Rosedale is an unincorporated community in Marion County, Oregon [1] just south of Salem in the Salem Hills. Rosedale was named after the wild roses that surrounded the area and the pleasing little dale near the old highway. [2] The Rosedale area was a major prune growing region in the early 20th century but is now primarily made up of rural residential properties, vineyards and Christmas tree fields. The town is now what remains from the mid 1900s and is no longer as established as it once was or will ever be.
In an article published by the Evening Capital Journal on May 18, 1891, it was announced that Rosedale would become the new addition to the capitol city and would be on the market on May 25. Properties were put up for sale by the All Real Estate Men and people were urged to visit. Rosedale was claimed to be the very center of a prosperous and beautiful portion of Salem in the near future which, as properties sold and the community grew, it did until the early 1920s.
The Rosedale Friends Church is one of the last surviving remnants from this old city and perhaps the most significant. Founded in 1896, the church is still operating today and is located at 452 Hylo Road. On the opposite side of the church is the Cammack Family Farm. The date in which it was founded is unknown, but it is older than the establishment of Rosedale and the Friends Church. At the intersection of Delaney and Sunnyside Road, there was a grocery store which is now privately owned and no longer in service. Right next to it was a feed, seed, and livery stable which is also out of service. Somewhere near here there was also a gas station and in the Northwest corner there is the Sunnyside School which is now the Marantha Christian Fellowship Church.
On January 6, 1898, two masked men broke into Peter Magnes's Rosedale home and brutally assaulted Magnes and his wife in an attempt to rob them before they were fought off by some neighbors. Magnes was left with three deep gashes on his head inflicted with a revolver used as a club. Mrs. Magnes was nearly killed in the incident from the numerous wounds on her face and body inflicted by the men who beat her into insensibility. The robbers' goal was to blow open Mr. Magnes's safe which it was thought he kept large sums of money. [3]
