Cinema of West Bengal, also known as Tollywood or Bengali cinema, is the segment of Indian cinema, dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Bengali language widely spoken in the state of West Bengal. It is based in the Tollygunge region of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The origins of the nickname Tollywood, a portmanteau of the words Tollygunge and Hollywood, dates back to 1932. It was a historically important film industry, at one time the centre of Indian film production. The Bengali film industry is known for producing many of Indian cinema's most critically acclaimed global Parallel Cinema and art films, with several of its filmmakers gaining prominence at the Indian National Film Awards as well as international acclaim.
Gaaner Oparey is an Indian Bengali television serial which aired on Star Jalsha from 28 June 2010 to 16 April 2011. This TV musical marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The concept was a brainchild of the Indian director Rituparno Ghosh. The songs were all popular Rabindra sangeets. Prosenjit Chatterjee launched an audio CD of its tracks on Mahalaya on 12 October 2015. On account of Rabindranath Tagore's 157th birthday, Star Jalsha added Gaaner Oparey on Disney+ Hotstar on 9 May 2018. It was re-aired on Star Jalsha during the 2020 lockdown period, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indrasish Roy is an Indian film and television actor. He played the role of Tintin in serial Gaaner Opare. Later he played the lead role of Chandrakiran Chowdhury, the male protagonist of serial Adwitiya. He debuted in films with Kaushik Ganguly's Rang Milanti. He also won hearts by playing the role of Lalon in Star Jalsha's Dhulokona.
Adwitiya is a Bengali television series that aired from 13 June 2011 to 2 March 2012 on Star Jalsha channel. It was produced by Ideas Creations and the concept was initialized by Prosenjit Chatterjee. The show was directed by Joydeep Mukherjee and the script was jointly written by Anuja Chattopadhyay and Kaushik Bhattacharya. The series was shot on the backdrop of Sunderbans. It stars Bengali actors Indrasish Roy, Sohini Sarkar and Gaurav Chakraborty. It won awards for Best Villain and Best Couple at Star Jalsha Paribar awards in 2012.
Byomkesh was a 2014 Indian Bengali crime fiction television series based on the Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The series starred Gaurav Chakrabarty, Saugata Bandyopadhyay and Ridhima Ghosh as Byomkesh Bakshi, Ajit and Satyabati respectively. The series premiered on 20 November 2014 on Colors Bangla channel and ended on 14 November 2015. This series is re-runned on 4 March 2024. The first episode was narrated by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty.
Milon Tithi is an Indian Bengali language television soap that premiered on 23 November 2015 on Star Jalsha. The story primarily revolves around Aditya, Arjun, Ahona and Bonhi. It was produced by Acropoliis Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and starred Riju Biswas, Ushasi Ray, Jeetu Kamal, Debjani Chakraborty and Ishaan Majumder in the lead roles. The show was replaced by Pratidaan.
Goyenda Ginni was an Indian Bengali crime drama anthology television series that premiered on 7 September 2015 to 25 December 2016 and aired on Zee Bangla. It was produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, it starred Indrani Haldar, Saheb Chatterjee, Aditi Chatterjee and Indrajeet Bose. It marks the comeback of Haldar into Bengali television. It replaced the show Raage Anuraage. It got back in March 2020 due to COVID-19 situation. This Show is 4th time repeat telecast on Zee Bangla on 13 May 2024 ; It fetched a highest trp of 8.0.
Byomkesh Pawrbo is a 2016 Indian Bengali language thriller film directed by Arindam Sil. The film is a sequel to the 2015 film Har Har Byomkesh. Produced jointly under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films, the film reprises cinematography and music by Soumik Haldar and Bickram Ghosh respectively. Sayantika Banerjee as Gulab Bai (cameo) does a special dance number for a particular scene which was choreographed by Saroj Khan. The film stars Abir Chatterjee, Ritwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar in lead roles. The movie is based on the story Amriter Mrityu by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. The film was released on 16 December 2016 to positive critical reception.
Phagun Bou is an Indian Bengali television soap opera that premiered on 19 March 2018 on Star Jalsha. It was produced under Magic Moments Motion Pictures of Saibal Banerjee and Leena Gangopadhyay. The show starred Vikram Chatterjee and Oindrila Sen in lead roles and Koushik Roy in a negative role.
