SHoP Architects is an architecture firm in Lower Manhattan, New York City, with projects located on five continents. [2] [3] Led by four principals, [1] the firm provides services to residences, commercial buildings, schools and cultural institutions, as well as large-scale master plans. [4]

SHoP stands for Sharples Holden and Pasquarelli. Founded in 1996 by Gregg Pasquarelli, Christopher Sharples, Coren Sharples, Kimberly Holden, and William Sharples, the firm has approximately 180 employees. Its work has been exhibited internationally and included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. [5] Its first monograph, Out of Practice, was published in 2012 by the Monacelli Press. [6]

Work

The firm is known for its designs of the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, New York, its contract with the Howard Hughes Corporation to develop the South Street Seaport, and the design of 111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower. [7] [8] [9] [10] The Steinway Tower is one of several projects SHoP has designed in collaboration with JDS Development Group. Other buildings include the American Copper Buildings and 9 DeKalb Avenue, also known as the Brooklyn Tower. [11] [12]

It has also designed the Museum of Sex, [5] a renovation of Governors Island, and the expansion of the Google headquarters in Silicon Valley, California.

SHoP is also known for its work on large-scale development projects. These include the Domino Sugar Factory redevelopment, [13] Essex Crossing, [14] and Schuylkill Yards. [15]

Awards and honors

In 2014, SHoP was named Fast Company magazine's "Most Innovative Architecture Firm in the World", [16] and one of its "Most Innovative Companies in the World" for its policy of accepting equity in projects, rather than traditional payment, in exchange for services, as well as for its use of modular construction methods. [17]

SHoP Architects' awards also include the 2009 National Design Award for Architecture Design from the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, [18] the Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards, and awards from the American Institute of Architects' New York City and New York State chapters.

Criticism

Justin Davidson, the architecture critic for New York magazine, called the firm "ubiquitous" and criticized its plan with the Howard Hughes Corporation for the South Street Seaport, saying its single tower creates "a new barrier between the seaport and the world beyond." He writes that both the developer and the firm need to understand the area's "benign shabbiness" and not "set a new precedent [of] claiming the waterfront for residences." [19]

Peter Morgan Pennoyer FAIA is an American architect and the principal of Peter Pennoyer Architects, an architecture firm based in New York City. Pennoyer, his four partners and his fifty associates have an international practice in traditional and classical architecture, or New Classical Architecture. Many of the firm's institutional and commercial projects involve historic buildings, and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art has stated that the firm's strength is in "deftly fusing history and creative invention into timeless contemporary designs."

Slade Architecture is a New York City based architecture and design firm founded in 2002 by Hayes and James Slade. The firm has completed a diverse range of domestic and international projects. Its work has been exhibited and published widely. The Architectural League of New York selected Slade Architecture as a winner of its 2010 Emerging Voices, an annual invited competition for North American firms and individuals with distinct design voices and significant bodies of realized work. Slade Architecture was selected by the New York City Department of Design & Construction to participate in its Excellence in Design and Construction Program in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2016.

Annabelle Selldorf is a German-born architect and founding principal of Selldorf Architects, a New York City-based architecture practice. She is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and the recipient of the 2016 AIANY Medal of Honor. Her projects include the Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility, Neue Galerie New York, The Rubell Museum, a renovation of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, David Zwirner's 20th Street Gallery, The Mwabwindo School, 21 East 12th Street, 200 11th Avenue, 10 Bond Street, and several buildings for the LUMA Foundation's contemporary art center in Arles, France.

Mikyoung Kim, FASLA is an American landscape architect, urban designer, and founding principal of Mikyoung Kim Design. Kim has received the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Award and the American Society of Landscape Architects National Design Medal. Her studio was named by Fast Company as one of the world's most innovative architecture firms.

The year 2016 in architecture involved some significant architectural events and new buildings.

111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower, is a supertall residential skyscraper in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Developed by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group, it is situated along Billionaires' Row on the north side of 57th Street near Sixth Avenue. The main portion of the building is an 84-story, 1,428-foot (435-meter) tower designed by SHoP Architects and completed in 2021. Preserved at the base is the 16-story Steinway Building, a former Steinway & Sons store designed by Warren and Wetmore and completed in 1925, which originally carried the address 111 West 57th Street.

CannonDesign is a global architecture, engineering and consulting practice that provides services for a range of project types, including hospitals and medical centers, corporate headquarters and commercial office buildings, higher education and PK-12 education facilities, hotels and hospitality, mixed-use, sports facilities, and science and research buildings. Brad Lukanic has been the CEO of the employee-owned firm since 2015. In 2017 and 2019, Fast Company named CannonDesign one of the 10 most innovative architecture firms in the world.

Hill West Architects is a New York City based architecture firm which works on the planning and design of high-rise residential and hospitality buildings, retail structures and multi-use complexes. They have participated in the design of prominent structures in the New York City metropolitan area. The firm was founded in 2009 by Alan Goldstein, L. Stephen Hill and David West.

The Copper are a pair of luxury residential skyscrapers in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The buildings were developed by JDS Development and were designed by SHoP Architects with interiors by SHoP and K&Co. The buildings are one of several major collaborations between JDS and SHoP; others include 111 West 57th Street, also in Manhattan, and The Brooklyn Tower in Brooklyn.

Hariri & Hariri Architecture is an architecture and design firm based in New York. Founded in 1986 by sisters Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri, the firm specializes in modern and technologically inspired design.

Krista Ninivaggi is a New York-based interior designer who primarily works in hospitality design. She is one of the few designers named by Contract Magazine as its Designer of the Year while still in her 30s. During her time at Rockwell Group and AvroKO, she focused on restaurant design, but has since expanded her portfolio to include art design and office spaces.

Centerbrook Architects & Planners is an American architecture firm founded in 1975 and based in Centerbrook, Connecticut. Centerbrook is one of 37 active firms nationwide to have won the Architecture Firm Award, annually bestowed by the American Institute of Architects.
