Rich Peppiatt is an English [1] writer and director. [2] [3] He is best known for films Kneecap and One Rogue Reporter . [4] [5]
After graduating from the University of Warwick, Peppiatt worked as a journalist across a number of national newspapers. [6] He first came to prominence in 2011 when his resignation letter to Daily Star proprietor Richard Desmond, accusing the paper of Islamophobia and unethical journalism, went viral when it was leaked to the Guardian newspaper. [7] [8] [9] He became a prominent critic of tabloid behaviour, giving evidence at the Leveson Inquiry into Press Ethics. [10] [11]
Peppiatt turned his experiences as a journalist and fallout from his resignation into a stand-up comedy show titled One Rogue Reporter which premiered at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, described as "hilariously turning the tables on the tabloid power players, testing the public’s right to know to its eye-opening extremity." [12] [13] After Edinburgh the show toured across the UK, finishing with a run at London’s Soho Theatre. [14] [15]
The stage show was transformed into a documentary One Rogue Reporter, starring the likes of Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan and John Bishop. It premiered at Sheffield DocFest in 2014 and was nominated for Best Independent Feature at the National Film Awards UK. [16]
In 2018 Peppiatt released two short films through his production company Naughty Step titled Backseat Driver and Grounded. [17] [18] Grounded was long-listed for the 2020 Academy Awards. [2]
Peppiatt was the writer and occasional director of five seasons Channel 4’s satirical consumer affairs show Supershoppers.[ citation needed ] He was writer of season five of Channel 4’s Tricks of the Restaurant Trade. [19]
In 2024 Peppiatt wrote and directed his first narrative feature film Kneecap , about the rise of the Belfast-based hip-hop group Kneecap. [20] The film stars the band members as themselves, as well as Michael Fassbender. The idea for a film was first conceived in 2019 when Peppiatt watched the group perform in Belfast. [21] He went on to shoot the music video for their track “Guilty Conscience”. [22] The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, winning the NEXT Audience Award. [23] It was released worldwide in August 2024 claiming the biggest Irish weekend opening ever for Irish language film. [24]
At the 2024 Galway Film Fleadh Kneecap won three main prizes: Best Irish Film, Best Irish Language Film and Audience Award. It is the first film in the 36-year history of the festival to do so. [25]
Kneecap has been selected as Ireland’s entry for the 2025 Academy Awards. [26]

The Irish language is, since 2022, an official language in Northern Ireland. The main dialect spoken there is Ulster Irish. Protection for the Irish language in Northern Ireland stems largely from the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

The Gaeltacht Quarter in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is an area surrounding the Falls Road in the west of the city. A Gaeltacht is an area where the Irish language is spoken. Unlike the traditional Gaeltacht areas in the Republic of Ireland, Belfast's Gaeltacht Quarter does not have legally defined geographical boundaries. The Quarter serves as a socio-linguistic hub focused on the Falls Road/Andersonstown Road corridor in the west of the city, and aims to promote Irish language and Irish culture in the area and to develop associated tourist attractions.

Valene Kane is a Northern Irish actress. On television, she gained prominence through her role as Rose Stagg in the BBC Two series The Fall (2013–2016). She has since appeared in the BBC dramas Blue Lights (2023–24) and Thirteen (2016), the Stan series The Other Guy (2017–2019), the Sky Atlantic series Gangs of London (2020–2022) and the ITVX series The Winter King (2023). Kneecap are an Irish hip hop trio from West Belfast, Northern Ireland, composed of Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Caireallain and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, with the stage-names of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí respectively. They rap in a mixture of English and Irish, and their lyrics often contain Irish republican themes. Their first single "C.E.A.R.T.A." was released in 2017, followed by their debut album 3CAG, in 2018. Their second album Fine Art was released in 2024, and a biographical film about the group was released later the same year.
Summer of Soul is a 2021 American independent documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut. It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021, before expanding and being released for streaming on Hulu the next weekend.
