Wotherspoon was a candidate for the party's leadership in 2013. In 2016, the NDP caucus elected Wotherspoon to serve as Leader of the Opposition following the defeat of Cam Broten in the 2016 provincial election and the party's provincial council elected him interim leader.

This is the first time in 90 years that a party other than the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) or its predecessor, the Saskatchewan Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) has won three consecutive majority governments in Saskatchewan. It is also the first time that a centre-right party has won three consecutive elections in the province.
