The Rotter Nemere or just Nemere was a Hungarian high performance, single seat sailplane designed and built for the 1936 ISTUS gliding demonstration held in 1936 alongside the Berlin Olympic Games.
The ISTUS international soaring demonstration was held at the same time and in the same place as the 1936 Olympics to make the case for gliding's inclusion as an Olympic discipline at later Games. The proposition was accepted and there would have been gliding events at the 1940 Olympics had not World War II intervened. [1] Rotter, using his experience of designing the successful Karakán, was responsible for both designing and flying the Nemere, Hungary's representative. [2]
The Nemere's progression from the Karakán was most evident in the wing and its mounting. The modified pedestal mounting to the fuselage had gone and instead the Nemere had a shoulder wing mounted on a 1,150 mm (45.3 in) span centre section built as part of the fuselage. The wing was a cantilever structure, without the earlier lift struts, continuously tapered in plan from root to tip with no externally distinct centre section [2] and with 2° of dihedral. [3] There was continuous taper in wing section also; Rotter returned to Göttingen airfoils using Gö 646 with a thickness to chord of 19% at the root, varying through Gö 535 to a thinner, less cambered, tip. [2] Like the Karakán, the Nemere had a plywood covered D-box ahead of the main spar but, with the external struts absent, plywood covered more of the inner wing back to a diagonal internal drag strut. The wings were fabric covered aft. Broad chord ailerons occupied the outer 60% of the wings, which ended in elliptical tips. [2]
The fuselage was a ply-covered semi-monocoque, teardrop shaped in cross-section, which tapered markedly behind the wing. The canopy was a wood framed multi-transparency unit, similar to that on the Karakán, but with more panels, which preserved the contours of the upper forward fuselage back almost to the wing leading edge. The tail was conventional, with an all-moving tailplane, mostly fabric covered. The rudder, mounted on a short, narrow fin, was balanced, rounded and full. The Nemere took off from a small, two wheeled dolly and landed on a long skid under the forward fuselage, assisted by s steel tailskid at the rear. [2]
The Nemere flew for the first time on 25 July 1936 [3] only a few days before the demonstrations held at Berlin-Staaken airfield on 4 August. [4] Sailplanes from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Yugoslavia flew alongside the Nemere. A week later, starting from Rangsdorf some 24 km (15 mi) south of Berlin, Rotter made a flight to Kiel where the sailing events of the Games were based. He had nominated his objective the day before and covered the 326.5 km (202.9 mi) in 3 hrs 53 min. It was the longest glider flight in Europe in 1936 and won Rotter an ISTUS Gold medal. [2] [3]
On 13 June 1937 the Nemere was damaged in a bungee-cord launch and was rebuilt with Göppingen airbrakes, the aileron joint adjusting lever, previously behind the pilot's head, moved under the instrument panel [3] and the rear canopy oval side-opening replaced with a rectangular aperture. [2]
The Nemere continued in use until at least 1943, mostly slope soaring near its base at Toros, west of Budapest A few long-distance cross-country flights were made, including one of 230 km (143 mi) from Hármashatár-hegy in Budapest to Ciucea in west Romania, though no more records were set. Later in World War II it was slightly damaged but was restored to flying condition. In 1948 it was ordered by political leaders to be burned and its metal parts to be melted. All design documents of known location were destroyed. The fate of the aircraft obviously could neither be included in the book about Hungarian sailplanes [3] because of censorship, nor to be spoken out publicly until 1990.

The Slingsby T.43 Skylark 3 was a single seat Open Class sailplane developed from the Skylark 2 with an extended wingspan. It won the 1960 World Gliding Championships.
The Akaflieg Darmstadt D-7 Margarete, often shortened to Darmstadt D-7 Margarete, was one of the earliest two seat monoplane gliders, designed and built by German university students in 1923.

The Maeda 703 was one of the first indigenous Japanese gliders, a high performance single seat aircraft which first flew in 1940. Three were built, two with gull wing wings; one of these set a national endurance record in 1941.
The DFS Reiher was a single seat competition glider designed in Germany by Hans Jacobs and first flown in 1937. The type won the last two German Rhön gliding championships before the start of World War II. Six were factory produced.
The Schleicher Rhönadler, DFS Rhönadler or Jacobs Rhönadler is a high performance, single seat competition sailplane built in Germany in the 1930s. More than 65 were built.
The Lippisch Wien was a high-performance glider designed by Alexander Lippisch in Germany in 1929. Owned and flown by Robert Kronfeld, it was one of the first sailplanes intended to exploit thermals. It set world records both for distance and altitude and demonstrated the practicality of long-distance cross-country flights.
The Teichfuss Orione was an Italian high performance single seat glider, designed by Luigi Teichfuss. It made a six-hour record flight and also flew as the Italian representative at the 1936 Olympics.
The Teichfuss Sparviero was an Italian single seat aerobatic glider, designed by Luigi Teichfuss and flown in 1938.
The RRG Fafnir, named after the legendary dragon, was a single seat German high performance glider designed by Alexander Lippisch. It won the Rhön competition in 1931 and made several outstanding flights as well as setting a fashion for gull wings.
The Scheibe SF-30 Club-Spatz is a 15 m class single seat sailplane built in Germany in the 1970s and intended for club use.
The IIL IS-4 was a single seat, high performance sailplane designed by Iosif Șilimon and built in Romania in the late 1950s.
The Oberlerchner Mg 19 Steinadler is an Erwin Musger designed two seat tandem trainer glider built in Austria and first flown in 1951. Several examples of this successful aircraft, which competed in the two seat class at two World Gliding Championships in the 1950s, were still flying in 2000.
The Musger Mg 9 was a tandem two seat glider built in Austria in the mid-1930s. It broke both world and national records.
The Rotter Karakán or just the Karakán was a high performance Hungarian single seat sailplane. Two were built and set many national gliding records in the years before World War II.
The Vándor (Wanderer) was a 1930s Hungarian single seat glider intended to ready students who had qualified on primary gliders for contemporary soaring and aerobatic aircraft. Only one was built.
The Avia 41-P was a high performance French glider. Eric Nessler set many new national gliding records in one between 1934 and 1938.
The ITS-IVB was a 1930s Polish two seat research sailplane designed to gather meteorological and airframe stress data. The sole example remained in service up to outbreak of World War II.
The Jancsó-Szokolay M22 was a Hungarian single-seat sailplane first flown in 1937. Twenty were built and the type set several national records. Some remained in service up to about 1953.
