Ramkrishna Nagar, most commonly known as R.K Nagar, is a small municipality township situated around 47km from Karimganj, India. The topography of the area comprises undulating hillocks. It is well connected by bus service from Karimganj and shared taxis run by private operators.[ citation needed ]

This town is under jurisdiction of Karimganj. The only institution for higher education is Ramkrishna Nagar College which opened in 1964. Now it offers courses in science and humanities. There is a small town under this called Kadamtala about 2 km from Ramkrishna Nagar. Access to this place is from Hailakandi, Silchar, and other places by bus route is available. It is possible to get a train from Anipur Railway Station, approximately 5 km away from the main town.[ citation needed ]

Demographics

Bengali and Meitei (Manipuri) are the official languages of this place. [1] [2]

The majority of the population of Ramkrishna Nagar are Bengali-speaking Hindus.[ citation needed ][ verification needed ]

Geography

The place is mostly covered by small altitude hills. There are also some green tea gardens near the town.[ citation needed ] A hanging bridge connected Ramkrishna Nagar to the Ratabari area; the bridge collapsed in October 2021. [3] Due to the proximity to Mizoram, on the border with Myanmar, the township has seen a number of arrests of drug-traffickers. [4] [5]

Education

Ramakrishna Nagar has a number of government, as well as private schools, at both primary as well as secondary level. Schools in the area include Ramkrishna Vidyapith H.S School, Kadamtala High School, Girls High School, G.C Paul Memorial Academy, Dreamland High School, Ideal home English Medium High School, Saraswasti Vidyamandir High school, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, etc. Recently Ramkrishna Nagar junior College was opened which is privately funded institute and the stream of commerce was introduced in 10+2 level in Ramkrishna Nagar for the first time. For degree courses there is one college which is Ramkrishna Nagar college which provides degree courses in science and humanities which is affiliated to Assam university which provides pass and honours courses in various stream. There is also one private college named G.C Paul College of Education situated 3-4 km away from main town which provides B.Ed.,D.el.ed degree courses in Arts. This institution along with G.C Paul Memorial Academy (school) was founded by former Ramkrishna Nagar College Principal, Mr. K.R Ranjan Paul.[ citation needed ]

Local events and festivals

Viking Fair and Book fairs are held regularly at R.K Nagar. Every year Durga Puja is celebrated with large gatherings of people. On the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day, a parade is performed by the 4th Assam NCC Unit cadets of Ramkrishna Nagar College along with the police officers and selected students of the local schools in front of the Circle Officer and Officer-in-charge of Police.[ citation needed ]

Sport

Inter-state Football championships are famous in Ramkrishna Nagar.[ citation needed ] Teams from Tripura, Bangladesh, Shillong also participate in the events. Inter-school football matches and local matches are also played on regular basis. Red ball cricket is also popular in Ramkrishna Nagar.[ citation needed ] Nowadays, Women football matches are also played.[ citation needed ] All these matches are played in Netaji Baag, Ramkrishna Nagar.

Amenities

It has a basic primary health care center with ambulances. The area also has its own police station which was established in 1994 and a fire brigade station.

The Barak River flows 900 kilometres (560 mi) through the states of Manipur, Mizoram and Assam in India. It flows into Bangladesh where it bifurcates into the Surma river and the Kushiyara river which converge again to become the Meghna river before forming the Ganges Delta. Of its total length, 524 km (326 mi) is in India, 31 km (19 mi) in Bangladesh. Badarpur is a town and a town area committee in Karimganj district in the state of Assam, India. Badarpur. Together with adjacent Badarpur Railway Town, it forms the Badarpur Urban Area, one of two notified urban areas in the district. The area is also popularly known as "Gateway to the Barak Valley" of Assam. Badarpur was a part of Karimganj district till 31 December 2022.

The Barak Valley is the southernmost region and administrative division of the Indian state of Assam. It is named after the Barak river. The Barak valley consists of three administrative districts of Assam namely - Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The main and largest city is Silchar, which seats the headquarter of Cachar district and also serves as administrative divisional office of Barak valley division. The valley is bordered by Mizoram and Tripura to the south, Bangladesh and Meghalaya to the west and Manipur to the east respectively. Once North Cachar Hills was a part of Cachar district which became a subdivision in 1951 and eventually a separate district. Assam University is a collegiate central public university located at Silchar, Assam, India. It was founded in the year 1994 by the provisions of an act enacted by the Parliament of India. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha is the Chancellor, the Governor of Assam is the Chief Rector and the President of India is acting as the Visitor of the university. The university has sixteen schools which offer Humanities, Languages, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Technology and Management Studies. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Bengali Language Movement (Barak Valley)</span> Protest against Assamese as the sole official language

The Bengali Language Movement of Barak Valley was a protest against the decision of the Government of Assam to make Assamese the only sole official language of the state, even though most Barak Valley residents speak Bengali. About 80% of the Valley's residents are ethnic Bengalis. In the Barak Valley region, the ethnic Bengali population consists of both Hindus and Muslims, who are almost equal in population and constitute the overwhelming majority of the population. There is also a substantial minority of native tribals and immigrants from other parts of India. The main incident took place on 19 May 1961 at Silchar railway station in which 11 ethnic Bengalis were killed by the Assam police.

Bhangabazar is a village in the Karimganj district of the Indian State of Assam. It comes under the Badarpur block, and is administered by Masli gram panchayat. It has the busiest market in the Karimganj district.

Katakhal is a town and railway station in Hailakandi tehsil of Hailakandi district in the Indian state of Assam. The village is named after the Katakhal River which originates in Bhairabi after three other rivers merge. The river ends at Kalinagar Village falling into Barak river. The Hailakandi district is one of the three districts of Southern Assam in the Barak Valley.

Udharbond is a Tehsil or Block in Cachar district in the state of Assam, India. It is located 17 km from District headquarters Silchar.

Sonai is a town in the Cachar district in the Indian state of Assam. It is also the name of a circle and block in the town. Government of Assam declared it as a municipal area on 2016 with 11 wards. On 2 March 2011, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone of the Barak Valley Engineering College in Karimganj district, which was proposed by the Assam Government officially.
