Richard File (born 19 November 1975) is a British composer, music producer, and vocalist best known for his work with James Lavelle as part of Unkle. [1] He has also released singles under the alias Forme.

Career

File joined Unkle in 1999, having remixed "Unreal" (from the debut album Psyence Fiction ) with added vocals from Ian Brown. For the subsequent Unkle albums Never, Never, Land (2004) and War Stories (2007), File is credited with piano, organ, synthesizer, guitar, and vocals, as well as co-production. [2] [3] [4]

Working under the Unkle name, File remixed tracks by DJ Shadow, Queens of the Stone Age, Depeche Mode, The Duke Spirit, Garbage, and Placebo. File and Lavelle also released a number of DJ mixes under the name Unklesounds, including Edit Music for a Film: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Reconstruction (2005). [5] [6]

In January 2008, File announced he was leaving Unkle [7] after a decade of collaboration to pursue work with his new band We Fell to Earth alongside Wendy Rae Fowler. [8] [9]

We Fell to Earth released their debut eponymously titled album in 2009 [10] [11] [12] [13] and saw tracks feature in US dramas: "The Double" in Gossip Girl , CSI: NY and The Prisoner ; "Lights Out" In Numb3rs ; and "Careful What You Wish For" in CSI: NY . In winter 2010 We Fell to Earth composed and performed the theme song to AMC's The Killing .

In 2011, File produced [14] The Invisible's second album Rispah (Ninja Tune, 2012). [15] He also performed additional production and played omnichord on The Duke Spirit's album Bruiser (2011). [16]

Psyence Fiction is the debut studio album by English electronic music act Unkle, released on 24 August 1998 by Mo' Wax. The album was produced by Unkle, at the time consisting of James Lavelle and DJ Shadow. The music on Psyence Fiction was primarily composed by DJ Shadow. Lavelle recruited numerous guest musicians to contribute to the album's recording.

"Rabbit in Your Headlights" is a song by British electronic duo Unkle. It was released as the lead single from their debut album Psyence Fiction (1998). The song features vocals from Radiohead singer Thom Yorke.

He is the subject of 2016 documentary film The Man from Mo'Wax.

End Titles... Stories for Film is a compilation album by British electronic music act Unkle, inspired by feature films created since Unkle's previous 2007 album War Stories, released on 7 July 2008. Unlike their previous album, the 2005 mix Edit Music for a Film: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Reconstruction, "End Titles..." is composed of original material. It features collaborators: Josh Homme, Black Mountain, Gavin Clark, Joel Cadbury, James Petralli, War Stories producer Chris Goss, Dave Bateman, and James Griffith of Lake Trout/Unkle's touring band.

The Invisible are an English band, fronted by the singer and guitarist Dave Okumu. The band formed as Okumu's solo project but quickly developed into a full-fledged band with friends Tom Herbert and Leo Taylor (drums). Their self-titled debut album, released on 9 March 2009, was nominated for the Mercury Prize and selected as critics choice for iTunes album of the year.

<i>Heavy Drug</i> (Surrender Sounds Mix) 2009 EP by Unkle

Heavy Drug (Surrender Sounds Mix) is an EP released by British electronic music group Unkle. According to James Lavelle, the track came about during a late night session, when he and his brother, Adian Lavelle, were working on serveal remix projects, which resulted in what they called a "happy accident". The track was reworked during the sessions for Where Did the Night Fall set for release in May 2010. A remix was made during the recording, entitled the Surrender Sounds Mix, which was featured on James Lavelle's Global Underground 037: Bangkok, and was officially released on 16 August. It was delayed in USA, due to distribution errors, and was finally released on 28 August 2009.
