Rafting, Kayaking and Cannoning is one of the main parts of river tourism in Nepal. Prior to the boom of the tourism industry, rivers were considered holy and the idea of fun in the river was not usual to general Nepalese. [1] From zero clients in early 70s to more than 30,000 clients in 2000, it is one of the growing industry of Nepal. [2] :45
The first commercial rafting company, Himalayan River Runners, was registered in 1979 by Al Read. This was the first rafting company not only in Nepal but the entire Asia. The headquarter of the company was in Kathmandu and was run by American and Nepali staffs. In 1976, over 100 Nepalese were trained for the rafting job. These trainees later started their own rafting companies. [2] :42-51
In 1989, Nepal Association of Rafting Agents was formally recognized by the Government. Initially, the Government required that all rafting clients pay for a permit that allowed them to participate in a rafting trip on a particular river for a specified number of days. This system was revoked in 1999. [2] :42-51
Rafting is allowed in all the rivers of Nepal.[ citation needed ] Some disturbance has been observed due to the construction of dams and weirs for hydropower production.[ citation needed ] Some popular river for rafting are listed below. [3] [4]

During the monsoon from early June to mid-September, rivers are flooded and rafting is dangerous and is not carried out. During other seasons mainly spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) is considered good for rafting. [5] During spring, flow can be quite low in smaller river. Additionally, the blowing wind on some rivers, such as the Karnali, can be an annoyance. [5]
Safety guidelines specific to rafting has not been published. Each operator has their own safety protocols. [ citation needed ] Due to which accidents occur time and again every year. Few fatalities are reported every year. Some of them are:
Rafting and white water rafting are recreational outdoor activities which use an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other body of water. This is often done on whitewater or different degrees of rough water. Dealing with risk and the need for teamwork is often a part of the experience.
Pokhara is a metropolitan city in Nepal, which serves as the capital of Gandaki Province. It is the country's largest metropolitan city in terms of area and second largest in terms of populations. The city also serves as the headquarters of Kaski District. Pokhara is located 200 kilometres west of the capital, Kathmandu. The altitude varies from 827 metres in the southern part to 1,740 metres in the north. The Annapurna Range, with three out of the ten highest peaks in the world — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and Manaslu — is within 15–35 mi (24–56 km) of the valley.
Necon Air was a Nepalese airline based in Kathmandu. The airline was Nepal's first private airline company and was established on 14 September 1992 with one Hawker Siddeley HS 748 aircraft. The airline indefinitely suspended flights in 2003 due to financial difficiculties and was delisted from the Nepal Stock Exchange in 2006.
Dailekh District a part of Karnali Pradesh, is one of the 77 districts of Nepal. The district, with Dailekh as its district headquarters, covers an area of 1,502 km2 (580 sq mi) and had a population of 225,201 in 2001 and 261,770 in 2011.
Kaski District (Nepali: कास्की जिल्ला [kaski], a part of Gandaki Pradesh, is one of the seventy-seven districts of Nepal. The name is disambiguated from Kaskikot, the ancient Kaski Kingdom.
Rukum District was a "hill" and "mountain" district some 280 km (170 mi) west of Kathmandu partially belonging to Province No. 5 and partially to Karnali Pradesh before split into two districts Western Rukum and Eastern Rukum after the state's reconstruction of administrative divisions in 2017. Rukum covers an area of 2,877 km2 (1,111 sq mi) with population of 207,290 in 2011 Nepal census. Musikot was the district's administrative center.
Surkhet District is the province capital of Karnali province.Surkhet is the one of the ten districts of Karnali located about 600 kilometres (373 mi) west of the national capital Kathmandu. The district's area is 2,488.64 square kilometres (960.87 sq mi)which is longest in Nepal. It had 288,527 population in 2001 and 350,804 in 2011 which male comprised 169,461 and female 181,381. It is the district headquarters of surkhet and commercial hub of the Karnali state of the new federal republic.
