History

The proposal for establishing this university was first given by the Uttar Pradesh government under Yogi Adityanath ministry in 2019. In 2019, a state ordinance was also passed for paving the way for the formation of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University. [4] [5] The university’s foundation stone was laid by prime minister Narendra Modi on 14 September 2021, in the presence of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. [6] The university foundation was for acknowledging Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh’s contributions to India’s independence and education. [7]

The permanent campus of the university is being developed over 92 acres of land located in the villages of Lodha and Musepur Kareem Jarouli, in Kol tehsil of Aligarh district. [8] Since its inception, the university has begun affiliating colleges and conducting examinations for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. [9]

Etymology

The university is named after Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh (1886–1979), a noted independence activist, journalist, writer, and educationist. [10] A member of the royal family of Mursan in Hathras district, he played an active role in India’s freedom struggle and established the provisional government of India in Kabul in 1915 during World War I. He was also known for his efforts in promoting modern education and social reform. [11]

In 1929, he leased a portion (almost 3 acre) of his land to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, which later became Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). [12] [13]

Administration

The university operates under the jurisdiction of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh serves as the chancellor, while the vice-chancellor acts as the chief executive officer. The incumbent vice-chancellor is professor N. B. Singh. [14]
