Mary Kathryn"Heidi" Heitkamp is an American politician who served as a United States senator from North Dakota from 2013 to 2019. A member of the North Dakota Democratic–Nonpartisan League Party,she was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from North Dakota. Heitkamp served as the 28th North Dakota attorney general from 1992 to 2000 and 20th North Dakota tax commissioner from 1986 to 1992. As of 2023,she is the last Democrat to have represented North Dakota in Congress,and the last to hold statewide office.

Voter suppression in the United States consists of various legal and illegal efforts to prevent eligible citizens from exercising their right to vote. Such voter suppression efforts vary by state,local government,precinct,and election. Voter suppression has historically been used for racial,economic,gender,age and disability discrimination. After the American Civil War,all African-American men were granted voting rights,but poll taxes or language tests were used to limit and suppress the ability to register or cast a ballot. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 improved voting access significantly.
North Dakota held two statewide elections in 2016:a primary election on Tuesday,June 14,and a general election on Tuesday,November 8. In addition,each township elected officers on Tuesday,March 15,and each school district selected a date between April 1 and June 30 to hold their elections. This would have been the first election since the state legislature revoked the ability to use a student or military ID to satisfy state ID voting requirements,but a court ruling in August struck the down the provision,and the election was held under the 2013 rules.

On October 3,2018,Senator Tom Udall,vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs,introduced the Native American Voting Rights Act of 2018 with 13 co-sponsors. An identical bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Ben Ray Luján. The legislation sought to ensure equal voting access to Native Americans through several measures:
- Established a Native American Voting Rights Task Force which would fund tribal-state consortiums to bolster Native American voter registration and participation among tribal communities,
- Cited the Shelby County ruling and prohibited states from "undertaking discriminatory actions without Department of Justice agreement,"
- Included provisions to increase Native access to voter registration sites and polling locations,and
- Allowed tribal ID cards to be used as ID for voting purposes.

Linda Duba is an American politician and educator based in Sioux Falls,South Dakota. She serves in the South Dakota lower house as one of the Democratic representatives of the 15th District along with Jamie Smith. Her district covers the northern part of Sioux Falls including the Downtown,Whittier,Cathedral,Terrace park,West 10th Street,and Garfield neighborhoods. The 15th District lies completely within Minnehaha county. Duba succeeded Representative Karen Soli in 2019.
