S.W.A.T. is an American procedural action drama television series, based on the 1975 television series and 2003 film of the same name. Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan developed the new series, [1] which premiered on CBS on November 2, 2017, [2] and is produced by Original Film, CBS Studios and Sony Pictures Television. In April 2022, the series was renewed for a sixth season which premiered on October 7, 2022. [3] [4] In May 2023, the series was canceled after six seasons at CBS, [5] [6] only to be renewed for a seventh and final season at CBS a few days later. [7] The seventh season premiered on February 16, 2024. [8] In April 2024, the final season decision was reversed and the show was renewed for an eighth season. [9]

Contents

The show exists in a shared universe with the FX crime drama The Shield , which Ryan also created. [10]

Premise

The series centers on Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. A lifelong Los Angeles local and former Marine, Hondo has been tapped to lead a new "last stop" Special Weapons and Tactics unit of the LAPD. Because he is both black and L.A. born and raised, Hondo feels deeply loyal not only to his "brothers in blue" but also to the people they serve.

Production

Development

On February 3, 2017, it was announced that CBS had greenlit production of a pilot episode of a television series inspired by the 2003 film adaptation of the 1970s ABC series S.W.A.T. . [19] The pilot was written by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan [1] and directed by Justin Lin.

The new series was ordered by CBS on May 12, 2017. Co-creators and executive producers Thomas and Ryan would serve as the showrunners. [20] The series premiered on November 2, 2017. [21] On November 17, 2017, CBS picked up the series for a full season of 20 episodes [22] and on December 1, 2017, CBS ordered two additional episodes for the first season bringing the total to 22 episodes. [23] On March 27, 2018, CBS renewed the series for a second season [24] which premiered on September 27, 2018. [25]

On March 16, 2020, Sony Pictures Television suspended production of the third season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [26] On May 6, 2020, CBS renewed the series for a fourth season [27] which was set to be a mid-season premiere. [28] However, on July 14 it was announced that it would switch places with Survivor , and premiered on November 11, 2020. [29] [30] On April 15, 2021, CBS renewed the series for a fifth season which premiered on October 1, 2021. [31] [32] On April 8, 2022, CBS renewed the series for a sixth season which premiered on October 7, 2022. [3] [4] On May 5, 2023, CBS canceled the series after six seasons. [33] A few days later, CBS reversed its decision and renewed S.W.A.T. for a seventh and final season. [7] The seventh and final season premiered on February 16, 2024. [8] On April 11, 2024, CBS reversed its decision of the seventh season being the final season and renewed the series for an eighth season. [9]

Casting

In February 2017, Shemar Moore was announced as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, [34] alongside new co-stars Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, who was originally named Brian Gamble, [35] and Lina Esco as Christina "Chris" Alonso, who also originally named Sanchez. [35] Several additional cast members were announced in March 2017. Jay Harrington plays Officer Deacon Kay, [36] Alex Russell is James "Jim" Street, [37] and finally, Peter Onorati was cast as Jeff Mumford. [38] On September 21, 2017, David Lim was cast in the role of Hondo's new co-member Victor Tan and was later promoted to series regular status for first season. [39] On October 4, 2019, Stephanie Sigman announced her departure from the show and was subsequently replaced by Amy Farrington as series regular beginning with season three. [40] On January 26, 2024, Anna Enger Ritch was cast in the role of Zoe Powell and has later promoted to series regular status for the final season. [41]

Filming

Filming on the fourth season began on August 4, 2020. [42] [43]

Broadcast and release

Sony Pictures Television distribute the series internationally. The show airs on Sunday nights on Sky Max in the United Kingdom. [44] The show made its We TV debut on November 12, 2023. [45] The show airs on Wednesday nights on AXN Asia in the Southeast Asia. The series streams on Netflix in the United States.

Reception

Critical response

Season One garnered a mixed response from critics, with the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 48% approval rating for the season, with an average rating of 4.6/10 based on 27 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Despite a commanding, charming performance from Shemar Moore, S.W.A.T. remains a simple procedural overrun with clichés." [46] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 45 out of 100 based on 12 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews". [47]
