Rajlakshmi O Srikanta is a 1958 Bengali drama film directed by Haridas Bhattacharya and produced by Kanan Devi [1] based on the iconic and famous novel Srikanta of the legendary Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. [2] This film was released in 1958 [3] [4] under the banner of Srimati Pictures. The film stars Uttam Kumar Suchitra Sen, Anil Chatterjee, and Tulsi Chakraborty. Music direction of the film was done by Jnan Prakash Ghosh.

Plot

Srikanta goes to his friend Mahendra Rao's celebration where he meets Piyari Bai. Although he doesn't recognize her, Piyari knows him well as Srikanta was her childhood love. Piyari Bai reveals the past regarding how she was compelled by the wicked society, coupled with poverty and misfortune, due to which she had to take up this unholy profession. [5]

Bipasa was described as a victim of that riot in the film. However, the film deviates from the original novel and avoids describing Bipasha as a gang rape victim by Pakistani Islamist rioters.

The music was composed by Amal Mukherjee. This is a comedy drama film. The film stars Uttam Kumar in lead and others, while Ajit Bandyopadhyay, Gangapada Basu, Bidhayak Bhattacharya, Swagata Chakraborty, Tulsi Chakraborty, Nripati Chatterjee, Sabitri Chatterjee, Aparna Debi, Tarun Kumar, Priti Majumdar and Bireswar Sen played supporting role. Uttam Kumar played the role of a thief role which was very unique.

This film was released on 18 January 1955. The film stars Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen in lead roles and Chhabi Biswas, Tulsi Chakraborty, Bhanu Bannerjee, Chhaya Devi, Molina Devi, Shishir Batabyal, Gurudas Bannerjee, Kanu Bannerjee, Dhiraj Bhattacharya and Sumana Bhattacharya in the supporting roles. The film was produced by Sreelekha Pictures. The film become semi hit at the box office and for 50 days in theaters.
