Richard A. Licht (born March 25,1948) is an American judge and lawyer who served as the Lieutenant Governor of the U.S. state of Rhode Island from 1985 to 1989. A Democrat,he previously served in the Rhode Island State Senate from 1973 to 1984. He is an alumnus of Harvard Law School. [1] [2] His uncle,Frank Licht,served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1969 to 1973.
In 2011,Licht was appointed by Gov. Lincoln Chaffee as the Director of Administration of Rhode Island.
In 2014,he was appointed as a Rhode Island Superior Court judge. [1] In 2017,he was assigned to the Business Calendar,a specialized business court track within the Superior Court. [3]
In 2023,Licht was struck by a car as a pedestrian near the Rhode Island State House. [4] He sustained serious injuries but made a successful recovery and returned to the bench after six months. [5]
Richard Licht was born to Julius Licht and Irene Lash Licht in Providence,Rhode Island. He is of Ukrainian Jewish descent. His paternal grandparents were Rochel "Rose" Kassed from Klevan and Jacob Licht from Rivne, [6] and his mother's grandparents emigrated from Kyiv;the family name had originally been Lishinksy. [7] His uncle Frank Licht was the first Jewish governor of Rhode Island. [8]
Licht made his foray into politics contributing to the gubernatorial campaign of his uncle,Frank Licht.
He was elected to the Rhode Island Senate in 1972,representing the East Side of Providence.
He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1984,serving under Gov. Edward D. DiPrete.
Licht ran unsuccessful campaigns for United States Senate in the 1988 United States Senate election in Rhode Island,in which he won the Democratic primary,and in the 2000 United States Senate election in Rhode Island.
Licht was a champion of Progressive causes such as reproductive access,paid parental leave,and domestic violence prevention.
Richard Licht is a devoted husband and father of four. He is an avid golfer and four-time club champion of Ledgemont Country Club.
Edward Daniel DiPrete is an American politician. He served as the 70th Governor of Rhode Island for three two-year terms,serving from 1985 to 1991. Convicted of numerous corruption charges,he is the only Rhode Island governor to have gone to prison.
Classical High School,founded in 1843,is a public magnet school in the Providence School District,in Providence,Rhode Island. It was originally an all-male school but has since become co-ed. Classical's motto is Certare,Petere,Reperire,Neque Cedere,a Latin translation of the famous phrase taken from Tennyson's poem "Ulysses","To Strive,to Seek,to Find,and Not to Yield". It has been rated "High Performing and Sustaining" by its performance in 2005 on the New Standards Reference Exam,placing third in the state. The school also made Newsweek's America's Best High Schools of 2012 with a 99% graduation rate,95% college bound,an average SAT score of 1578,and an average AP score of 2.8. Classical High School stands roughly at the intersection of the Federal Hill,West End,and Upper South Providence neighborhoods.
The Rhode Island Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. The Court consists of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices,all selected by the Governor of Rhode Island from candidates vetted by the Judicial Nominating Commission. Each justice enjoys lifetime tenure and no mandatory retirement age,similar to Federal judges. Justices may be removed only if impeached for improper conduct by a vote of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and convicted by trial in the Rhode Island Senate.

Frank Licht was an American politician and the 67th Governor of Rhode Island from 1969 to 1973,serving as the first Jewish governor in Rhode Island state history. He was also an associate justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court from 1956 to 1968 and a member of the Rhode Island Senate from 1949 to 1956.
Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Rhode Island since August 1,2013. The state had authorized a limited form of domestic partnerships from 2002 to 2011 and the formation of civil unions from 2011 until the state began recognizing same-sex marriages in 2013. Same-sex marriage legislation passed the House of Representatives on January 24,2013. The Senate passed an amended version on April 24,2013 by a 26–12 vote,which the House approved on May 2 by 56 votes to 15. The bill was signed into law by Governor Lincoln Chafee the same day,and took effect on August 1,with the first same-sex marriages taking place that day. Rhode Island was the last U.S. state in New England to legalize same-sex marriage.
