The Rizal Provincial Capitol in Barangay Kapitolyo in Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines was the seat of government of the province of Rizal from 1962 until 2009.
The Rizal Provincial Capitol in Barangay Kapitolyo in Pasig was Rizal province's second provincial capitol succeeding the one built in 1910 along the Pasig River. It was built in 1962 under governor Isidro Rodriguez at the cost of ₱784,000. [1] The lot was donated by the Ortigas family to the Rizal provincial government. [2]
In 1975, Pasig became part of Metro Manila. However the city remains the seat of government of Rizal despite the civic building now geographically outside the province. [3] Nevertheless, residents of Rizal still have to go to the Pasig building for government transactions. [4]
This remains the case until 2009, when a new provincial capitol was opened in Antipolo, [5] [6] This rendered Antipolo as the new de facto capital of Rizal until 2020 when this was formalized.
As per the deed of donation to Rizal, the property reverted to Ortigas & Co. after the capitol was vacated. [2] [3] The site was redeveloped into the Capitol Commons mixed-ussed development from 2011. [3]
In 2020, the seat of goverment of Rizal was officially moved from Pasig to Antipolo. [7]
Ruperto Gaite was the architect of the capitol which had Modernist influences. Gaite inherited the original plan for the building as exhibited by its classical symmetry. [1]
