Prof. S. Krishnaswamy was an Indian biologist, academician and a Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). [1]

Revolution in biological sciences in India

A pioneer in the unification of several biological sciences fields; in 1967, Krishnaswamy founded India's first integrated department of biology in Madurai Kamaraj University. [2] Early in the 1960s, the Madurai Kamaraj University's School of Biological Sciences began in modest fashion as the PG extension centre of the Madurai campus of the University of Madras' Zoology Department. Krishnaswamy, also referred to as SK, was the one in charge. He had a lot of dreams and visions. He conceptualised the idea of teaching Biology as an integrated field during that time, and possibly even now when the education of life sciences is divided into Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, etc. In SK's view, the fields of botany, zoology and other sciences are simply diverse perspectives on the living world. He believed that examining living things as a whole was more significant than just looking at plants or animals separately. In 1966, SK established the Department of Biological Sciences, the nation's first integrated Department, when the PG extension centre became the Madurai University (later Madurai Kamaraj). After only ten years, the UGC Expert Committee recommended that the Department of Biological Sciences be renamed the School of Biological Sciences (SBS). [3]

While the Agronomy; Horticulture; Animal Husbandry; Industrial Arts and Drawing; and Bacteriology programs all came from the College of Applied Science the Botany; and Zoology and Entomology programs came from the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan is an emeritus professor and former director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences. On 26 March 2018, the Government of India appointed him as the principal scientific adviser to succeed Dr. R Chidamabaram. His term as Principal Scientific Adviser ended on April 2, 2022. In 2012, he was elected a fellow of The Royal Society and in April 2014 he was elected as a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He was conferred the Padma Shri on 26 January 2013 and is also a recipient of the Infosys Prize in the life sciences category in 2009.

Mohan Rao Chintalagiri is an Indian molecular biologist renowned for his contributions to the fields of biophysics and molecular biology. Born on January 19, 1954, in Huzurabad, Hyderabad State, India, Rao has earned international recognition for his work on molecular chaperones as well as his contribution to the field of photoacoustic spectroscopy in health and disease. He is a former Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and served as a CSIR-Distinguished Scientist. He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1999, the highest science honor in India.

Sathees C. Raghavan is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He is from Kannur, Kerala. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology, the highest science award in India, for the year 2013 in the biological science category. He was awarded the prize for his research work on novel DNA repair inhibitors that can target cancer cells. He received his BSc in Zoology from Payyannur College, Payyannur, MSc in Zoology with Entomology Specialization from University Center, Calicut University, Calicut, and PhD in Zoology from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi India in 2000. He completed postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California Los Angeles from 1999 to 2006. His main research interests are cancer genetics, genomic instability, DNA repair, and recombination. Raghavan played the important role of convener of the lecture workshop on Recent Advances in Biotechnology of Health and Disease (BHD-2011) organized by Madurai Kamaraj University in 2011.

Dorairajan Balasubramanian, popularly known as Professor Balu, is an Indian biophysical chemist and ocular biochemist. He is a former President of Indian Academy of Sciences and a director of research at the Prof. Brien Holden Eye Research Centre of L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Dipankar Chatterji is an Indian molecular biologist and the Honorary Professor at Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, a multidisciplinary research institute under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. He is known for his pioneering research on bacterial transcription. He is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and is an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Kuppamuthu Dharmalingam is an Indian proteomicist, geneticist, academic and the founder of Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics at Madurai Kamaraj University. He is known for his contributions in the fields of eye disease proteomics and mutagenic DNA repair in Escherichia coli. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. Siddhartha Roy is an Indian structural biologist, biophysicist, former director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology and the former director (officiating) of Bose Institute. Widely known for his studies on bacteriophage lambda and protein synthesis, he is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. In 1999, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, for his contributions to Biological sciences.

Tapas Kumar Kundu is an Indian molecular biologist, academician and at present the Director of Central Drug Research Institute, a prestigious research institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lucknow. He is the head of the Transcription and Disease Laboratory of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. He is known for his studies on the regulation of Gene expression and his contributions in cancer diagnostics and the development of new drug candidates for cancer and AIDS therapeutics. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences, India and a J. C. Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2005, for his contributions to biological sciences. He is also a recipient of the National Bioscience Award for Career Development of the Department of Biotechnology.

