The 78th British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs, is an upcoming ceremony to be held on 16 February 2025, honouring the best national and foreign films of 2024, at the Royal Festival Hall within London's Southbank Centre. [1] [2] [3] Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, accolades will be handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened at British cinemas in 2024.

The ceremony will be hosted by David Tennant for the second year in a row. [4] [5] [6] The broadcast will stream live on BBC One and iPlayer in the United Kingdom, and BritBox in North America, the Nordics and Australia, as well as a host of further international broadcasters. [7] This year, a new Children's and Family Film award "will celebrate the very best films appealing to inter-generational audiences". This is the first new category to be introduced to the EE BAFTA Film Awards in five years, following the introduction of Best Casting in 2020. As previously set out in autumn 2023, the inclusion of a dedicated award for children and family films "will profile the essential creative contributions of the children's media sector". [3] [8] [9]

The BAFTA longlists were unveiled on 3 January 2025. [10] The nominations were announced by 2024 EE Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna-Bruce and BAFTA TV Award-winner Will Sharpe on 15 January 2025 from BAFTA's HQ at 195 Piccadilly, London, and streamed live on BAFTA's YouTube channel. The Rising Star nominees, which is the only category voted for by the British public, were unveiled on 7 January 2025; this year marks the 20th anniversary of the EE Rising Star Award. [11] The winners will be announced on 16 February 2025. [3] Spanish-language French musical crime film Emilia Pérez led the longlists with fifteen nods, followed by Conclave with fourteen while The Brutalist , A Complete Unknown , and The Substance received eleven nods each. [10] [12] [13] Emilia Pérez's fifteen mentions ties the record with the prior year's triplet of Barbie , Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer , and 2022's All Quiet on the Western Front , the latter two films having gone on to receive the BAFTA Award for Best Film. [14] Ultimately, Conclave garnered the most nominations with twelve, followed closely by Emilia Pérez with eleven and The Brutalist earning nine. [15] [16] [17]

Ceremony information

The broadcast will be streamed live on BBC One and iPlayer in the United Kingdom, while international audiences can tune in via BritBox International in North America and various broadcasters worldwide; Australian and Nordic viewers will have access through their regional BritBox platforms and on a number of other broadcasters internationally. [20] Ahead of the ceremony, audiences will be able to watch Clara Amfo and Alex Zane live from the red carpet on BAFTA's YouTube channel while Ash Holmes and Jack Remmington will be reporting exclusively on BAFTA's digital channels, allowing audiences access to all the arrivals; Jeremiah Asiamah will DJ the red carpet and be on the bill with Tina Edwards at the BAFTA After-Party. [21]

Nomination-wise, this is the most genre-diverse year ever for the BAFTA Film Awards as horror films Heretic , Nosferatu and The Substance , musical (or music-inspired) films such as A Complete Unknown , Emilia Pérez and Wicked , historical epics like Blitz and The Brutalist , and big-budget action fare like Dune: Part Two and Gladiator II all earned nominations. [22] [23] [24] Anora writer-director Sean Baker earned the second-most nominations for an individual at a single ceremony with five (Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Editing); he is one behind Alfonso Cuarón, who set the record of six for Roma in 2019. [22] English filmmaker Rich Peppiatt became the most nominated debut director ever with four nominations for the Irish comedy-drama film Kneecap , just ahead of Billy Elliot 's Stephen Daldry with three. [25]

Due to her absence last year, as she was recovering from abdominal surgery and has since completed chemotherapy, Princess Kate Middleton was reported to possibly attend the ceremony alongside her husband, Prince William. With the organisation's close ties to both William and Kate, insiders had ensured they are "pulling out all the stops to try to secure Kate's presence at this year's awards". Speaking to MailOnline, sources said: "Anything BAFTA can do to work around Kate Middleton, it will do." Besides William, who is the president of BAFTA, attending the previous year's ceremony alone amidst Kate's health battle, the couple have only attended once in the last few years; the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not appear in 2022 due to "diary constraints", while their attendance in 2021 was cancelled after the death of William's grandfather, Prince Philip. [26] [27] [28] However, six days before the ceremony on 10 February, it was confirmed by Kensington Palace that the Prince and Princess of Wales would not be attending. Instead, William is expected to appear in a video package as part of the ceremony. As for reasoning, Kate Mansey, royal editor for The Times , posted on X: "The Prince of Wales will not attend the BAFTA Awards ceremony on Sunday, but will instead focus his efforts on highlighting the next generation of film talent. This year, it falls on the first weekend of the half-term school holidays." The couple's three children (Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte) attend Lambrook in Berkshire, England, and in the UK, schools go on break between 17 February to 21 February. [29] [30] [31]

The British band Take That and American actor Jeff Goldblum are set to perform at the ceremony. [20] Take That, consisting of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, will take to the stage to perform their chart-topping hit single "Greatest Day", which is featured prominently in the multiple BAFTA-nominated film Anora; Goldblum, meanwhile, will deliver a piano performance during the "In Memoriam" segment.
