Black Box Diaries is a 2024 documentary film by Shiori Itō, documenting her sexual assault investigation and case in Japan. [3] The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. [3] [4] [5] It was released in the United States and United Kingdom on October 25, 2024, by MTV Documentary Films and Dogwoof, respectively. It received critical acclaim and was named one of the top 5 documentary films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. [6]
The film is a documentary based on investigative journalism analysing a high-profile rape case in Japan, written by the victim, Shiori Itō. The perpetrator was Noriyuki Yamaguchi, head of the Tokyo Broadcasting System. He's established to be a powerful man with friends in high places, notably prime minister Shinzo Abe. [7]
The film is based on the 2017 memoir written by Itō. [7]
It is directed by Itō and co-produced by her along with Hanna Aqvilin and Eric Nyari.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 20 as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Black Box Diaries screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia, August 2024 [17] and at the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival in October. [18]
The film competed in the category Documentary Competition at the 20th Zurich Film Festival in October 2024, where it won the Golden Eye for best Documentary and the Audience Award across all competing entries. [19]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , 98% of 56 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.3/10. [20] Metacritic , which uses a weighted average , assigned the film a score of 82 out of 100, based on 18 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". [21]

CPH:DOX, also known as Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, is a Danish film festival focused on documentary films, held annually in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 2008 has been run by Copenhagen Film Festivals, which also managed the now-defunct CPH PIX festival.
Final Cut for Real ApS is a film production company based in Copenhagen, Denmark specializing in documentaries for the international market. The two Oscar-nominated groundbreaking documentaries The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014) helped establish the company as a recognized provider of independent creative documentaries on the international stage. The recent years, Final Cut for Real has also expanded to fiction films and virtual reality. In 2019 Final Cut for Real Norway was established.
Diana El Jeiroudi, is a Berlin-based, Syrian independent film director and producer. El Jeiroudi’s films as director were celebrated at many festivals, including the Venice Film Festival, IDFA, DokLeipzig, Visions du Réel, CPH:DOX… among others. Her producing credits include the Sundance 2023 film 5 Seasons of Revolution, the Cannes Film Festival 2014 selection Silvered Water, the IDFA 2013 selection The Mulberry House, among others. She was the first Syrian to be a juror in Cannes Film Festival in 2014, when she was part of the first Documentary Film Award jury in the festival. Together with her partner Orwa Nyrabia, El Jeiroudi was also the first Syrian known to be invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017. El Jeiroudi was also a co-founder of DOX BOX International Documentary Film Festival in Syria and DOX BOX e.V. non-profit association in Germany.

The film is a companion piece to his 2012 documentary The Act of Killing. Executive producers were Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, and Andre Singer.
