The Rome Street Circuit was a proposed motorsport circuit, to be on the streets of Rome. An initial agreement to host Formula One races starting in 2012 was announced in December 2009, [1] but after a lack of support from residents and no agreement to share the Italian Grand Prix with Monza, the project was abandoned in early 2011. [2]

Layout

The proposed layout depicted a track in the southern outskirts of the city, [3] in the Esposizione Universale Roma area, an area built by Benito Mussolini to host the World Expo in 1942, before it was cancelled by the outbreak of World War II. [4] Bernie Ecclestone said that the track could have had a close proximity to the Vatican, joking that, "every time there is an overtaking manoeuvre, we’re going to put the black smoke up." [1]

The proposed circuit ran over roads near Tre Fontane Abbey, using a route that partially followed the circuit used for the Rome Grand Prix between 1928 and 1930.

History

The history of this project can be traced back to 1984, when the idea was first floated by former Formula Two driver and World Superbike promoter Maurizio Flammini, who then revived the idea in January 2009. [5] Flammini, now the course planner, then gained the support of mayor Gianni Alemanno. Alemanno said that the race would bring €1 billion to the city, and would be a part of the a plan to renew the city's tourist appeal into the future. [6] However, Luca di Montezemolo, president of Ferrari, suggested the idea was unthinkable, and it should only be a one-off event, due to the large number of world-class permanent circuits in Italy, citing Monza, Imola, Mugello, Misano and Vallelunga as examples. [4] In May 2009, Rome launched their plans, beginning a Roma Formula Futuro campaign. [7]

Legacy

In 2018 a street circuit in the EUR district, known as the Circuto Cittadino dell'EUR, hosted the inaugural Rome ePrix for Formula E. [8]

During these years, the European Grand Prix was held in a country that hosted its own national Grand Prix at a different point in the same season, at a different circuit. The race returned as a one-off in 2016, being held on a street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Bahrain Grand Prix, officially known as the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix for sponsorship reasons, is a Formula One motor racing event in Bahrain. The first race took place at the Bahrain International Circuit on 4 April 2004. It made history as the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Middle East, and was given the award for the "Best Organised Grand Prix" by the FIA. The race has in the past been the second, third, or fourth race of the Formula One calendar. However, in the 2006 season, Bahrain swapped places with the traditional season opener, the Australian Grand Prix, which was pushed back to avoid a clash with the Commonwealth Games. Bahrain staged the opening race of the 2010 season and the cars drove the full 6.299 km (3.914 mi) "Endurance Circuit" to celebrate F1's 'diamond jubilee'. In 2021, the Bahrain Grand Prix was the season opener again because the 2021 Australian Grand Prix was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Italian Grand Prix</span> Formula One Grand Prix

The Italian Grand Prix is the fifth oldest national motor racing Grand Prix, having been held since 1921. Since 2013, it has been the Grand Prix held the most times, with 93 editions as of 2023. It is one of the two Grands Prix which has run as an event of the Formula One World Championship Grands Prix every season, continuously since the championship was introduced in 1950. Every Formula One Italian Grand Prix in the World Championship era has been held at Monza except in 1980, when it was held at Imola.

The Imola Circuit, officially called the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, is a 4.909 km (3.050 mi) motor racing circuit. The Valencia Street Circuit was a street circuit in Valencia, Spain which hosted the Formula One European Grand Prix for five years (2008–2012). The first Formula One race meeting on the circuit was held over the 23–24 August 2008 weekend, with Felipe Massa winning the main event, the European Grand Prix, after starting from pole position. The circuit used the roads skirting the city's harbour and America's Cup port area – including a section over a 140-metre-long (460 ft) swing bridge – and also included some roads designed exclusively for racing purposes by the German architect Hermann Tilke, who also designed the infrastructure buildings for the circuit. The 2012 edition took place on 24 June and was the last to go under the name of the European Grand Prix until 2016, when the Baku City Circuit used the title for one year. The circuit has been left abandoned after a deal fell through to alternate this venue with Catalunya in Barcelona to host the Spanish Grand Prix.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Baku City Circuit</span> Motor racing circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Baku City Circuit is a motor racing street circuit located in Baku, Azerbaijan constructed near Baku Boulevard. A lap of the circuit is 6.003 km (3.730 mi), making it the fourth-longest circuit on the Formula One calendar. The inaugural Formula One race at the circuit was the 2016 European Grand Prix and its support events. A year later, in 2017, the circuit held the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The event is organised by Baku City Circuit Operation Company.