Bokul Kotha is an Indian Bengali television soap opera that aired from 4 December 2017 to 1 February 2020 on Zee Bangla. The show was produced by Acropoliis Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and starred Ushasi Ray and Honey Bafna in lead roles and Uponita Bnaerjee, Sumanta Mukherjee, Shreyasree Samanta, Suvajit Kar, Arindam Banerjee and Biplab Banerjee in supporting roles.This Show is 2nd time repeat telecast on Zee Bangla on 13 May 2024.
Nokshi Kantha is an Indian television soap opera in Bengali that premiered on 12 November 2018 and aired on the Bengali General Entertainment Channel Zee Bangla. The show was produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures of Saibal Banerjee and Leena Gangopadhyay. The show replaced the popular drama series Andarmahal. It aired its final episode on 10 July 2020. Ki Kore Bolbo Tomay took over its time slot starting 13 July 2020.
Mayurpankhi is an Indian Bengali television soap opera that premiered on 12 November 2018, and aired on Bengali General Entertainment Channel Star Jalsha, and is also available on the digital platform Hotstar. The show was produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures of Saibal Banerjee and Leena Gangopadhyay.
Jai Kali Kalkattawali is an Indian Bengali language anthology crime "Chalo Paltai" drama series that premiered on 24 July 2017 starring Ananya Chatterjee and Biswanath Basu. It was produced by Shree Venkatesh Films. It went off-air on 1 June 2019, airing 661 episodes. It was re-aired on Star Jalsha and Star Jalsha HD during lockdown period, due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Netaji is a Bengali biographical soap opera on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose that premiered on 14 January 2019 and aired on Bengali GEC Zee Bangla. Based majorly on Udyata Kharga Subhash by Achintya Kumar Sengupta and produced by Surinder Films, the series stars Abhishek Bose in the eponymous role, with Basabdatta Chatterjee, marking her comeback on television, Dhruvajyoti Sarkar, Kaushik Chakraborty, Sriparna Roy, Debopriyo Sarkar, Sohan Bandopadhyay, Fahim Mirza appearing in other recurring roles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shooting of the series was stalled. It was rumoured that along with Karunamoyee Rani Rashmoni, this series will be axed the channel. Putting rest to such rumours, the shooting started from June 11 and new episodes started to air from June 15, 2020.The show went off air on 1 st August 2020.
Sreemoyee is an Indian Bengali drama serial that aired on Star Jalsha. It was produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd of Saibal Banerjee and Leena Gangopadhyay, and premiered on 10 June 2019. The show stars Indrani Haldar in the title role. After a successful run of two-and-a-half years it went off-air on 19 December 2021.
Prothoma Kadambini is an Indian Bengali television biographical period drama based on the biography of the first practising female physician of British-ruled India and South Asia, Doctor Kadambini Ganguly. The show aired on Bengali General Entertainment Channel Star Jalsha and is also available on digital platform Hotstar, that was premiered on 16 March 2020. The show is produced by Shree Venkatesh Films and stars Solanki Roy and Honey Bafna in lead roles. The show went to off-air on 28 February 2021.
Dhrubatara is an Indian Bengali television Romantic thriller which used to air on Star Jalsha and is also available on digital platform Disney+ Hotstar. It was premiered on 27 January 2020 The show produced by Acropoliis Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., starred Shyamoupti Mudly and Indrajeet Bose as the titular protagonists Tara and Dhruba respectively. It ended on 19 September 2021 with a happy note.
Khorkuto is a 2020 Indian Bengali-language romantic comedy drama television series that premiered on 17 August 2020 and airs on Bengali General Entertainment Channel Star Jalsha and is also available on the digital platform Disney+ Hotstar. The show is produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures of Saibal Banerjee and Leena Gangopadhyay and starred Trina Saha Bhattacharya and Koushik Roy. The show's plotline and characters seem to have been heavily inspired from a previous show produced by Magic Moments Motion Pictures, Kojagori.
Saathi (transl. Partner) is a 2022 Indian Bengali Language Drama television series which is premiered on 7 February 2022 on Bengali general entertainment channel Sun Bangla. The show is produced by Firdausul Hasan and Probal Haldar of Friends Communication and stars Anumita Dutta and Indrajeet Bose. It is an Remake of the Tamil Television series Roja. It is an Longest Running Serial in Sun Bangla.
