Richard Iwa Idro is a Ugandan pediatric neurologist, researcher and academic, who serves as an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. [1]

Early life and education

Idro was born in Moyo, Uganda in 1970. After attending local primary and secondary schools, he was admitted to Makerere University School of Medicine, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. In 2001, he was awarded a Master of Medicine degree in Pediatrics by the same medical school. His degree of Doctor of Philosophy was awarded by the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, in 2008. He specialized as a pediatric neurologist. [2] [3]

In October 2022, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) of the United Kingdom. It is the highest recognition that can be bestowed to a pediatrician in the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. [4]

Career

Dr Richard Idro is a specialized pediatrician, with super specialization as a neurologist. His research interests include HIV/AIDS in adolescents, the interactions between HIV and malaria, and the prognostic features of cerebral malaria, among other topics. Recently, his work has expanded into studies of brain injury in sickle cell anemia, viral encephalitis and childhood epilepsy. [5]

He also concurrently serves as an Honorary Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Neurologist at Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH), in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. MNRH is the teaching hospital of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. [5] [6]

He is a leading authority on Nodding disease, an ill-understood pediatric mental condition, characterized by seizures, mental retardation and stunted growth. The cause remains unknown and there was no known cure, as of 2019. [7]

Honors and awards

In February 2019, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) announced Dr Richard Idro as the winner of the Greenwood Africa Award 2019. The award comprises (a) a medal (b) one week of residence at the LSHTM (c) The winner will be required to give a Greenwood Lecture (d) During the week of residence at LSTMH in London, the winner is required to interact with relevant academics and give seminars as the situation may warrant. The award is restricted to mid-level medical researchers in infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. It is awarded every three years and Dr. Idro is the first ever recipient. [5] [6] [8]

Other considerations

He is a member of the eight-person board of directors of Global Health Uganda, a non-profit organization that aims at improving pediatric health research in Uganda. [9]

Christine Joyce Dradidi Ondoa is a physician and medical administrator who is regarded as one of Uganda's finest leaders especially in ensuring that the quality of health service delivery in Uganda is improved, and discipline and ethical code of conduct among health workers is observed. She is a Ugandan paediatrician and Christian Leader. She currently serves as the Director General of the Uganda AIDS Commission. She was appointed to that position by the President of Uganda in February 2014. Prior to that, she served as a Senior Presidential Advisor to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Public Health. She was a member of the board of directors of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). She was Minister of Health in the Ugandan Cabinet from 2011 to 2013. She was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011, but was replaced by Ruhakana Rugunda on 23 May 2013. On account of being a cabinet minister she was a member of the Ugandan Parliament, in an ex officio capacity. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, one of the fourteen regional referral hospitals in Uganda.

Peter Ndimbirwe Mugyenyi, MBChB, DCH, FRCPI, FRCPE, ScD is a Ugandan physician, HIV/AIDS researcher, medical administrator and author. He is executive director and co-founder of the Joint Clinical Research Centre, and a leading authority on treatment of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Jane Ruth Aceng is a Ugandan pediatrician and politician. She is the Minister of Health in the Cabinet of Uganda. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. Before that, from June 2011 until June 2016, she served as the Director General of Medical Services in the Ugandan Ministry of Health.

Joyce Morikualso calledJoyce Kaducu, is a Ugandan pediatrician, academic and politician. She is now state Minister for Primary education in the new cabinet starting 2021. Previously she was in the Minister of State for Primary Health Care in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016, replacing Sarah Achieng Opendi, who became State Minister for Health, General Duties. The Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is a medical research institution in Uganda, specializing in HIV/AIDS treatment and management.

Peter Kyobe Waiswa is a Ugandan researcher, medical doctor and academic administrator. He is an associate professor of Health Policy, Planning and Management at Makerere University. Waiswa is a health policy and health systems expert with a special interest in maternal, newborn and child health in low and middle-income countries.
