Robin Wonsley (born 1991) is an American activist and politician who has been a member of the Minneapolis City Council from the 2nd Ward since 2021. [3]
Wonsley was born in Chicago in 1991 and grew up on the South Side. She attended Carleton College as a Posse Foundation [4] Scholar and graduated in 2013 with a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies. [5] After graduation,she was awarded a Watson Fellowship that supported her travel to Canada,Australia,South Africa and Ireland,where she studied criminal justice policies and practices. [5] She moved to Minneapolis in 2014 and became the program coordinator for the University of Minnesota Women's Center and a board member for Restorative Justice Community Action. [6]
She completed a mini MBA in Nonprofit Management from St. Thomas University in 2015 [7] and began a Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota in 2018. [8] During her Ph.D. program,she conducted research on housing and racial disparities in the Gender,Women,and Sexuality Studies Department. [6] [9]
After the 2015 killing of Jamar Clark by police officers in Minneapolis,she became politically active over the next several years,including in the Black Lives Matter movement and Fight for $15 organizing efforts to raise the minimum wage in the city. [8] [6] She joined the Twin Cities chapter of Democratic Socialists of America in March 2020. [10] In the summer of 2020,she participated in the George Floyd protests. [11] She also became an organizer in the defund the police movement,an effort to reallocate some community resources towards crime prevention services and programs. [11]
In 2021,she became the first Black Democratic Socialist to win a seat on the Minneapolis City Council after she defeated 14 year incumbent Cam Gordon,a member of the Green Party of Minnesota. [10] [12] [13] The election also became the first time Minneapolis elected a majority of people of color to the city council. [14] [15]
Wonsley represents the 2nd Ward, [14] which includes the neighborhoods of Cedar-Riverside,Como,Cooper,Longfellow,Prospect Park,Seward,and the University District. [2] After the election,she identified housing as a major issue for the ward,and rent control as one of her policy priorities. [15] She also advocated for the development of policy to address encampments in Minneapolis and the needs of encampment residents [16] [17] and joined four other councilmembers in supporting the development of a rent control policy. [18] In January 2022,she called for a stop to evictions from homeless encampments,and was joined at a protest against eviction at the Near North homeless encampment by councilmembers Elliott Payne,Jeremiah Ellison,Jason Chavez,and Aisha Chughtai. As of January 2024,Wonsley serves as the chair of the Administration &Enterprise Oversight Committee and the vice-chair of the Public Health &Safety Committee. [19]

The police abolition movement gained momentum in the U.S. city of Minneapolis during protests of the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and culminated in the failed Question 2 ballot measure in 2021 to replace the city's police department with a public safety department. The measure would have removed minimum staffing levels for sworn officers,renamed the Minneapolis Police Department as the Minneapolis Department of Public Safety,and shifted oversight of the new agency from the mayor's office to the city council. It required the support of 51 percent of voters in order to pass. In the Minneapolis municipal election held on November 2,2021,the measure failed with 43.8 percent voting for it and 56.2 percent voting against it.

These elections occurred alongside the mayoral race and several other municipal offices,including Park Board and Board of Estimate and Taxation positions. The aftermath of the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis–Saint Paul describes the result of civil disorder between May 26 and June 7,2020,in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Protests began as a response to the murder of George Floyd,a 46-year-old African-American man on May 25,after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds as three other officers assisted during an arrest. The incident was captured on a bystander's video and it drew public outrage as video quickly circulated in the news media by the following day.
The U.S. city of Minneapolis featured officially and unofficially designated camp sites in city parks for people experiencing homelessness that operated from June 10,2020,to January 7,2021. The emergence of encampments on public property in Minneapolis was the result of pervasive homelessness,mitigations measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota,local unrest after the murder of George Floyd,and local policies that permitted encampments. At its peak in the summer of 2020,there were thousands of people camping at dozens of park sites across the city. Many of the encampment residents came from outside of Minneapolis to live in the parks. By the end of the permit experiment,four people had died in the city's park encampments,including the city's first homicide victim of 2021,who was stabbed to death inside a tent at Minnehaha Park on January 3,2021.
A general election was held in Minneapolis on November 2,2021. Minneapolis's mayor was up for election as well as all the seats on the City Council,the two elected seats on the Board of Estimate and Taxation,and all the seats on the Park and Recreation Board. Voters were able to rank up to three candidates for each office in order of preference. Additionally,there were three ballot measures on the ballot related to government structure,public safety,and rent control.

The 2023 Minneapolis City Council election took place in the city of Minneapolis,Minnesota,United States on November 7,2023. The Minneapolis City Council is made up of 13 members,with one council member representing each of the city's 13 wards. Typically,council members serve four year terms,but due to census redistricting,the 2021 and 2023 elections were for two-year terms. The 2023 election was the first to elect members to redrawn districts and the first election since the city's form of government moved to an Executive Mayor-Legislative Council structure. The change was prompted after voters narrowly approved a ballot measure in 2021 to shift certain powers from the city council to the mayor. Topics surrounding public safety,affordable housing,rent control,and racial justice were at the forefront of the campaign.
