Raul Armando Campillo is an American attorney [1] and politician who has served as a member of the San Diego City Council since 2020,representing District 7. [2] He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Campillo was born in San Diego and raised in El Cajon. He attended University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral Catholic High School) [3] before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Harvard University. After graduation,he taught fifth grade in North Las Vegas,Nevada,while completing a Master's degree in Education from the University of Nevada,Las Vegas. He later earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. [4]
After law school,Campillo joined the international law firm O'Melveny &Myers, [5] where he practiced complex litigation and conducted white-collar criminal investigations [4] . He later returned to San Diego to serve as a Deputy City Attorney. In that role,he prosecuted DUI cases,sought diversion programs and therapy options for individuals struggling with addiction,and worked in the Gun Violence Response Unit to remove firearms from people deemed a threat to themselves or others. In the 2020 San Diego city council election,Campillo placed first in the nonpartisan blanket primary for District 7 [6] and was elected in the November general election. He assumed office on December 10,2020.
On the City Council,Campillo has focused on infrastructure,public safety,and creating local jobs. [4] He has also led on childcare affordability and accessibility initiatives,securing expanded access for City of San Diego employees [7] and advocating for expanded access to affordable childcare options for San Diegan families. [8]
In addition to serving on multiple Council committees,Campillo is chair of the Mission Trails Regional Park Task Force and serves on the San Diego River Conservancy Board. [9]
Campillo ran unopposed for re-election in the 2024 San Diego City Council election,winning the election outright in the March 5,2024 primary. [10]
