Re-Traced is an EP by the technical metal band Cynic. It is composed of four re-interpretations of songs from their album Traced in Air , as well as one new song. It was released through Season of Mist on May 17. [2]
During the 2010 tour in support of Between the Buried and Me along with Scale the Summit and the Devin Townsend Project, the band performed live "an experiment". Shortly after unveiling this new work, the band announced a new EP coming soon on their MySpace blog. Tymon Kruidenier revealed in an interview the plans for the coming EP:
As most of you already know we're working on an EP. We're reinterpreting 4 songs from Traced In Air: Space, King, Evolutionary and Integral, and we will record a brand new song. There's [sic] several reasons we're doing this. We're not done yet with TiA, the album has only been out for a little over a year and we feel the songs are still fresh. Besides that we want to try different production techniques and incorporate influences from different genres we all love, but which never had a place in Cynic. So I saw someone asked how 'surprising' this EP could be? I would say: very surprising. [3]
It was later revealed via a Youtube teaser [4] that the EP was entitled Re-Traced.
More details were announced about the upcoming EP release on their MySpace blog. Paul Masvidal also commented on the new artwork and layout:
The artwork on the EP takes Venosa's original song paintings from the 'Traced in Air' booklet and reinterprets them by extracting the basic outlines, almost appearing as though they are etched in wood. Travis Smith helped manifest these conceptions graphically. The idea was to have the 'tracing' of the original work in tact[ sic ], so it almost morphs into a simple line drawing of the sculptural shapes found in Venosa's work. The end result appears like unearthed, archival etchings from an alien planet. [5]
The EP was produced by the band with the help of Warren Riker on mixing and Maor Appelbaum on mastering.
On September 3, 2021, Cynic released a new version of "Integral" featuring the late Sean Malone on bass as a tribute, with half of the proceeds going to suicide prevention organizations To Write Love on Her Arms and The Trevor Project. [6]

Sean Reinert was an American musician, songwriter and drummer of Æon Spoke. He was also the drummer and founding member of Cynic, until leaving the band in September 2015. He credited drummers Dave Miranda, John Bonham, Dave Weckl, Gary Husband and Vinnie Colaiuta as being important influences during his formative years.

Sean Malone was an American musician who played primarily fretless bass guitar and Chapman Stick. However, Malone also played piano, keyboards, and guitar. Malone did a number of session jobs for various bands and musicians. He was most famous for his work in American band Cynic, in which he developed a strong partnership with the drummer Sean Reinert. Malone and Reinert played on several records together outside Cynic, making them one of the most favorable modern progressive rhythm sections.
Paul Albert Masvidal is an American guitarist, songwriter and producer. He is the guitarist, singer, and a founding member of the band Cynic. He has remained a continual member in Cynic for nearly three decades, and he has developed numerous other projects including Æon Spoke, Onward with Love, and Masvidal. Masvidal was ranked in Loudwire's 66 Best Hard Rock + Metal Guitarists of All Time and 50 Best Metal Songwriters of All Time.
Focus is the debut studio album by Cynic, released September 14, 1993 through Roadrunner Records. A remastered version of the album was released in 2004.
Gordian Knot was an American rock band directed by bass guitarist Sean Malone. At times its shifting lineup included Steve Hackett of Genesis, Bill Bruford of King Crimson and Yes, Ron Jarzombek from Watchtower and Spastic Ink, as well as Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, several of Malone's former bandmates from Cynic, and John Myung from Dream Theater. Sean Malone died on December 9, 2020.

Just Surrender is an American rock band from Dover Plains, New York, formerly known as A Second Chance. Just Surrender was formed by three high school friends from Dover High School in Dover Plains, New York, Jason "Jay" Maffucci, Andy Meunier, and Steve Miller. Vocalist/guitarist Dan Simons, formerly of The Record Collection, joined the original three members; the group was a four-piece until 2008. The band is known for the up-beat mood in their music, and for not having a lead vocalist, but rather having two vocalists who "share the spotlight." The group has since released three studio albums and one EP.

Chris Kringel is an American bass player. He is the author of several instructional books for the bass guitar. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin and lives in Milwaukee. In 1995, recorded Demos with the post-breakup Cynic band Portal. After a while, he was also involved in another Cynic-linked project, Æon Spoke, recording Demos2000. Playing live with Cynic when they reunited in 2007, as band's original bassist Sean Malone was unavailable for touring, Masvidal called Kringel and he performed on a number of world-wide shows from the 2007 Cynic Reunion Tour. He currently produces several Play A-Long series for Hal Leonard Publishing, does production and recording for several artists and performs in the Milwaukee area.
Cynic is an American progressive metal band formed in Miami, Florida in 1987 which incorporates elements of progressive rock, alternative rock, and extreme metal. Their first album, Focus, released on September 14, 1993, is widely regarded as a landmark release of the progressive metal genre. Cynic disbanded in 1994, but they reunited in 2006 and released their second album on November 17, 2008. Traced in Air was released through French label Season of Mist, followed up by an EP titled Re-Traced on May 18, 2010 and an EP titled Carbon-Based Anatomy on November 11, 2011. Their third studio album, Kindly Bent to Free Us, was released on February 14, 2014. In December 2017, after two years of an uncertain future, Reinert confirmed his split from Cynic, leaving Masvidal as the only remaining original member left. Reinert died at the age of 48 on January 24, 2020. Malone died at the age of 50 eleven months later.
Æon Spoke is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles. It was created by members of Cynic and former members of Death, Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert, when they relocated from Miami to Los Angeles.

R5 was an American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. The band consisted of Ross Lynch, Riker Lynch, Rocky Lynch, Rydel Lynch (keyboard/vocals), and Ellington Ratliff (drums/vocals). They released their first EP Ready Set Rock on March 9th, 2010, but it was removed once Ross got his role on the Disney Channel Show Austin and Ally. They then released the EP Loud on February 19th, 2013 Since releasing their debut album, Louder, on September 24, 2013, which peaked at 24 on the Billboard 200, followed by their world tour. Their second album, Sometime Last Night, was released on July 10, 2015, and debuted at 6 on the US Billboard 200, and reached the top 20 in five other countries. They have also released five EPs, eleven singles, and a documentary called R5: All Day, All Night that was first released in theaters April 15, 2015.
Their / They're / There is an indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. All three members are prominent figures in the Chicago indie scene, having each been a part of numerous noteworthy projects based in the area. The group released their first two EPs, Their / They're / There and Analog Weekend in 2013. Frontman Evan Weiss said of the band's sound "people have these expectations like it's gonna sound like something we've already done, but it doesn't [...] but I think, listening to the songs, you can tell that the three of us wrote them."
Kindly Bent to Free Us is the third studio album by the progressive metal band Cynic. It was released on February 14, 2014, and is the final Cynic album with Sean Reinert, who left the band in September 2015 and died on January 24, 2020, as well as the final Cynic album with Sean Malone, who died on December 9, 2020.
