The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD),officially known as the City of Los Angeles Police Department,is the primary law enforcement agency of Los Angeles,California,United States. With 8,832 officers and 3,000 civilian staff,it is the third-largest municipal police department in the United States,after the New York City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department.
James Kenneth Hahn is an American lawyer and politician. A Democrat,Hahn was elected the 40th mayor of Los Angeles in 2001. He served until 2005,at which time he was defeated in his bid for re-election. Prior to his term as Mayor,Hahn served in several other capacities for the city of Los Angeles,including deputy city attorney (1975–1979),city controller (1981–1985) and city attorney (1985–2001). Hahn is the only individual in the city's history to have been elected to all three citywide offices. He is currently a sitting judge on the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Debra Wong Yang is the former United States Attorney for the Central District of California. She was appointed in May 2002 by President George W. Bush,who made her the first Asian American woman to serve as a United States Attorney. In 2009,Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa nominated Yang to a vacancy on the Los Angeles Police Commission. In 2016,she was listed as the potential choice for SEC Chief in Donald Trump's cabinet.
Daryl Francis Gates was an American police officer who served as chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from 1978 to 1992. His length of tenure in this position was second only to that of William H. Parker. Gates is credited with the creation of SWAT teams alongside fellow Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer John Nelson,who others claim was the originator of SWAT in 1965. Gates also co-founded the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
The Rampart scandal was a police corruption scandal which unfolded in Los Angeles,California during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The scandal concerned widespread criminal activity within the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (CRASH) anti-gang unit of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division. More than 70 police officers were initially implicated in various forms of misconduct,including police brutality,planting of false evidence,stealing and drug dealing,bank robbery,perjury and cover-ups thereof.
William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American businessman and former law enforcement officer who served two non-consecutive tenures as the New York City Police Commissioner and currently one of only two NYPD commissioners to do so. He previously served as the Commissioner of the Boston Police Department (BPD) (1993–1994) and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) (2002–2009). He is the only person to have led the police departments of the United States' two largest cities –New York and Los Angeles.

He was appointed to the new position in October 2011 and is responsible for the 1,200 sworn police officers and civilian security officers that protect Los Angeles International Airport,Ontario International Airport,and Van Nuys Airport. He is also responsible for all fire and emergency medical services at LAWA's three airports. Alikhan is a former distinguished professor of homeland security and counterterrorism at the National Defense University (NDU),College of International Security Affairs in Washington,D.C. He teaches and lectures on a variety subjects involving homeland and national security issues for U.S. military and civilian security professionals. and is a recognized expert on U.S. government homeland security and counter terrorism policies.
Antonio Ramón Villaraigosa is an American politician who served as the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles from 2005 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party,Villaraigosa was a national co-chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign,a member of President Barack Obama's Transition Economic Advisory Board,and chair of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
George Gascón is an American attorney and former police officer who served as the District Attorney of Los Angeles County from December 7,2020 to December 3,2024. A member of the Democratic Party and a former member of the Republican Party,Gascón served as the district attorney of San Francisco from 2011 to 2019. Prior to his work as a prosecutor,he was an assistant chief of police for the LAPD,and Chief of Police in Mesa,Arizona and San Francisco.
Charles Lloyd Beck is a retired American police officer,formerly serving as the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and subsequently as the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. A veteran of the department with over four decades as an officer,he is known for commanding and rehabilitating the Rampart Division after the Rampart scandal;and for technology enhancements during his time as Chief of Detectives. He agreed to be interim Superintendent of Police in Chicago in late 2019 while the city searches nationwide for a replacement for retiring Eddie Johnson. Beck took the helm of the Chicago Police Department on December 2,2019,after Johnson was fired. On April 15,2020,Beck stepped down and was replaced by former Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown,who had been nominated by Lightfoot to serve as permanent Superintendent. After his retirement he rejoined the Reserve Corps as a Reserve Police Officer and is assigned to the Office Of The Chief Of Police.

In the weeks and months that followed,Ford's shooting triggered multiple demonstrations and a lawsuit by Ford's family claiming $75 million in damages.
The 2022 Los Angeles elections were held on June 7,2022. Voters elected candidates in a nonpartisan primary,with runoff elections scheduled for November 8,2022. Eight of the fifteen seats in the City Council were up for election while three of the seven seats in the LAUSD Board of Education were up for election. The seat of Mayor of Los Angeles was up for election due to incumbent Eric Garcetti's term limit. The seats of the Los Angeles City Controller and the Los Angeles City Attorney were also up for election,as their incumbents,Mike Feuer and Ron Galperin,were running for mayor and California State Controller respectively.
