Roman Stolyar (born December 6, 1967) is a Russian composer, piano improviser and educator.
Born in Novosibirsk, Siberia, in a family of engineers, Stolyar graduated from Novosibirsk College of Music as a jazz pianist and from Novosibirsk State Concervatoire as a composer of contemporary and electronic music.
As an improviser, he has collaborated with Dominic Duval, William Parker, Vinny Golia, Stephen Nachmanovitch, Marco Eneidi, Weasel Walter, Susan Allen, [1] [2] Tanya Kalmanovitch, Oliver Lake, Assif Tsahar, Glen Hall, Thomas Buckner, [3] Martin Kuchen, Ed Sarath, Jin Hi Kim, Ilia Belorukov, [4] Sergey Letov and others.
His music has been released on labels Cadence Jazz, Electroshock Records, [5] SoLyd, Ayler Records, [6] NewFolder2, Creative Sources, Bomba Piter, and Ermatell Records. [7]
Living in Novosibirsk, he was working as an educator at Novosibirsk College of Music and as a music director of Novosibirsk State Theatre "Globe". His book Modern Improvisation: A Practical Guide for Piano was published in Russia in 2010. [8] In 2018 he moved in Saint Petersburg where he worked in Boris Tischenko Music College and continued composing music for theater shows, playing improv concerts and giving lectures and workshops on theory and history of free improvisation.
When Putin's invasion of Ukraine started in 2022, Roman Stolyar expressed his protests against war and growing reperssions in Russia in a number of interviews given to European mass media. [9] He finally left Russia in February 2023 and is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany, collaborating with a number of Berlin-based musicians– Edith Steyer, Meinrad Kneer, Sam Hall, Vincent Laju, Lina Allemano, Anna Kaluza, Johannes von Wrochem and many others. He is also a member of IDENTITIES Quintet [10] which unites improvisers of various nations living in Berlin.
He is a member of the Russian Composers Union and member of the Advisory Council of International Society for Improvised Music. [11]
Free improvisation or free music is improvised music without any general rules, instead following the intuition of its performers. The term can refer to both a technique—employed by any musician in any genre—and as a recognizable genre of experimental music in its own right.
Free jazz or Free Form in the early- to mid-1970s is a style of avant-garde jazz or an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting, and became preoccupied with creating something new. The term "free jazz" was drawn from the 1960 Ornette Coleman recording Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music".
Accompaniment is the musical part which provides the rhythmic and/or harmonic support for the melody or main themes of a song or instrumental piece. There are many different styles and types of accompaniment in different genres and styles of music. In homophonic music, the main accompaniment approach used in popular music, a clear vocal melody is supported by subordinate chords. In popular music and traditional music, the accompaniment parts typically provide the "beat" for the music and outline the chord progression of the song or instrumental piece.
The Terem Quartet is a musical ensemble from Saint Petersburg, Russia. The ensemble, which plays in the Crossover genre, was created in 1986. Having represented St Petersburg in cultural events across the world, the quartet has come to be regarded as a symbol of their native city.

Spiritual Unity is a studio album by American free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. It was recorded on July 10, 1964 in New York City, and features bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray. It was the first album recorded for Bernard Stollman's ESP-Disk label, and it brought Ayler to international attention as it was so "shockingly different". At the same time, it transformed ESP-DISK into "a major source for avant-garde jazz". A 5-star review in AllMusic called it a "landmark recording that's essential to any basic understanding of free jazz", "the album that pushed Albert Ayler to the forefront of jazz's avant-garde... really the first available document of Ayler's music that matched him with a group of truly sympathetic musicians", and stated that "the results are a magnificently pure distillation of his aesthetic."

Sergey Fyodorovich Letov, is a Russian musician and composer, known for his improvisational style. He is the founder of the recording label Pentagram. He has collaborated with numerous jazz, avant-garde, modern classical, rock and electronic music artists, including his younger brother Yegor Letov, composer Sergey Kuryokhin, and cult Soviet art punk band DK. Letov has written music for movies and plays, collaborating with Russian, Italian and Austrian theatres, the German non-profit cultural association Goethe-Institut, and the Moscow Institute of Journalism and Literature.

Konstantin Shamray is a Russian pianist. Shamray was born in Novosibirsk and began musical-schooling at the age of six in the Kemerovo Music School with Natalia Knobloch. From 1996 he continued his studies in Moscow at the Gnessin Special School of Music, later at the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music with Tatiana Zelikman and Vladimir Tropp, and then at Musikhochschule Freiburg with Tibor Szasz.

She performed in a variety genres—classical, experimental music, jazz, and world music. For many years Allen was also Associate Dean of the Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts.
Arkady Shilkloper is a Russian multi-instrumentalist and composer, currently living in Berlin. He is known as one of the best jazz performers on horn and alphorn.
Oleg Borisovich Akkuratov is a Russian pianist, jazz improviser and singer who has amaurosis – complete blindness. He is a virtuoso performer of jazz and classical works and a laureate of the Prize of the President of the Russian Federation for young cultural workers (2019).
Leonid and Friends is a Chicago tribute band based in Moscow. They began as a YouTube band, and now occasionally tour as well. Leonid Vorobyev, is the founder and leader of the band. Vorobyev is a multi-instrumentalist, a recording studio sound engineer and choir conductor by training, at the East Siberian Institute of Culture. Vorobyev made his first Chicago video recording of the song "Brand New Love Affair" in 2014. With former Kyiv Ukraine vocalist, Serge Tiagniryadno, Leonid and Friends' YouTube videos have gone viral, with views in the millions. Leonid & Friends have recorded three Chicago tribute albums, titled Chicagovich. After touring in Russia, the band first toured the United States in 2019. Starting in 2018, songs by Earth, Wind, & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, The Ides of March, Lighthouse and Steely Dan were added to the playlist. In 2022, Chaka Khan's Ain’t Nobody cover with Ksenia Buzina was added to Leonid & Friends tribute. Leonid Vorobyev's son, Roman Vorobyev, is the band’s manager. The band's instrumental setup features bass and lead guitars, drums, keyboards, saxophone, trumpet and trombone, with occasional flugelhorn, French horn, flute, metal clarinet, cello and violin and miscellaneous percussion.
Free Jam is a double-CD live album by trumpeter Mongezi Feza. It was recorded during November and December 1972, and was released in 2004 by Ayler Records. On the album, Feza is accompanied by members of the Bernt Rosengren quartet, featuring Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on saxophone, Torbjörn Hultcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerström on drums. The group is also joined by percussionist Okay Temiz.
