Rii Sen (born Rituparna Sen) is an Indian actress who works in Bengali cinema. [1] She started her career as a freelance model and television actress. Her debut film was Tepantorer Mathe, but it was not released in theatres because of obscene scenes. Sen had participated as contestant in Bigg Boss bangla season 2 and she was the 2nd runner up in the show. She has acted in movies like Bishh, Gandu , and Cosmic Sex .

Career

Early career

She has acted in a few television series (Tithir Otithi, Ekhane Akash Neel) and short films. The actress was also a contestant of Bigg Boss Bangla Season 2, [4]

Film career

2009–2011

Sen acted in Tepantorer Mathe, which was her debut feature film, but it was not released. [4] In 2009 Sen worked in a documentary, Love in India, directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee. The subject of the documentary was dehotatwa (worshiping through one's body). [3] In the same year she acted in another documentary, Many Stories of Love and Hate, directed by Shyamal Karmakar. The documentary was screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2010. [5]

In 2009, she acted in Bissh, directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee. In this film Rii played the character Anushka, a college student. According to Rii, this was a very complex role and playing the character was very tough for her. She said in an interview— "I play Bee in Bishh... Bee is not a simple, straightforward girl. She is complicated, confused yet confident. Maybe that's why she is called Bee. I almost lost my identity while getting into the skin of the character." [6]

In the 2010 film Gandu, Sen played a lead role. For the character, Sen was required to portray frontal nudity. Qaushiq Mukherjee, the director of the film, said in an interview that he cast Rii because she was the only heroine (of the Bengali film industry) who could have played this role. [7] IBNLive appreciated the work of Rii and wrote in their review— "All the characters have put in their best efforts. Both Komolika and Rii have exuberated confidence in all the sex scenes, showing their maturity as actresses." [8] In the 2010 film Autograph , directed by Srijit Mukherji, Sen played a minor role.

2011–present

Sen acted in 2012 film Koyekti Meyer Golpo, directed by Subrata Sen. In this film she played the character of the wife of a don. [9] She also acted in the Bengali film Cosmic Sex, directed by Amitabh Chakraborty. The story of the film revolves around a young man's sexual self-discovery. Kripa, the young man, meets a prostitute, a eunuch and a female ascetic named Sadhana during his journey. The film was screened at Osian's film festival and got a warm reception. [4]

Sen appeared as Horotoni in the 2013 film Tasher Desh , directed by Q aka Qaushiq Mukherjee. The film has been described as "trippy adaptation" of the Rabindrath Tagore's namesake play by Indian medias. [10]

According to a newspaper report published in The Times of India in May 2013, Sen is acting in debutant director Anirban Mukherjee's Byanka Prithibi. In this film she is playing the character of a housewife. [11] In 2014 it was announced that Rii would appear in Q (Quashiq Mukherjee) and Nikon's upcoming movie 'LUDO', playing a role not previously seen on Indian screens. [12] [13]

She has appeared in serials like Trinayani in Zee Bangla Dhrubotara , Star Jalsha and Star Jalsha's Durga Durgeshwari , Jai Kali Kalkattawali and Sanjher Baati .

Sen as an actress of alternative cinema

Sen is regarded as a prominent actress of alternative Bengali cinema. [2] In an article of Mint , the performances of Sen was described as– "the common link between a set of films that has been challenging the norms of acceptability and decorum in the past few years." [4] According to Sen, sexuality is a cult for her. She also told— she wants to push her sexuality in cinema "to the borderline where it becomes extreme and dangerous". [3]

Sen was shot for frontal nudity scenes in Qaushik Mukherjee's Gandu and Amitabh Chakraborty's Cosmic Sex. Though Paoli Dam is generally credited as the first Indian actress to shoot full nude scenes, according to a report of The Times of India , Sen went for frontal nudity scene six months before Dam's work. [14] Sen told she was happy that she could use her body for "a great cinematic purpose". She also told— "As an artiste, I feel, it's important to record the passing time through one's work. And I don't want my work to be seen as gimmick of any sort." [14]

