Ratubhai Mulshankar Adani (13 April, 1914-1977) is an Indian politician and social activist from Gujarat. He served as a member of legislative assemblies of Saurashtra, Bombay and Gujarat as well as minister in state cabinets of them.

Early life

Adani was born on 13 April 1914 in Jasdan [1] or Bhanvad (now in Devbhoomi Dwarka district, Gujarat, India). Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he participated in Indian independence movement. [2] In 1930, he was imprisoned for two years for participating in the Dholera movement. In 1936, he was involved in social and economic activities in Taravada village near Amreli. He founded the Kathiawad Kranti Dal (Kathiawar Revolution Force) during the 1942 Quit India movement. [1] Following the independence of India, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the People's Army of the Arzi Hakumat (provisional government) which was instrumental during the annexation of Junagadh in 1947. Political career

Adani was elected as a member of constitution assembly of Saurashtra in 1948. [2] Later he was elected as a member of legislative assembly of Saurashtra State in 1952 from Keshod constituency and served as a minister in state cabinet. [4] [2] Following merger of Saurashtra with Bombay State, he was a minister of Panchayat, prohibition and cottage industry department. Following establishment of Gujarat in 1960, he served as a minister of public works and labour department. Following 1962 election, he was a minister of road and public works department under Jivraj Mehta government from 1962-63. During his tenure, Panchayati Raj was established in Gujarat. [2] He later served as a minister of agriculture, forest, cooperatives and Panchayat department under Balwantrai Mehta government from 1963-65. [2] [5]

He was also president of Gujarat state unit of Indian National Congress from 1970 to 1972. He again served as the minister from 1972 to 1974. [1] In 1977, he was responsible for Congress (I) in Gujarat. [1] He voluntarily retired from politics and served in social organisations. [1]

He wrote Dithu Me Gamadu Aa and Satyagrahna Samaranganma Volume I-II. [1]

He died on 5 September 1997 in Rajkot. [2] [1]

Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer from Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to author and politician. He is a well-known name in Gujarati literature. He founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an educational trust, in 1938.

Samaldas Gandhi (1897-1953) was a journalist and Indian independence activist who headed the Aarzi Hakumat or Provisional Government of the erstwhile princely state of Junagadh. He was a nephew of Mahatma Gandhi.

The history of Gujarat began with Stone Age settlements followed by Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlements like Indus Valley civilisation. Gujarat's coastal cities, chiefly Bharuch, served as ports and trading centers in the Nanda, Maurya, Satavahana and Gupta empires as well as during the Western Kshatrapas period. After the fall of the Gupta empire in the 6th century, Gujarat flourished as an independent Hindu-Buddhist state. The Maitraka dynasty, descended from a Gupta general, ruled from the 6th to the 8th centuries from their capital at Vallabhi, although they were ruled briefly by Harsha during the 7th century. The Arab rulers of Sindh sacked Vallabhi in 770, bringing the Maitraka dynasty to an end. The Gurjara-Pratihara Empire ruled Gujarat after from the 8th to 10th centuries. While the region also came under the control of the Rashtrakuta Empire. In 775 the first Parsi (Zoroastrian) refugees arrived in Gujarat from Greater Iran.

Babubhai Jashbhai Patel was the chief minister of Gujarat state in India. He held the office twice, first time from June 1975 to March 1976 as the leader of Janata Morcha and the second time from April 1977 to February 1980 as leader of Janata Party.

The Indian state of Gujarat was created out of the 17 northern districts of former State of Bombay. The Mahagujarat movement was instrumental in the formation of a separate state, Gujarat. Politics in Gujarat has mostly been dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party with the Indian National Congress being the main opposition since the 1990s. The state has been governed by the BJP since 1998, and is considered a stronghold of the party. In 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election the Aam Aadmi Party emerge as third party.

Dilip Ramanbhai Parikh was an Indian politician and industrialist. He was the 13th Chief Minister of Gujarat from 28 October 1997 to 4 March 1998.

Chhabildas Mehta was an Indian politician and the former Chief Minister of Gujarat who served from 1994 to 1995.

Babubhai Pranjivan Vaidya was an Indian independence activist, politician, social reformer, journalist and writer.

The Media in Gujarati language started with publication of Bombay Samachar in 1822. Initially the newspapers published business news and they were owned by Parsi people based in Bombay. Later Gujarati newspapers started published from other parts of Gujarat. Several periodicals devoted to social reforms were published in the second half of the 19th century. After arrival of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence movement peaked and it resulted in proliferation of Gujarati media. Following independence, the media was chiefly focused on political news. After bifurcation of Bombay state, the area of service changed. Later there was an increase in readership due to growth of literacy and the media houses expanded its readership by publishing more editions. Later these media houses ventured into digital media also. The radio and television media expanded after 1990.

Indumati Chimanlal Sheth was an Indian independence activist, politician, social worker and educationist from Gujarat. Born in Ahmedabad and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, she participated in the independence movement and later served as a deputy education minister of the Bombay State and education minister of Gujarat. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1970 for her social work.

Dinkar Krishnalal Mehta was an Indian politician and trade unionist. Mehta headed the communist movement in Gujarat for decades – leading the Gujarat state unit of the Communist Party of India between 1936 and 1964, and then the Communist Party of India (Marxist) between 1964 and 1989. He served as a legislator of Bombay State and Mayor of Ahmedabad. Mehta was a prominent leader of the Mahagujarat movement, which struggled for the creation of a Gujarati linguistic state.

Pushpa Janardanrai Mehta, also known as Pushpaben Mehta, was an Indian social worker and politician from Gujarat. She founded and headed several women and child welfare organisations in Ahmedabad and Saurashtra region. She served as the member of legislative assemblies of Saurashtra, Bombay and Gujarat states consecutively from 1952 to 1962. She served as the member of Rajya Sabha from 1966 to 1972. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
