Reginald L. "Reggie" Joule,Jr. (born July 14,1952) is a politician in the U.S. state of Alaska. Until recently,Joule served a three-year term as mayor of the Northwest Arctic Borough,having been elected to that position in 2012. He announced his intention to retire from public service at the end of his term. [1]
Joule had previously served as a Democratic member of the Alaska House of Representatives,representing the 40th District from 1997 to 2012. [2]
Before the beginning of the 26th Legislature in January 2008,Joule,along with "bush" Democrats Bryce Edgmon and Bob Herron,began caucusing with the Republicans in the House Majority Caucus. In the House,Joule served as a member of the Finance Committee. He also chaired both the Department of Health &Social Services and Environmental Conservation Finance Subcommittee and served on the University Of Alaska Finance Subcommittee. He was a member of the Special Committee on Economic Development,Trade &Tourism and the Joint Committee on Education Funding District Cost Factor for the 27th Legislature. [3]
While serving as the mayor of the Northwest Arctic Borough,Joule was appointed by President Obama to the US President's State,Local,Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. [4] In his capacity as mayor,he was happy to welcome the first official and historic visit of the US President to the Alaskan Arctic to see firsthand the impacts of climate change on villages and advocate for local preparations and involvement. He chose to step down after one term and was succeeded by Clement Richards Sr. [5] [6] At present,Joule also serves on the Advisory Board of the UK-based 'Polar Regions' think-tank Polar Research and Policy Initiative. Joule has a wife,Linda,and five children:Lovisa,Reggie III,Angela,Dawn and Puyuk. Joule graduated from Copper Valley High School (a defunct Jesuit-run boarding school in Glennallen) in 1970 and attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1970 to 1972. [8]
Before being elected to office,Joule was a building maintenance and construction contractor. [9] Joule is also well known as a top competitor in the World Eskimo Indian Olympics. He is a former nalukataq (blanket toss) champion,and appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss the game. [10] As a result of his accomplishments therein,he was inducted into the 2010 class of the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.
Joule made two appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson . He appeared on August 1,1973,and again on June 24,1983. Both appearances were to demonstrate the skills he used in the World Eskimo Indian Olympics.

Segundo Llorente Villa,S.J. was a Spanish Jesuit,philosopher and author who spent 40 years as a missionary among the Yup'ik in the most remote parts of Alaska. In 1960,he won a seat in the 2nd Alaska State Legislature as a write-in candidate,becoming the state’s first Catholic priest elected to office,as well as one of two write-in candidates elected that year from rural Alaska. He wrote hundreds of essays and one dozen autobiographical books in Spanish and English about his life in Alaska. Llorente is called the "favorite son" of his hometown,Mansilla Mayor.
Catherine Andrea Giessel is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Alaska,who has served as a member of the Alaska Senate since 2023 and from 2011 to 2021. From 2013 to 2021,Giessel represented District N in the Alaska Senate,including Northeast Anchorage,Anchorage Hillside and the Turnagain Arm communities of Bird,Girdwood,Indian,and Anchorage,all within the Municipality of Anchorage. First elected in 2010 while identifying with Tea Party values,she has also served as the vice-chair of the state Republican Party and had a career in nursing. Following redistricting,she was elected to a different senate seat in 2012. Giessel serves as chair of the Resources Committee and is a member of the Senate Majority Caucus. After Senate President Pete Kelly was unseated in 2018,Giessel was elected president of the Alaska Senate,a post she held until 2021. Giessel returned to the Alaska Senate in 2023,representing the newly configured District E after defeating incumbent Republican Roger Holland. She will serve as Senate majority leader in the 33rd Legislature,overseeing a coalition caucus of eight Republicans and nine Democrats.

Laura Mae Bergt was an Iñupiaq athlete,model,politician,and activist for the Iñupiat and other Indigenous Alaskans. Born in the Northwest Arctic Borough of Alaska to bi-racial parents,she grew up in Nome and Kotzebue before attending high school in Sitka. Involved in the Native Olympic movement,she was both a nine-times winner of the Arctic Circle blanket toss event and served as chair of the World Eskimo Indian Olympics in 1966. She worked as a promoter for the new state of Alaska attending trade shows and making marketing appearances as a spokeswoman and guest on radio and television programs. From the 1960s,she worked in various policy positions at the tribal,local,state,and national level to address issues like disability,education,employment opportunities,housing,and poverty,and promoting the rights of Indigenous people.