Debashree Roy also known as Debasree Roy, is an Indian actress, dancer, choreographer, politician and animal rights activist. As an actress, she is known for her work in Hindi and Bengali cinema. She has been cited as the reigning queen of Bengali commercial cinema. She acted in more than a hundred films and won over forty awards, including a National Award, three BFJA Awards, five Kalakar Awards and an Anandalok Award. As a dancer, she is known for her stage adaptations of the various forms of Indian folk dances as well as her innovative dance forms imbued with elements from Indian classical, tribal and folk dance. She runs Natraj dance troupe. She is the founder of Debasree Roy Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works for the cause of stray animals. Autograph is a 2010 Indian Bengali drama film by debutant director Srijit Mukherji. The movie is a tribute to Satyajit Ray's 1966 film Nayak and yesteryear Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, who portrayed the title role in the film. This was the first collaboration between Srijit Mukherjee and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The movie is being remade in Malayalam.

Gandu is a 2010 Indian erotic black-and-white art drama film directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee. It features Anubrata Basu, Joyraj Bhattacharjee, Kamalika Banerjee, Silajit Majumder, and Rii Sen in the lead roles. The film's music is by the alternative rock band Five Little Indians. Gandu previewed at Yale University before making its international premiere on 29 October 2010 at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival in New York City. Gandu was an official selection at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival and was also screened at the Slamdance Film Festival.

Tasher Desh is a 2012 Bengali-language fantasy film directed by Q. The film has been described as a "trippy adaptation" of the 1933 Rabindrath Tagore play by Indian media. It begins with a nihilist playwright searching where the play, 'Tasher Desh' by Rabindranath Tagore is being played. He goes to major play theatres in Kolkata like The Academy of Fine Arts but no one has a show of Tasher Desh in the near time. He finally writes his own adapted script of the play by Tagore and completely immerses himself into it. Most of the dialogues and all the songs in the film are from the original play by Tagore while director Q is picturising himself as the playwright. It features Soumyak Kanti De Biswas, Anubrata Basu, Tillotama Shome, Rii, Joyraj Bhattacharjee, Tinu Verghis, and Immaduddin Shah in the lead roles. Tasher Desh made its international premiere on 11 November 2012 at the 7th Rome International Film Festival. The film had its release in India on 23 August 2013.

Cosmic Sex is a 2013 art-house independent Indian Bengali-language film written and directed by Amitabh Chakraborty and produced by Putul Mahmood. The film deals with the connection between sex and spirituality.

Payel De, also known as Payel Dey, is a Bengali actress. She began her career in 2006 with Zee Bangla's Ekdin Pratidin daily soap and portrayed the character Chandrayee as a supporting role. She is known for her work in television soap opera serials Durga and Behula where she played the title character, both of these aired on Star Jalsha. She started her career while she was studying in college. Afterwards, she starred as Aalo Moitra in the TV serial Bodhu Kon Alo Laaglo Chokhe which aired on Star Jaisha. She has also played lead characters in Maa Durga, Tobu Mone Rekho, Ardhangini, Jaahanara, Durga Durgeshwari, Chuni Panna and currently Desher Maati.

Durga Durgeshwari is an Indian Bengali-language television soap opera, a sequel /reboot version of the popular series Durga. It follows the journey of Dugga who has to vanquish the Evil with the blessings of Maa Durgeshwari. The show stars Sampurna Mondal and Bishwarup Bandyopadhyay as protagonists, where as Ankita Majhi and Swagata Mukherjee as antagonists. It premiered on 2 September 2019 on Bengali GEC Star Jalsha. The series was aired every day at 6:30pm. The show took Guriya Jekhane Guddu Sekhane's time slot before being replaced by Titli. Before ending, a new storyline was introduced with new protagonists but failed to gain good trp unlike the prequel.
