Rhea Sylvia is an extended play (EP) by the American metal band Thou. It was released on July 27, 2018 through the independent hardcore punk label Deathwish Inc. Except for the cover of "The Lasting Dose", (from sludge metal band Crowbar's 2001 album Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form ) the songs on Rhea Sylvia are Thou versions of band member Matthew Thudium's solo material. The EP's musical style is a mix of the band's signature sludge metal sound and grunge artists such as Alice in Chains. [1]

Background and recording

Rhea Sylvia one release in a four-part recording project. Leading up to the release of Thou's 2018 fifth studio album, Magus—their first full-length studio album since 2014's Heathen —the band decided to release three EPs, each with its own sonic theme and released through a different label. In May 2018, Thou released the drone music EP, The House Primordial, through the label Raw Sugar; followed the acoustic EP, Inconsolable, released through Community Records in June 2018; followed by the grunge music EP Rhea Sylvia in July 2018; and ultimately released the studio album Magus through Sacred Bones Records in August 2018, which is said to incorporate elements from all three EPs. [1] [2] [3] Throughout Thou's history, the band has been noted for releasing EPs, split albums and collaborative albums around the release of major solo studio albums. [2]

Work for all four related 2018 releases began in 2015 and were all released with minimal promotion. According to the band, the nature of the surprise release caused some fans to believe all releases were written and recorded fairly quickly. When in fact, Rhea Sylvia was recorded in secret about a year prior to its official release. [2]

Release and promotion

Rhea Sylvia was released on July 27, 2018. Digital and 12" vinyl copies were released through Deathwish Inc., and some digital copies were sold with alternate cover art. A CD-format compilation album title Ceremonies of Consolidation released through Gilead Media will include all three pre-Magus EPs (The House Primordial, Inconsolable and Rhea Sylvia).

Thou promoted the release of Rhea Sylvia with an online stream of "The Only Law" on May 31, 2018. Lars Gotrich of NPR said, when compared to the material of the other two related EPs, (The House Primordial and Inconsolable) the track "sounds like the most natural extension of Thou's sound, but more refined." [2] Revolver described the track as, "part industrial, part goth, part black metal, part sludge, all Thou." [4] Two days before the release of Rhea Sylvia, Thou released the EP's closing track, a cover of Crowbar's "The "Lasting Dose". [5] Revolver described the track as "particularly filthy [and] feedback-ridden" [6] while MetalSucks said it "pays due homage to their fellow Louisana[ sic ] doom brethren while still holding up as an incredible track in its own right." Rhea Sylvia was generally well received by music critics. Several critics lauded Thou's incorporation of grunge music into their sound, Bryan Funck's vocal range, and the band's sonic experimentation that diversifies their existing and expansive discography. [8] [9] In Paul Simon's review for Allmusic, he concluded: "Rhea Sylvia is one of Thou's more accessible offerings, but it's no less boundary-pushing, and it makes a welcome, fitting addition to the group's catalog." [8] In Kevin Stewart-Panko's review for Metal Injection, he said: "In lieu of a proper grunge revival—which will likely, or hopefully, never happens—Rhea Sylvia offers not only an expansion of the blueprint but also shows just how deep Thou’s capacity for diversity runs." [9]

The Melvins are an American rock band formed in 1983, in Montesano, Washington. Their early work was key to the development of both grunge and sludge metal. They have mostly performed as a trio, as well as a quartet with either two drummers/bassists in recent years. Crowbar (American band)

Crowbar is an American sludge metal band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1990. Through infusing a slow, low-keyed, brooding doom metal sound with the aggression of hardcore punk, they pioneered a style known as sludge metal – albeit frontman Kirk Windstein admitted a mild dislike to the term – alongside other bands of the New Orleans heavy metal scene such as Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Acid Bath, and Down.

Kirk Windstein

Kirk Windstein is an American guitarist and singer. He is a founding member of the sludge metal band Crowbar, and a founding member of the heavy metal supergroup Down, playing with them from 1991 to 2013 and later rejoining the band in 2020. In 2005, Windstein formed Kingdom of Sorrow with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed. Their debut album was released in 2008. Windstein began his musical career in 1985 as a guitarist for a cover band called Victorian Blitz, and in 1988 joined a hardcore punk band called Shell Shock as a vocalist and guitarist.

The Hope Conspiracy is an American hardcore punk band from Boston, Massachusetts, United States, formed in late 1999. They were picked up by Equal Vision Records and Bridge 9 Records before signing a deal with Deathwish Records.

Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form is the seventh studio album by Crowbar, a New Orleans-based sludge metal band. It was released in 2001. It is the last album to feature guitarist Sammy Duet, and the first and only album to feature bassist Jeff Okoneski and ex-Machine Head drummer Tony Costanza.

Doomriders is an American heavy metal band from Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The band has released three albums on Deathwish, Inc. The band's vocalist/guitarist Nate Newton also plays bass in Converge and guitar in Old Man Gloom. Jebb Riley formerly played bass in There Were Wires. Doomriders have toured with Coliseum and Saviours. The band began work on their third studio album in 2011 with an expected release date in 2013 through Deathwish. Deafheaven American metal band formed in 2010

Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah, in April 2011. A follow-up album, Sunbather, was released in 2013 to wide critical acclaim, becoming one of the best reviewed albums of the year in the United States. In 2015 the band released their third album, New Bermuda, and in 2018 their fourth, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love.

Code Orange is an American hardcore punk band that formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2008. Harms Way (band)

Harm's Way is an American straight edge hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2006. The band started as a side project, but ended up becoming a more serious and full-time band in their later years. Harm's Way has since released four studio albums: Reality Approaches (2009), Isolation (2011) and Rust (2015) and several EP's. On February 9, 2018, the band released their critically acclaimed Metal Blade Records debut, titled Posthuman. They have been recognized for their unique blend of metal, industrial, and hardcore music.

<i>Rheia</i> (album) 2016 studio album by Oathbreaker

Rheia is the third studio album by Belgian band Oathbreaker. The album was produced by Jack Shirley and released through independent record label Deathwish Inc. on September 30, 2016. Oathbreaker toured internationally in support of Rheia from September until December with Skeletonwitch and Iron Reagan. The title references Rhea, mother to the six principal Olympians in Greek mythology.

Septic Tank (band)

Septic Tank are a British punk rock band formed out of Coventry doom metal band Cathedral. The band was originally formed in 1994, while Cathedral were on tour, and later reformed in 2013 after Cathedral's breakup. Once the band reunited, producer and former member of the UK band Trouble, Jaime "Gomez" Arellano, replaced drummer Barry Stern, due to his death in 2005. The band have currently released one self-titled EP and one full-length album, entitled "Rotting Civilisation".

Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, with their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, being their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are considered a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.
