Richard Allen Wingo (born July 16,1956) is an American Republican politician and a former professional football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played five seasons for the Green Bay Packers from 1979 to 1984. He was selected by the Packers in the seventh round of the 1979 NFL draft out of the University of Alabama.
He was a part of one of the most famous plays in college football history,"The Goal Line Stand" in Alabama's Sugar Bowl victory over Penn State in 1979. [1] He played for college coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. From Pee Wee football through high school,he led every team he played for in tackles.[ citation needed ]
Wingo is the only player in Packers history to have a scoring total of 1 point. On September 6,1981,against the Chicago Bears,he caught a pass in the end zone for a successful point-after-touchdown after a botched place-kick attempt. (At the time, either a successful place-kick or advancing the ball into the end zone both counted for one point.)
Wingo served as strength coach at Alabama under former head coach Bill Curry. [2]
In 2014 Wingo ran for a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives, winning the general election in November. [3] He was sworn into office in 2015. [4] He served 2 terms, being reelected in 2018.
The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago. The Bears compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The Bears have won nine NFL Championships, eight prior to the AFL–NFL merger and one Super Bowl. They also hold the NFL records for the most enshrinees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the most retired jersey numbers. The Bears' NFL championships and overall victories are second behind the Green Bay Packers, with whom they have a long-standing rivalry.
A drop kick is a type of kick in various codes of football. It involves a player intentionally dropping the ball onto the ground and then kicking it either 'as it rises from the first bounce' (rugby) or 'as,or immediately after,it touches the ground'.
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay,Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) North division. They are the third-oldest franchise in the NFL,established in 1919,and are the only non-profit,community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Since 1957,home games have been played at Lambeau Field. They hold the record for the most wins in NFL history.
A punter (P) in gridiron football is a special teams player who receives the snapped ball directly from the line of scrimmage and then punts (kicks) the football to the opposing team so as to limit any field position advantage. This generally happens on a fourth down in American football and a third down in Canadian football. Punters may also occasionally take part in fake punts in those same situations, when they throw or run the football instead of punting.
Russell Erxleben is an American former professional football player and currency investor. He shares the record for the longest successful field goal in NCAA history at 67 yards, which he set in 1977 while playing for the University of Texas. Erxleben was a three-time All-American punter. He was selected in the first round of the NFL draft,an extremely rare occurrence for a kicker. After an NFL career lasting six years,he became a currency investor. Convicted of securities fraud in 1999,he was released from federal prison in 2005. He was again convicted of investment fraud in 2014 and sentenced to 90 months in federal prison.
Robert Paul Gould III is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker for 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Bears,New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Gould was originally signed by the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He played with the Bears from 2005 to 2015,earning first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2006,and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
Mason Walker Crosby is an American professional football placekicker who is a free agent. He played college football at Colorado, and earned unanimous All-American honors. The Green Bay Packers selected him in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft.
A field goal (FG) is a means of scoring in gridiron football. To score a field goal, the team in possession of the ball must place kick,or drop kick, the ball through the goal,i.e.,between the uprights and over the crossbar. The entire ball must pass through the vertical plane of the goal, which is the area above the crossbar and between the uprights or,if above the uprights, between their outside edges. American football requires that a field goal must only come during a play from scrimmage while Canadian football retains open field kicks and thus field goals may be scored at any time from anywhere on the field and by any player. The vast majority of field goals,in both codes, are placekicked. Drop-kicked field goals were common in the early days of gridiron football but are almost never attempted in modern times. A field goal may also be scored through a fair catch kick, but this is also extremely rare. In most leagues,a successful field goal awards three points.
Richard Delano Campbell is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1981 to 1984. He played college football for the California Golden Bears. He was selected in the first round of the 1981 NFL draft with the sixth overall pick.
The Bears–Packers rivalry is a National Football League (NFL) rivalry between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The two teams have a combined 70 members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, have won a combined 22 NFL championships, and includes five Super Bowl championships which are the only Super Bowl wins of their shared NFC North division. They hold the top two spots for most wins all-time;the Bears had the record from 1921 until 2022,when the Packers took over in a game between the two teams, who were tied at 786 wins going into the game.
In gridiron football,a two-point conversion or two-point convert is a play a team attempts instead of kicking a one-point conversion immediately after it scores a touchdown. In a two-point conversion attempt, the team that just scored must run a play from scrimmage close to the opponent's goal line and advance the ball across the goal line in the same manner as if they were scoring a touchdown. If the team succeeds,it earns two additional points in addition to the six points for the touchdown, for a total of eight points. If the team fails,no additional points are scored.
The 2014 Chicago Bears season was the franchise's 95th season in the National Football League (NFL),as well as the second and final under head coach Marc Trestman. The Bears failed to qualify for the playoffs after being eliminated from contention in week fourteen, their fourth consecutive season without making the postseason.
The 2015 Chicago Bears season was the franchise's 96th season in the National Football League (NFL). After the firing of general manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman following the 2014 season, the team hired former New Orleans Saints director of player personnel Ryan Pace and Denver Broncos head coach John Fox to fill those positions, respectively. Fox's hiring marked the Bears' third head coach in four seasons.
John Kimball Scott III is an American professional football punter for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Alabama, and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. He has also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 2018 season was the Chicago Bears' 99th season in the National Football League (NFL),as well as the first under head coach Matt Nagy, who took over the job after John Fox was fired in 2017 following a three-year tenure.
Eddy Piñeiro Jr. ( pin-YAIR-oh;is an American professional football placekicker for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League. He is currently third all-time in career field goal percentage at 88.8%.
The Double Doink was a game-ending field goal attempt by Chicago Bears kicker Cody Parkey in the National Football League (NFL)'s 2018 NFC Wild Card game. Parkey's failed 43-yard field goal attempt against the Philadelphia Eagles was partially blocked by Eagles defensive lineman Treyvon Hester, hit the left upright, then bounced off the crossbar, and finally fell back out onto the goal line finishing on the 3-yard line. The sixth-seeded,defending Super Bowl champion Eagles won the game over the third-seeded Bears,16–15,at Soldier Field in Chicago,Illinois, and advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
The Instant Replay Game, also known as the Asterisk Game, was a National Football League (NFL) game between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears on November 5,1989. The Packers defeated the visiting Bears 14–13 on a controversial fourth-down touchdown pass from Don Majkowski to Sterling Sharpe with less than a minute to play in the game. Line judge Jim Quirk initially called a penalty on the play for an illegal forward pass, thus nullifying the potentially game-winning score. Quirk's penalty was based on the belief that Majkowski had thrown the pass after the ball had passed the line of scrimmage.
Dez Caught It was a National Football League (NFL) Divisional Playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers on January 11,2015. The game, which was played at Lambeau Field in Green Bay,Wisconsin, gained notoriety after a play in which Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant attempted to catch a pass from quarterback Tony Romo in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter. The pass was initially ruled a catch before controversially being overturned after officials determined Bryant did not complete the process of a catch while he was lunging towards the end zone. The Packers would get the ball on the turnover on downs and run out the clock. They won by a score of 26–21 and moved on to the NFC Championship Game, where they would lose to the Seattle Seahawks. In the following years, the NFL changed the rules regarding catching a pass while falling to the ground. The new rules would likely have given Bryant a completed catch, although what constitutes a catch has continued to be debated.
