An accountant is a practitioner of accounting or accountancy. Accountants who have demonstrated competency through their professional associations' certification exams are certified to use titles such as Chartered Accountant, Chartered Certified Accountant or Certified Public Accountant, or Registered Public Accountant. Such professionals are granted certain responsibilities by statute, such as the ability to certify an organization's financial statements, and may be held liable for professional misconduct. Non-qualified accountants may be employed by a qualified accountant, or may work independently without statutory privileges and obligations.
A financial audit is conducted to provide an opinion whether "financial statements" are stated in accordance with specified criteria. Normally, the criteria are international accounting standards, although auditors may conduct audits of financial statements prepared using the cash basis or some other basis of accounting appropriate for the organization. In providing an opinion whether financial statements are fairly stated in accordance with accounting standards, the auditor gathers evidence to determine whether the statements contain material errors or other misstatements.
Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional accounting body, initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation; the certified public accountant designation is generally equivalent to it. Women were able to become chartered accountants only following the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 after which, in 1920, Mary Harris Smith was recognised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and became the first woman chartered accountant in the world.
Founded in 1904, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants(ACCA) is the global professional accounting body offering the Chartered Certified Accountant qualification (ACCA). It has 240,952 members and 541,930 future members worldwide. ACCA's headquarters are in London with principal administrative office in Glasgow. ACCA works through a network of over 110 offices and centres in 51 countries - with 346 Approved Learning Partners (ALP) and more than 7,600 Approved Employers worldwide, who provide employee development.
The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is a quasi-government agency responsible for the collection, safekeeping, responsible investment, and distribution of retirement funds from employees of the private sector in Uganda who are not covered by the Government Retirement Scheme. Participation for both employers and employees is compulsory. The Uganda National Social Security Fund is the largest pension fund in the countries of the East African Community, with assets of USh15.5 trillion, as of June 2021.

Samuel Kisakye Sejjaaka is a Ugandan accountant, academic and businessman. He is Principal and Country Team Leader at MAT ABACUS Business School. Between 1993 and 2014, he lectured at Uganda's oldest tertiary institution, Makerere University and rose to the position of Deputy Principal. In December 2014, he retired from the institution at age 50. He then helped establish Abacus Business School, Uganda's premier executive education institution. In 2019, Abacus Business school merged with the Management Accountancy Training Company (MAT) to form MAT ABACUS Business School.

Selestino Babungi is an accountant and corporate executive in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of Umeme, whose shares are traded on both the Uganda Securities Exchange and the Nairobi Stock Exchange, and is the largest independent power distribution company in Uganda. He was appointed in March 2015, and he assumed his current position on 1 April 2015, replacing Charles Chapman, whose term ended.

She is the financial director at Baylor Foundation Uganda, a non-government organisation that focuses on improving pediatric health through monitoring, nutrition, prevention and treatment of childhood diseases in Uganda. Baylor Foundation Uganda is affiliated with Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.
Peace Masozera Uwase, also Peace Uwase, is a Rwandan accountant and bank executive, who serves as the Director General of the Financial Stability department of the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), since April 2016.
Agnes Nalwanga, is a Ugandan businesswoman, management professional and corporate executive, who serves as the Head of Consumer Services at Umeme Limited, the largest electricity distribution company in Uganda. She is a member of the company's Senior Management Team.
Karen Njeri Kandie,, but commonly known as Karen Kandie, is a Kenyan accountant and business executive, who serves as Director, Parastatal Reforms(Financial) at the Kenya National Treasury. Prior to this, she was the chief executive officer of IDB Capital Limited, a division of the Kenya Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Justine Nakagiri Ssemwanga,, is a Ugandan accountant, auditor and corporate executive, who served as the Head of Internal Audit at Umeme Limited, the largest distributor of electric power in Uganda, for the one year ending in June 2018.
Mumba Kalifungwa, is a Zambian accountant and corporate executive, who is the managing director and chief executive officer of Absa Bank Uganda Limited, a commercial bank in Uganda, whose assets were valued at US$665 million in December 2017. He took up this assignment on 1 April 2020.
Anne Muraya is a Kenyan accountant, businesswoman, and corporate executive who was appointed as the chief executive officer of Deloitte East Africa, effective 1 June 2022. Up until then, she served as the Africa Managing Partner for Responsible Business and Public Policy at Deloitte. She concurrently worked as the audit leader for East Africa. In her new position, Muraya oversees the company's business in eight countries, namely: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. She is the first female executive to serve in that position, in the history of the firm.
