Ruth Humbel (born 23 July 1957) is a Swiss politician (CVP) who was a member of the Federal Assembly from 2003 to 2023. [1] She is also an orienteering competitor at international level. She won bronze medals in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships in 1978, [2] 1981 [3] and 1985. [4] She placed fourth in the individual event at the 1981 World Championships, and fifth in the relay in 1979. [5]
Humbel lives in the municipality of Birmenstorf in the canton Aargau in Switzerland. [1] She is married to historian Beat Näf, and has two children, born in 1991 and 1994. [6]
Humbel was five times individual Swiss Champion in Orienteering. She was part of the Swiss national team from 1975 to 1987, and competed in seven World Orienteering Championships. [6]
At the 1976 World Orienteering Championships in Aviemore she placed 19th in the classic distance. [7] The 1978 World Championships were held in Kongsberg, Norway. Humbel started both in the individual competition, where she placed 13th, and in the relay. The Swiss team earned a bronze medal, behind Finland and Sweden, in a close finish two seconds ahead of the Norway team. Also on the Swiss team were Ruth Baumberger and Hanni Fries. [2] In Tampere in 1979 she placed 25th in the individual competition, and fifth with the Swiss team, which consisted of Annelies Meier, Humbel and Fries. [5] In 1981 the World Championships were held in Thun, in her home country. Humbel achieved her best individual result, placing fourth. In the relay Switzerland won the bronze medal, behind Sweden and Finland. On the Swiss team were Ruth Schmid, Annelies Meier Irene Bucher and Humbel. [3] In Zalaegerszeg in 1983 she placed 31st in the individual course, and fifth in the relay. [8] In Bendigo in 1985 she placed 28th in the individual course, and the Swiss team won a bronze medal in the relay. [4] Her last appearance at the World Orienteering Championships was in Gerardmer in 1987. She placed 18th in the individual competition, and sixth in the relay. [9]
Humbel was a member (German : Grossrätin) of the Aargau Parliament (German : Kantonsparlament) from 1981 to 2003. In 2003 she was elected to the National Council of Switzerland, and reelected in 2007 and later, serving as delegate until 2023. She represented the canton Aargau, and the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland. In the parliament she was a member of the Health Commission (German : Kommission für soziale Sicherheit und Gesundheit NR) and the Staatspolitische Kommission NR, and a former member of the Commission of Justice (German : Gerichtskommission). Øyvin Thon is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, and has seven gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships.
Åge Hadler is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, winner of the 1966 and 1972 individual World Orienteering Championships, relay champion from 1970, and individual bronze medalist from 1968.
Ingrid Hadler is a former orienteering competitor and cross-country skier from Norway. She is individual world champion in orienteering, as well as relay champion.
Ragnhild Bratberg is a Norwegian orienteering competitor and a cross-country skier. In orienteering, she won the overall Orienteering World Cup in 1988, and represented Norway several times in the World Orienteering Championships relays, winning medals in 1985, 1987 and 1991. In ski orienteering she won four individual gold medals at the World Ski Orienteering Championships, and once in the relay. She was awarded Egebergs Ærespris in 1988.
Lars Lönnkvist is a Swedish orienteering competitor. He is Relay World Champion from 1979, as a member of the Swedish winning team, along with Rolf Pettersson, Kjell Lauri, and Bjorn Rosendahl. He also won silver medals in the 1978 and 1981 relays, and a bronze medal in 1983 and 1987. He placed fifth in the individual contest in the 1979 World Championships, and fourth in 1981. He won the Jukola relay in 1980 and 1982.
Sinikka Kukkonen was a Finnish orienteering competitor. She is World Champion in both orienteering and ski orienteering. She became the first World Champion in ski orienteering, in 1975.
Magne Dæhli is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, ski-orienteer, and cross-country skier. His achievements include five medals in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships, of which three are gold medals. His best individual performances include a silver medal in the long distance from the European Orienteering Championships, and a bronze medal in the middle distance from the 2019 World Orienteering Championships.
Wenche Jacobsen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed internationally. Her achievements included winning a bronze medal at the world championships in 1978, and she was part of the Norwegian relay team at the world championships in 1976 and 1978, both times placing fourth.

She participated on the Swiss team at the 1976 World Championships in Aviemore, where they placed sixth in the relay. At the World Championships in Kongsberg in 1978 she placed seventh in the individual course, and won a bronze medal in the relay, together with Ruth Humbel and Hanni Fries.
Hanni Fries is a Swiss orienteering competitor who won a bronze medal in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships in Kongsberg in 1978, together with Ruth Baumberger and Ruth Humbel.
Christine Schaffner is a Swiss mountain bike orienteer and world champion. She has participated in all seven World MTB Orienteering Championships from 2004 to 2010, and won gold medals in the long distance four times, in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Willi Müller is a Swiss orienteering competitor who participated in five World Orienteering Championships in the 1970s and 1980s. He won a bronze medal with the Swiss relay team at the 1985 World Orienteering Championships.
Martin Howald is a Swiss orienteering competitor. He participated at the 1985 World Orienteering Championships in Bendigo, where he won a bronze medal in the team relay, together with Willi Müller, Urs Flühmann and Alain Gafner. At the 1981 World Orienteering Championships he placed 9th in the individual contest, and fifth with the Swiss relay team.
Brigitte Zürcher is a Swiss orienteering competitor at international level. At the World Orienteering Championships in Zalaegerszeg in 1983 she placed fifth with the Swiss relay team. She won a bronze medal in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships in Bendigo in 1985.
Frauke Sonderegger is a Swiss orienteer. At the 1983 World Orienteering Championships in Zalaegerszeg she placed twelfth in the individual contest and fifth with the Swiss relay team. She won a relay bronze medal at the 1985 games in Bendigo.
Ida Bobach is a Danish orienteering competitor who was Junior World Champion in 2009, and became triple Junior World Champion from 2010, when she won the sprint, long distance and the relay. She represents the club OK Pan Århus, and since 2007, has received training from Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. In 2015 she won gold medals at the World Championships in the long and Relay.
