Rod Smith (born February 22, 1973) is an American football coach and former player who is currently the interim head coach and offensive coordinator at Jacksonville State University. Prior to that, he was an offensive analyst at the University of Virginia. [1] Smith has also served as the interim head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign.
Smith played college football as a quarterback at Glenville State College from 1993 to 1996, where he played for head coach Rich Rodriguez. [2]
After graduating from Glenville State in 1997, Smith was hired to be the offensive coordinator on his father's coaching staff at Franklin High School in West Virginia. [3] He spent time as the offensive coordinator at both Urbana University in Ohio and West Virginia Tech before reuniting with Rodriguez at both Clemson and West Virginia as a graduate assistant. He was hired by Jim Leavitt to be the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Florida and was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2005 season. Smith resigned from South Florida after the 2006 season to reunite with Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia as the team's quarterbacks coach. [4] [5]
Smith was named the quarterbacks coach at Michigan in 2008 after Rich Rodriguez was named the head coach. [6]
After Rodriguez was fired from Michigan in 2010, Smith spent the 2011 season on Kevin Wilson's staff at Indiana as a co-offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach. [7]
After Rodriguez was hired to be the head coach Arizona in 2012, Smith joined Rodriguez's staff as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. [8] Smith was a nominee for the Broyles Award given annually to the nation's top assistant coach, after the 2017 season at Arizona.
After Rodriguez was fired from Arizona in 2018, Smith departed the Arizona coaching staff to join Lovie Smith's coaching staff at Illinois. [9] He was named the interim head coach after Smith was terminated on December 13, 2020. [10]
Smith was hired by Virginia as an offensive analyst prior to the 2021 season, [11] where he works with offensive coordinator Robert Anae. As of October 29, 2021, the Cavaliers lead the nation in passing offense. He left after the 2021 season.
Smith was hired as an offensive analyst at Penn State in 2022. [12]
Smith was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State on June 12, 2022. [13] Smith was named interim head coach for the 2024 Cure Bowl after Rich Rodriguez resigned to take another coaching position. [14]
On December 21, 2024, it was reported Smith was named the offensive coordinator at Marshall under first-year head coach Tony Gibson. [15]
Smith and his wife Charlene have two children, Alex and Sasha. [16] [17] Alex is currently a defensive back at West Liberty University's football team. [18]

Dirk Jeffrey Koetter is an American football coach who is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Boise State University. He was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL) from 2016 to 2018 and was the head coach at Boise State from 1998 to 2000 and at Arizona State University from 2001 to 2006, compiling a career college football record of 66–44 (.600). Koetter also served as the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Buccaneers.
Richard Alan Rodriguez, also known as Rich Rod, is an American college football coach and former player. He is the current head football coach at West Virginia University, his second stint with his alma mater. Rodriguez previously was the head football coach at Salem University, Glenville State College, the University of Michigan, the University of Arizona, and Jacksonville State University. In 2011, Rodriguez worked as an analyst for CBS Sports.
Michael Todd Graham is an American college football coach and former player. He was most recently the head football coach at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (2020–2021). Graham has served as the head football coach at Rice University (2006), the University of Tulsa (2007–2010), the University of Pittsburgh (2011), and Arizona State University (2012–2017).
Noel Scott Mazzone is an American football coach and former player who is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League (USFL). He is former offensive coordinator at the University of Arizona.
Robert Michael Bobo is an American college football coach who is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Georgia, his alma mater. He was the head coach at Colorado State from 2015 to 2019. Bobo is known for his pro-style type offensive schemes which cater to the ability to control clock and create long methodical drives. He has recently come under criticism for lackluster offenses and the inability to game prep or adjust in the face of competent opponents. One chief criticism is for running predictable play calls, valuing execution over ingenuity. Football teams and players have historically regressed under Bobo’s tutelage.
William L. Stewart, nicknamed "Stew", was an American football coach. He was named interim head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers after Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan in December 2007. After leading the Mountaineers to a 48–28 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl, he was named the school's 32nd head football coach on January 3, 2008. Stewart resigned in the summer of 2011. He was previously the head coach of Virginia Military Institute for three seasons.
Charles Frederick Kitchens Jr. is an American football coach who serves as the offensive coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Kitchens was previously tight ends coach and run game coordinator, and later the interim head coach for the Tar Heels' 2024 bowl game prior to the hiring of Bill Belichick. He has served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and an assistant coach for the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. He has also spent stints as an assistant coach with Mississippi State, North Texas, LSU and Glenville State of the NCAA. He was fired in 2019 after his lone season as a head coach when his Browns team ended with a 6–10 record.

William Hall Napier is an American football coach currently serving as head coach at the University of Florida. From 2017 until 2021, he was head coach at the University of Louisiana, amassing a 40–12 record in four seasons with three consecutive 10+ win seasons and two seasons finishing in the AP Poll, both firsts in the program's history. Ryan Daniel Silverfield is an American football coach. He is the head football coach for the University of Memphis, a position he has held since 2020. Silverfield has spent most of his coaching career, which began during his senior year of high school, as either a line coach or a member of the offensive staff. He was hired at Memphis by then-head coach Mike Norvell prior to the 2016 season. After Norvell's departure to Florida State on December 8, 2019, Silverfield served as the interim head coach before being promoted to head coach on December 28, 2019.
