The Raritan Yacht Club (RYC), located in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, is the second oldest yacht club in New Jersey, and is thought to be one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States. [1] [2] [3]
Founded in 1882, The Raritan Yacht Club came into existence via a merger of two smaller local boat clubs: the Carteret Boat Club (founded in 1865 and included mostly canoes and rowing) and the Perth Amboy Yacht Club (founded in 1874 and included mostly sailboats). Both clubs utilized waterfront buildings within close proximity to each other. [4] The original Carteret Boat Club was housed in a one-room building containing a pot-belly stove, some canoes hanging from slings, and a porch where members would sit in rocking chairs watching the boats on the water. [5] The original Perth Amboy Yacht Club consisted mostly of prominent citizens with sailboats—though their numbers were relatively few—with a clubhouse located not far from the Carteret Boat Club. As they both eventually faced near-bankruptcy, the two clubs merged in May 1882 and assumed the name "Raritan Yacht Club," along with adopting the earlier founding date (1865) of the Carteret Boat Club for their official "founding" date as it also shares this date with the construction of the current RYC building. [6] [7] In December 1915, the Raritan Yacht Club was completely destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1916 at its current location.
Through its history, the club held regattas in the Raritan Bay, [1] and members participated in larger races like the Newport to Bermuda race.
As of 2022, Raritan Yacht Club is a members-only facility with dock slips, moorings, a galley restaurant. The club hosts regattas for members and offers sailing lesson programs [8] for children, teens, and adults during the sailing season, which is generally from mid-Spring to mid-Fall.
RYC adopted the St. George's Cross, which is a red cross on a white background dating back to the Middle Ages for its official burgee (flag). [9]
The original club building — and all its contents — was destroyed by a fire on December 22, 1915. In 1916, the club purchased the property of its current address (160 Water Street) which was originally the home of Perth Amboy resident Thomas E. Cooper. [10] The Cooper home is waterfront brick Italianate styled mansion built in 1865. The current building has endured additions over the years. The lot measure 6,957 square feet sitting upon .98 of an acre respectively with a combined assessed value (as of 2020) of US$1,279,000. [11]
The club endured significant damage from hurricanes over the years, including Hurricane Sandy. [12] [13]
Middlesex County is located in the north-central part of New Jersey, United States, extending inland from the Raritan Valley region to the northern portion of the Jersey Shore. As of the 2020 United States census, the county was the state's third-most populous county with a population of 863,162, its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 53,304 (+6.6%) from the 2010 census count of 809,858, which in turn reflected an increase of 59,696 (8.0%) from the 750,162 counted in the 2000 census. Middlesex is part of the New York metropolitan area. Many communities within the county serve as commuter towns to and from New York City and other points north. The county is part of the Central Jersey region of the state.
Perth Amboy is a city in northeastern Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, within the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 55,436, its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 4,622 (+9.1%) from the 50,814 recorded at the 2010 census, which in turn had reflected an increase of 3,511 (+7.4%) from the 47,303 counted at the 2000 census. Perth Amboy has a Hispanic majority population. In the 2010 census, the Hispanic population made up 78.1% of the population, the second-highest in the state, behind Union City at 84.7%. Perth Amboy is known as the "City by the Bay", referring to its location adjoining Raritan Bay. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the city's population was 55,357 in 2021, ranking the city as the 725th-most-populous in the country.
South Amboy is a suburban city in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, located on Raritan Bay. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 9,411, an increase of 780 (+9.0%) from the 2010 census count of 8,631, which in turn reflected an increase of 718 (+9.1%) from the 7,913 counted in the 2000 census.

The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) is a private social club and yacht club based in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1844 by nine prominent sportsmen. The members have contributed to the sport of yachting and yacht design. As of 2001, the organization was reported to have about 3,000 members. Membership in the club is by invitation only. Its officers include a commodore, vice-commodore, rear-commodore, secretary and treasurer.
Perth Amboy High School is a four-year comprehensive community public high school which serves students in ninth through twelfth grades from Perth Amboy in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, operating as the lone secondary school of the Perth Amboy Public Schools. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1928.
New Jersey's 6th congressional district is represented by Democrat Frank Pallone, who has served the district in Congress since 1993. The district includes the northern and eastern portions of Middlesex County and the coastal areas of Monmouth County, including towns along the Raritan Bay.
The Royal Perth Yacht Club (RPYC) is a yacht club in Perth, Western Australia. It is the third oldest yacht club in Australia after the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. It is based at the Crawley Marina on Pelican Point and at the Fremantle Annexe in Challenger Harbour.
The Raritan Bayshore is a region in central sections in the state of New Jersey. It is the area around Raritan Bay from The Amboys to Sandy Hook, in Middlesex and Monmouth counties, including the towns of Perth Amboy, South Amboy, Sayreville, Old Bridge, Matawan, Aberdeen, Keyport, Union Beach, Hazlet, Keansburg, Middletown, Atlantic Highlands, and Highlands. It is the northernmost part of the Jersey Shore, located just south of New York City. At Keansburg is a traditional amusement park while at Sandy Hook are found ocean beaches. The Sadowski Parkway beach area in Perth Amboy, which lies at the mouth of the Raritan River, was deemed the "Riviera of New Jersey" by local government. In recent years many of the beaches on the Bayshore area have been rediscovered and upgraded.

Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC) consists of two general acute care hospitals, located within the heart of the Raritan Valley region, servicing the Raritan Bayshore communities in Middlesex and Monmouth counties. The hospitals are located in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy ; both are non-profit, academic medical centers servicing the Central Jersey area. RBMC is a part of the Hackensack Meridian Healthcare network.
Ambrose A. Martin, was a 19th-century Boston, Massachusetts yacht and boat shipbuilder. He built the Ambrose A. Martin shipyard in 1882 at Jeffries Point, East Boston, where he built many notable Boston yachts and schooners. Martin died in Boston in 1934.
