Edwin Ruyonga, known by the mononym Ruyonga is a Ugandan hip hop and spoken-word musical artist based in the United States. [1] Ruyonga was one of the pioneering hip-hop acts in Uganda, with his first group winning a nationwide music competition in 2000.

Rawkus Records selected Ruyonga as one of the top 50 artists on the internet, and Rawkus helped release his second solo album, AFRiCAN, in 2007. [2] Ruyonga has recorded songs with many artists including Brother Ali and Slug of Atmosphere, and has shared the stage with Lupe Fiasco, K’Naan, Wu Tang Clan, Grieves and Budo (Rhymesayers) and The Roots.

Ruyonga is married to Sheila Yvonne Agaba with whom he has a daughter. [3] [4] [5] [6] In 2013, he was on DSTV's list African MC's: In a League of their own. [7] He has collaborated with fellow Ugandan rappers like The mith, Bigtril, and Zex Bilangilangi. He is also credited for delivering the finest verses in Ugandan cyphers, notably Vuqa cypher.[ citation needed ]

Music

Ruyonga is a gospel rapper who has been based in the United States since 2002. He has worked with artists like JGivens, Magg 44, Enygma, Benezeri, Big Tril, Maurice Kirya, Zex Bilangilangi, Rickman Manrick, Ykee Benda, and Don MC. [8] Ruyonga was previously known as Krukid, member of the hip-hop trio A.R.M. (African Rebel Movement/Artists Representing the Motherland), which also included M.anifest (Ghana) and Budo.

He was included in the 2007 Rawkus 50, a list compiled by Rawkus Records of 50 notable hip hop artists. [9] [10] He recorded the soundtrack for Nana Kagga's 2012 film, The Life. In 2022, he teamed up with rising Stars 1 Der Jr and Zex Bilangilangi and did a hip-hop banger Parte Yaani.

The song was produced by Hit-Boy, and features additional verses from fellow American rappers Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and Big K.R.I.T. The song is a posse cut created to feel like an "original '90s underground track." I-Am Enygma, better known by his stage name Enygma, is a Ugandan rapper, record producer, executive producer and entrepreneur known for his wordplay laced rhymes and always wearing a mask on his face so as to conceal his identity. He rose to fame in December 2010 following the runaway success of his single, Hustler's Night featuring The mith, Keko and Navio. This was followed up by even more celebrated hits in 2011, namely F.U.M.E.M.E. and Ten Reasons. He also represents one third of occasional rap group Klarity alongside The Mith and Lyrikal Proof. Also frequently collaborates with other artists such as Ruyonga, Maurice Kirya and Lyrical G. As an entrepreneur, Enygma conducts private business, mostly outside of the entertainment industry.

Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Flex D'Paper was part of the 2014 UG Cypher including the finest Ugandan rappers: Navio, Keko, Big Tril, Don MC, AirporTaxi rappers St. Nelly Sade, GNL Zamba, DJ Global, JB, The Mith, Ruyonga, and Atlas.

Sheebah Karungi, professional also known as Queen Karma and Sheebah, is a Ugandan musician, dancer, actress and feminist activist. She debuted her acting career in Queen of Katwe as Shakira. After quitting Obsessions, a dance group she joined in 2006, she started making music and later rose to recognition upon the release of her hit single "Ice Cream". In 2014, she released her debut project Ice Cream, a five-track EP which did well commercially and led her to win back-to-back HiPipo Music Awards Best Female Artist in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. She also won the Artist of the Year award twice, in 2017, 2018, and 2019 at the HiPipo Music Awards. In 2024, she was appointed vice president of the Uganda National Musician Federation assisting Eddy Kenzo who is the president of the federation.
