Ronald "Ron" Frank Paley OM (born November 20, 1950) [1] is a Canadian composer, arranger, pianist, electric bassist, and big-band leader based in Winnipeg. [2]
Paley earned his B.Mus. at the University of Manitoba in 1972, studying piano under William Aide; he also studied under Ray Santisi at Berklee College of Music (1972–73), and privately in New York under Richie Beirach (piano), Bob Brookmeyer (composition, 1989–90), and others. [1] Paley toured internationally from 1973 to 1975 as the electric bassist in turn with the Buddy Rich big band, and the Woody Herman big band. [1] He recorded three albums with the latter band, including an album ("The Main Event" [3] ) with Frank Sinatra. [2]
Upon his return to Winnipeg, Paley rose to prominence on the local music scene as a composer, arranger, and leader of both big bands and small ensembles. [1] He is a perennial act at the Jazz Winnipeg festival (either with the Ron Paley Big Band, or in small ensembles), [4] has performed in concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra [5] & the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, [6] and has performed a concert of new music sponsored by Winnipeg's new music concert organization “Groundswell”. [5] In 2014, Ron Paley was presented with the BreakOut West "Heritage Award" [7] —an honor bestowed upon an artist with "a demonstrated, outstanding body of work over a long period of time -- a real icon in the community". [8]
The Ron Paley Big Band was formed in 1976, [2] and has since performed numerous jazz concerts and dances, appeared at Expo 86 as part of a western Canadian tour, and traveled widely in Manitoba. [1] The small ensemble performed at the 1987 Montreal International Jazz Festival. [1] [9]
Paley was also the musical director for the University of Manitoba stage band from 1976 to 1986, and filled the same role for two local TV shows, CKND's 'Friday Night Live' (1987), and CBC's 'Jerry and Ziz' (1979). [1]
His composition credits include two works for big band with symphony orchestra (We've Got It, 1979; Sound Cells, 1987), and two works for jazz trio with symphony orchestra (Rhythm Changes, 1978; Rhythm and Blues, 1987). These four works were premiered by Paley with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. [1] He also has written more that 25 pieces for big band alone (including the extended Interior Alternatives, 1989), as well as several third-stream items, notably Happiness Is a String Quartet Playing the Blues (1977), Saxophone Quintet (1981), and Shades of Jazz (1981). [1] A number of his works were premiered at concerts sponsored by the Manitoba Composers Association, of which Paley is a member. [1]
Paley was commissioned by the Royal Canadian College of Organists in 2002 to compose a work for choir and organ based upon the text of Psalm 122. [5] He was thereafter commissioned by the National Arts Centre to write a fanfare for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the occasion of the Royal Visit. [5] In 2004, his big band toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, performing jazz arrangements of Rodgers and Hart tunes for “A Cinderella Story”. Paley received a 2007 commission from the Winnipeg Singers for a choral work based on the text of three Shakespearean sonnets. [5]
Paley was appointed as a member of the Order of Manitoba in 2024. [10]
Winnipeg Free Press jazz writer Chris Smith notes that "any number of longtime local musicians have performed in Paley's orchestra over the years, and many still do. Daugherty has been described by The Times (London) as "a master icon maker" with a "maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear."
In Canada, classical music includes a range of musical styles rooted in the traditions of Western or European classical music that European settlers brought to the country from the 17th century and onwards. As well, it includes musical styles brought by other ethnic communities from the 19th century and onwards, such as Indian classical music and Chinese classical music. Since Canada's emergence as a nation in 1867, the country has produced its own composers, musicians and ensembles. As well, it has developed a music infrastructure that includes training institutions, conservatories, performance halls, and a public radio broadcaster, CBC, which programs a moderate amount of Classical music. There is a high level of public interest in classical music and education.
Ron Collier, was a Canadian jazz trombonist, composer, and arranger. He performed in and led a number of jazz groups, and created orchestrations for and recorded with Duke Ellington.

