Dholera is a town in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat state in India. [1]
Dholera was also an ancient port-city in Gulf of Khambhat, 30 km. from Dhandhuka village of Ahmedabad district. Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Dholera is one of the nine temples built by Swaminarayan.
Since 2011, the Government of Gujarat has been making plans to develop a smart city at Bhal area. [2] [1] The economic viability of the project has been questioned by farmer organisations. [2] [3] Several investors who initially signed the Memorandum of Understanding to develop the project, have withdrawn and refused to invest. [3]
The region is located in a low lying area and is flood prone. [2] [3] In August 2019, the area was waterlogged and remained cut off from other cities for three days. [2]
Gujarat Government has proposed a new International Airport for Ahmedabad city at Fedara. The proposed international airport is to be strategically located near the planned SEZ project of the Adani Group at Dholera. A new seaport was initially proposed, but the plans have been abandoned. [3]
In January 2021 a monorail project to link Ahmedabad and the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) was approved. The ₹60 billion (US$750 million) Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) will run parallel to the expressway and have seventy stations. [4] [5]

Since 2012, under Phase 1, the waterfront is gradually opened to public as and when facilities are constructed and various facilities are actively under construction. Rajkot International Airport is an international airport and a greenfield airport at Hirasar, Gujarat, India, serving the city of Rajkot and the Saurashtra region. It is located near the National Highway 8B (NH-8B) connecting Ahmedabad and Rajkot. It has a single runway for the operation of ‘C’ category aircraft. The airport was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at a cost of ₹2,654 crore (US$330 million). The foundation stone for the construction of the airport was laid on 7 October 2017, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27 July 2023, which was previously expected to be done on 31 December 2023.
Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is a 109 km (68 mi) long, four-lane wide access-controlled under-construction expressway in Gujarat, India. It will connect Sardar Patel Ring Road near Sarkhej in Ahmedabad with Adhelai village in Bhavnagar district via Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). The proposed Dholera International Airport near Navagam, about 20 km (12 mi) from Dholera SIR will also lie in the route.

Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) is a greenfield industrial planned city near Dholera in Gujarat's Ahmedabad district, around 100 kilometers to the south-west. spread over more than 920 km2 it is a new industrial city being jointly developed by the Government of India and Gujarat. Dholera is strategically located, well connected with trade gateways and falls in the influence zone of proposed Delhi – Mumbai Industrial Corridor project (DMIC), a joint initiative by the Government of India and Japan.
