The 8th Astra Film Awards, presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, took place on December 8, 2024, at the Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles. The nominations were announced on November 25, 2024. [1] [2]
The body horror film The Substance and the musical fantasy Wicked led the nominations with eight each, followed by Emilia Pérez with seven and Anora with six. [1] [3] [4] Wicked ultimately won the most awards with four wins, including Best Picture and Best Director (Jon M. Chu). [2]
The nominees for the Creative Arts Awards were announced on the same day as the Film Award nominees, with its winners also announced on December 8. Both ceremonies were recorded and streamed live on KNEKT.tv and YouTube. Comedian Loni Love hosted the Astra Film Awards while actor and comedian Peter Kim hosted the Astra Creative Arts Awards. [1]
This is the second ceremony following the rebranding to The Astra Awards by the Hollywood Creative Alliance. [5] For the genre categories, "Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller" was introduced while "Best Action Feature" was expanded to include science fiction, "Best Comedy Feature" was expanded to include musicals, and "Best Horror Feature" was expanded to include thrillers. Three international-centric categories ("Best International Filmmaker", "Best International Actor", and "Best International Actress") were all discontinued, following their debut at the previous ceremony.

Jacques Audiard is a French film director, producer, and screenwriter. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous accolades including two British Academy Film Awards, eleven Cesar Awards and four prizes from the Cannes Film Festival.

The Hollywood Creative Alliance (HCA) is a 501 c6 membership-based non-profit organization of critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry influencers, and creatives. The vision and mission of the HCA is to amplify diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and culture within the world of entertainment. It was founded in 2016 as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society and renamed in 2019 to Hollywood Critics Association. In 2023, Hollywood Critics Association ceased operations and a new organization called Hollywood Creative Alliance took its place, with its awards called the Astra Awards.

Emilia Pérez is a 2024 Spanish-language French musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiard. The French production is based on Audiard's opera libretto of the same name, which was in turn loosely adapted from Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez, and is about a feared Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Saldaña) to help her disappear and achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman. Its original songs were written by Camille, while its original score was provided by Clément Ducol. The choreographic sections of the film are designed by Damien Jalet.