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO) is a chamber orchestra based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It offers an annual subscription series at Westminster United Church, which regularly features Canada's leading soloists, such as James Ehnes and Measha Brueggergosman, and Marc-André Hamelin. Other core MCO activities include recording, touring, and engaging extensive outreach in remote communities in northern Manitoba. Currently, Anne Manson serves as the MCO's Music Director, Karl Stobbe as its Concertmaster, and Vicki Young as its managing director.
Timothy Wesley John Brady is a Canadian composer, electric guitarist, improvising musician, concert producer, record producer and cultural activist. Working in the field of contemporary classical music, experimental music, and musique actuelle, his compositions utilize a variety of styles from serialism to minimalism and often incorporate modern instruments such as electric guitars and other electroacoustic instruments. His music is marked by a synthesis of musical languages, having developed an ability to use elements of many musical styles while retaining a strong sense of personal expression. Some of his early recognized works are the 1982 orchestral pieces Variants and Visions, his Chamber Concerto (1985), the chamber trio ...in the Wake..., and his song cycle Revolutionary Songs (1994).

Phil Dwyer is a Canadian jazz saxophonist, pianist, composer, producer and educator. In 2017 he graduated from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Faculty of Law in Fredericton, New Brunswick and was called to the bar of British Columbia in 2018. Dwyer is Member of the Order of Canada, having been invested in 2013 "For his contributions to jazz as a performer, composer and producer, and for increasing access to music education in his community." Dwyer has been nominated for Juno Awards six times and won Best Mainstream Jazz Album in 1994 with Dave Young for Fables and Dreams and Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year in 2012 for the recording Changing Seasons. Dwyer has also appeared on Juno Award winning recordings with Hugh Fraser (1988), Joe Sealy (1997), Natalie MacMaster (2000), Guido Basso (2004), Don Thompson (2006), Molly Johnson (2009), Terry Clarke (2010), and Diana Panton (2015). He is an alumnus and Honorary Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music.
Frank Squire Welsman was a Canadian conductor, pianist, composer and music educator. He began his career as a concert pianist, but ultimately earned his place in Canadian history for establishing Toronto's first symphony orchestra of any standing, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra which was active from 1906 to 1918. As a composer he wrote a few songs and some instrumental pieces, mostly works for solo piano. His grandson John Welsman is a notable film score composer and his granddaughter Carol Welsman is a successful jazz pianist and singer.
Neil Chotem was a Canadian composer, arranger, conductor, pianist, and music educator.
Fred Stone was a Canadian flugelhornist, trumpeter, pianist, composer, writer, and music educator. He worked as a soloist within both the classical and jazz repertoires from the 1950s through the early 1970s, appearing in concerts with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the San Diego Symphony. Between 1971 and 1983, he mainly focused on his work as a composer and teacher, making only periodic public performances, and often with ensembles composed largely of his students. In 1984, he formed "Freddie's Band", a jazz ensemble in residence at The Music Gallery in Toronto. He performed with this group up until his death two years later.
Norman Alec Symonds was a Canadian composer, clarinetist, and saxophonist who lived and worked in Toronto, Ontario. A leading figure in the third-stream movement in Canada, he composed several jazz works which employed classical forms.
Earl MacDonald is a Canadian pianist, composer, arranger, conductor, recording artist, and educator specializing in jazz. Described as "a magical, musical alchemist of hip hybrids", MacDonald's compositional work frequently draws upon other musical styles, fusing them with jazz. The Winnipeg native has been employed as director of jazz studies at the University of Connecticut since the fall of 2000.

Michael Matthews, born August 28, 1950, in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, is a composer and photographer. Matthews completed a Ph.D. in composition at North Texas State University in 1985. Matthews is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and works in Berlin.
Scott Routenberg is an American composer, jazz pianist, arranger and orchestrator. Currently Associate Professor of Jazz Piano at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, he has published both full-length compositions for jazz ensembles and several studio albums. His 2003, 2006, and 2020 releases "explore jazz-influenced electro-acoustic hybrids." He has won a number of songwriting contests, including the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Maxell Song of the Year in 2004 for his song "Bandwidth", which also won the JLSC's Grand Prize in the Jazz Category.
Marta Iren Hidy was a Hungarian Canadian violinist, conductor and music teacher. In addition to being an accomplished musician, she was a founding member of the music program at McMaster University.
Jaelem Bhate is a Canadian conductor, composer, and bandleader from Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of British Columbia in 2019 under the guidance of Dr. Jonathan Girard. He previously received his undergraduate degree in percussion performance at UBC where he graduated first in his class and received the prestigious Wesbrook Award for academic achievement and leadership. He has also studied with Cristian Măcelaru, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Marin Alsop, Boris Brott, Gerard Schwarz, and Fred Stride.