Pokhara Airport, is a domestic airport serving Pokhara in Nepal. Following a new agreement on air travel between India and Nepal, Pokhara Airport will be replaced by Nepal's second international airport, Pokhara International Airport in 2021.
The Nepalese Army Air Service is the army aviation branch of the Nepalese Army, also known as the Nepal Army Air Wing. Nepal has no separate Air Force but the Nepalese Army operates several aircraft within the army aviation branch.
Tourism is the largest industry in Nepal and its largest source of foreign exchange and revenue. Possessing eight of the ten highest mountains in the world, Nepal is a hot spot destination for mountaineers, rock climbers and people seeking adventure. The Hindu and Buddhist heritage of Nepal and its cool weather are also strong attractions.
Nepathya is a Nepalese music band that was formed in the early 1990s by three students from Pokhara while studying in Kathmandu, Nepal.They started recording songs which after 25 years have made them the greatest band ever of Nepal. Nepathya is best known for blending folk melodies with modern western-influenced rock music. Nepathya has enjoyed both commercial and critical success. Nepathya is well known for contemporary tunes that have strong ties with indigenous music and songs sung using regional dialects from rural Nepal.
Mahendra Highway, also called East-West Highway runs across the Terai geographical region of Nepal, from Mechinagar in the east to Bhim Datta in the west, cutting across the entire width of the country. It is the longest highway in Nepal and was constructed by CPWD/PWD Nepali and Indian engineers.
The Bheri River is a major tributary of the Karnali River draining the western Dhaulagiri range in western Nepal. It has three important upper tributaries. Sani Bheri River drains southern slopes of this range while Thuli Bheri River drains northern slopes. Another tributary Uttar Ganga drains Dhorpatan Valley to the south of the Dhaulagiris. Downstream, the Bheri flows through Surkhet Valley before joining the Karnali River in the Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalaya.
Pokhara Valley is the second-largest valley in the hilly region of Nepal. It lies in the western part of Nepal. The cities of Pokhara and Lekhnath are in the valley. It is located in Gandaki zone, 203 kilometres (126 mi) west of Kathmandu Valley. The city of Pokhara is one of the major cities of Nepal and it, like Kathmandu Valley, is extremely vulnerable to earthquakes due to its clay soil and liquefaction potential.
The Trishuli River is one of the major tributaries of the Narayani River basin in central Nepal. It originates in Tibet as a stream and enters Nepal at Gyirong Town.
Devi's Falls is a waterfall located at Pokhara in Kaski District, Nepal.
Karna Shakya is a Nepalese environmentalist, conservationist, hotel entrepreneur, writer and philanthropist. Shakya is a forester by academic qualification. He served as a wildlife officer and pioneered in establishing the first National Park in Nepal. He resigned from his government job, entered the tourism business in 1970, and now owns a chain of eco-friendly hotels in major touristic cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, chitwan and Lumbini.
Siddhartha Highway is a major highway in Nepal that connects the Terai region in southern Nepal with the mountain region in northern Nepal. The highway starts at Nepal–India border near Siddharthanagar and terminates at Pokhara. This highway intersects with the east–west Mahendra Highway at Butwal.
Gandaki Province is one of the seven federal provinces established by the current constitution of Nepal which was promulgated on 20 September 2015. Pokhara is the province's capital city. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, Bagmati Province to the east, Karnali Province to the west, and Lumbini Province and Uttar Pradesh of India to the south. The total area of the province is 21,504 km² - about 14.57% of the country's total area. According to the latest census, the population of the province was 2,403,757. The newly elected Provincial Assembly adopted Gandaki Province as the permanent name by replacing its initial name Province no. 4 in July 2018.
The Hotel association of Nepal (HAN) was established in 1966/67 for the welfare of hotel industry of Nepal. Tourism being a major source of income, HAN has been able to impact the policy of tourism industry of Nepal. The headquarter of the association is located in Gairidhara, Kathmandu.
