Richard James Newman is a writer, broadcaster, and reality TV contestant, best known for participating in the seventh series of the British reality television programme Big Brother .
Though born in England, Newman emigrated with his family to Edmonton, Alberta, in 1976 at the age of five. Newman studied Radio & Television arts at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. After graduating he was employed as a traffic co-ordinator at the CKUA Radio Network and eventually went on to write scripts for the station. He then returned to the UK in 1996, moving to London to pursue a career as a writer and broadcaster.
In the summer of 2006, Newman participated in the seventh series of Big Brother, entering the house on Day 1. Richard held the record for most evictions survived at 6, until Freddie "Halfwit" Fisher broke the record with 7 in the tenth series. Newman eventually ended up in the final, placing 4th, after 93 days inside the house. Shortly after, Richard made an appearance on The Charlotte Church Show, Richard & Judy as well as the game show The Mint. Richard was interviewed and photographed by Attitude magazine after leaving the Big Brother house, he also appeared on the cover Boyz magazine wearing his trademark cowboy hat. He went on to host Mr Gay UK that year, and in October 2006 it was announced that Richard would be working as a host on the digital station Gaydar Radio. [1]
In the summer of 2008, Newman made a return to TV appearing alongside fellow housemate Lea Walker on E4's Big Brother's Little Brother.
Newman spent two years at Gaydar Radio where he presented two shows: The Saturday Morning Show and The Dicky & Dolly Show, which he presented every Sunday morning along with fellow Big Brother 7 housemate Lea Walker. During this time, he interviewed celebrities such as Alan Carr, Samantha Fox, Alison Moyet, Kim Wilde, Carol Decker, Immodesty Blaize, Gail Porter, The Puppini Sisters, Margarita Pracatan, Russell Grant, Victoria Wilson James (Soul II Soul), Luciana (Bodyrox) and Russian pop singer Sergey. During his time at Gaydar Radio, the station won the 2007 Sony Radio Award for Digital Station of the year; it was again nominated in 2008. Along with Gaydar Radio, Newman also collected an Arqiva award in 2007 and 2008 for Digital Station of the Year.
In May 2009, Newman took part in a panel discussion at the 23rd London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival about the Stonewall riots to be included on the 25th anniversary DVD release of Greta Schiller Emmy Award-winning documentary Before Stonewall released by Peccadillo Pictures. Newman was part of a Q&A session alongside Before Stonewall director Greta Schiller - Film director Richard Kwietniowski (Owning Mahowny & Love And Death On Long Island) - German film director, Monika Treut (Seduction: The Cruel Woman) - Former mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, and British Gay Activist, Alan Wakeman. On the DVD, Newman speaks openly about his own experiences growing up gay and expresses his thoughts on the Stonewall riots that took place on 27 June 1969 when the police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York.
Newman has since become an accomplished freelance writer contributing mainly to the gay press in the UK, Europe and Canada. He has written for Boyz, QX, Scene 24/7 and Winq Magazine.

Big Brother is the British version of the international reality television franchise Big Brother created by producer John de Mol in 1997. Broadcast yearly from 18 July 2000 to 5 November 2018, and returned on 8 October 2023, the show follows the format of other national editions, in which a group of contestants, known as "housemates", live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. They are continuously monitored by live television cameras and personal audio microphones. Throughout the competition, housemates are "evicted" from the house by public televoting. The last remaining housemate wins the competition and a cash prize. The series takes its name from the oppressive character known by that name in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Kate Lawler is an English television personality, presenter, model and DJ. She became the first female winner of Big Brother UK after winning the third series of the reality series in 2002. Since Big Brother, she has presented various radio shows including Capital FM and Virgin Radio. She has also appeared in television series including Celebrity Wrestling and Love Island.
Brian Patrick Robert Dowling is an Irish television presenter. He rose to fame after winning the second series of reality series Big Brother, and went on to win Ultimate Big Brother in 2010. In 2007, he came third in Hell's Kitchen and in 2008, he was runner-up in the Irish reality television series Fáilte Towers. Dowling then guest-presented Live from Studio Five alongside Kate Walsh from 2010 until its cancellation in February 2011.

Mr Gay UK was a British annual beauty contest for gay men, with regional heats held in gay nightclubs with a grand final usually at a gay venue. It began in 1982 as "Mr Hardware" designed to promote a gay mail order company. The event, held in the Heaven nightclub, was filmed by the BBC as part of a documentary entitled Something For the Ladies.
Chanelle Jade Hayes is an English television personality, model, singer and businesswoman. She was a student at NEW College, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, studying Spanish, music and English before becoming well known by appearing on the Channel 4 reality series Big Brother in 2007, when she was 19. In June 2016, for his last issue as editor, Prince William sat for the cover of Attitude, the first time a member of the royal family had appeared in a gay magazine.
Ricky James Norwood is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Fatboy in the BBC soap opera EastEnders and its online spin-off EastEnders: E20 (2010–2011). Following his initial exit from the soap, Norwood appeared as a housemate on the eighteenth series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2016 and finished as the runner-up. He is also set to compete in the sixteenth series of Dancing on Ice in 2024.

Purple Radio was an internet and British digital radio station for a gay, lesbian and gay-friendly audience. It was available on a DAB multiplex in London and also online. It was the first full-time gay and lesbian radio station and broadcast 24 hours a day, with live broadcasts from a different nightclub every night.
Celebrity Big Brother 13 was the thirteenth series of the British reality television series Celebrity Big Brother. The series launched on 3 January 2014 on Channel 5 and was originally meant to end after 22 days on 24 January 2014. However, it was extended due to ratings success and instead ended after 27 days on 29 January 2014, making it the longest Channel 5 series of the show and the joint-longest series, along with Celebrity Big Brother 7 in 2010. It is the sixth celebrity series and the ninth series of Big Brother overall to air on the channel. Emma Willis returned to host the series, whilst Rylan Clark returned to present spin-off show Big Brother's Bit on the Side along with Willis.

Big Brother 2023, also known as Big Brother 20, was the twentieth series of Big Brother to air in the United Kingdom. It is the first series to air on ITV2 after ITV gained the rights to the series in August 2022, almost four years since it last aired on Channel 5. The series began on 8 October 2023, with a launch show airing simultaneously on both ITV and ITV2, with the remainder of the series broadcasting primarily on the latter channel. It is co-presented by AJ Odudu and Will Best, who also front the companion show Big Brother: Late & Live.