Karuppannan Veluthambi is an Indian molecular biologist, plant biotechnologist and a former Professor and INSA-Senior Scientist at the School of Biotechnology (SBT) of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU).

Veerappan Muthukkaruppan or VR. Muthukaruppan, also known as Dr. VRM, is an Indian immunologist. He worked for more than three decades as a professor of immunology at Madurai Kamaraj University. His primary research interests have been in the creation of potential vaccines and the use of purified porine for the diagnosis of murine typhoid, for which he has also created a number of monoclonal antibodies. Muthukkaruppan has researched the pathogenesis of Eales disease while attending Madurai Kamaraj University in association with Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai. As a result, he accepted an invitation to become the Aravind Medical Research Foundation's Director of Research in 1999 and to set up a lab for fundamental studies on eye illnesses. His research interests include the discovery of unique markers for human corneal epithelial stem cells, the immunology and aetiology of ocular inflammation linked to leptospirosis, the prevention of posterior capsular opacification, and the pathogenic mechanisms underlying diabetic retinopathy and Eales disease. From 1994 until 1997, Muthukkaruppan served as the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu's Bharathidasan University. The Indian Immunology Society elected him as its President from 1981 to 1982.

Kunthala Jayaraman, an Indian biotechnologist, is often regarded as the 'Mother of Industrial Biotechnology Education in the world'. Jayaraman, often referred to as KJ, is credited with establishing a harmonious balance among science, engineering, and technology at Anna University, in the field of industrial biotechnology. At the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, she earned a degree in biochemistry. She was also a distinguished faculty in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). She along with her associate were the first discoverers of larvicidal toxin producing gene in Bacillus sphaericus in 1984 which was a major breakthrough in conquering mosquito larvae using new biopesticide. Further it was strengthened with discovery of another toxic protein producing gene after four years by her team which became a milestone in developing Biocide-S, an environmentally safe biotechnological toxin efficient in killing mosquito larvae, at Centre for Biotechnology (CBT) in Anna University. While at MKU, she was the instrumental to conduct the WHO Conference and International Training Programme. In MKU, she was mentored and inspired by S. Ramachandran, along with Kuppamuthu Dharmalingam, to write text books in biotechnology. In 2022, in the honour of Dr. Kunthala Jayaraman, The Academy of Sciences of Chennai conducted Kunthala Jayaraman Distinguished Lecture on “Disruptive reform in higher education and translational research” and it was delivered by Prof. Dr. P. Kaliraj, Professor of Eminence, Anna University and Former Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

Balasubramaniem Ashokkumar is an Indian geneticist who serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Genetic Engineering of School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University. He is best noted for his works on rare genetic disorders of metabolism within South Indian population and rare neurological disorder like Madras motor neuron disease (MMND). In 2021, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu honoured him with the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA), the highest science award in the state for his groundbreaking research on MMND. In 2011, he was also awarded the Young Investigator award at the "International conference on 'Environment, Genes, Health and Disease-2011" conducted by Bharathiar University. He was also a recipient of international fellowship for Young Biomedical Scientists from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for 2016-2017. He served as Editorial Board member at Journal of Neurology Forecast, Annals of Medical Case Reports, SM Journal of Genetic Syndromes and Gene Therapy, International Journal of Cancer Biology, Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and International Journal of Science and Technology. Besides being a Life Member of reputed organizations like The Biotech Research Society (BSRI) and Society fror Biological Chemists, Bangalore, he is also an elected member of European Federation of Biotechnology, Spain since 2005. He was also involved in developing one of the fastest COVID-19 diagnostic kits along with Dr. T. Arockiadoss for which he came into fame in 2021.

Ganesan Kumaresan is an Indian biologist who serves as a Professor and Head of the Department of Genetics of School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University.

Jayaprakash Rajendhran is an Indian biologist specialised in microbiology, genetics and genomics. He is noted for his works in the field of microbial genomics, metagenomics, human microbiomics and host-pathogen interactions. He works as an assistant professor at the Department of Genetics of School of Biological Sciences (SBS) of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU). He is also an editorial board member of Journal of Genetics and Genomics. He is one of the Editorial Board Members of Journal of Microbiology and Genetics as well. Rajendhran is also elected Member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), Biotechnology Research Society of India (BRSI) and Aqua-Terr Society for Biological Sciences (ATSBS).
