there in 1998-99, with their best finish coming in the 2003 Clausura, where they were runners-up.

In May 2012 they beat C.A.I. and got promoted to Liga Panameña de Fútbol. [1] They were relegated back to the second level in April 2014. [2]

The Liga Nacional de Ascenso 2009 season started on February 28, 2009. The defending champion and Apertura winner was Río Abajo and the Clausura winner was Orión. On December 12, 2009 a grand final was played where Río Abajo were crowned champions of the Liga Nacional de Ascenso after defeating Orión 3–1. However Río Abajo lost the promotion play-off, but this time against Alianza in a 2–1 aggregate score, thus failing to promote to the Liga Panameña de Fútbol.
