Filio was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Njong in 1944 by Stettiner Vulkan Werft AG, Stettin, Germany for Deutsche Afrika-Linien, Hamburg Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garland. She was sold in 1946 and was renamed Sheldrake. She was sold to Liberia in 1959 and renamed Salamstar. Sold to Greece in 1960 and renamed Ambelos. She was sold in 1961 and renamed Marmina. A final sale in 1968 saw her renamed Filio. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.

Description

The ship was 87.66 m (287 ft 7 in) long, with a beam of 13.51 m (44 ft 4 in). She had a depth of 4.80 m (15 ft 9 in), and a draught of 5.59 m (18 ft 4 in). She was assessed as 1,925  GRT, 937  NRT, [1] 3,200  DWT. [2]

The ship was propelled by a compound steam engine, which had two cylinders of 42 cm (16+916 in) and two cylinders of 90 cm (35+716 in) diameter by 90 cm (35+716 in) inches stroke. The engine was built by Stettiner Vulkan Werft AG. [1] Rated at 1,200IHP, it drove a single screw propeller and could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h). [2]

History

Njong was a Hansa A Type cargo ship built in 1944 as yard number 28 by Stettiner Vulkan Werft AG, Stettin, Germany for Deutsche Afrika-Linien, Hamburg, Germany. [2] [3] She was launched in January 1944 and completed in December. [2] Her port of registry was Hamburg. [3]

In May 1945, Njong was seized as a prize of war at Flensburg. She was passed to the Ministry of War Transport and was renamed Empire Garland. [3] The Code Letters GJLT and United Kingdom Official Number 180609 were allocated. Her port of registry was London and she was operated under the management of the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co. Ltd. [1]

In 1947, Empire Garland was sold to the General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and was renamed Sheldrake. [3] In May 1958, a wages dispute amongst the crew whilst she was at Montreal, Canada meant that a new crew had to be flown out. Eighteen crewmen were charged with refusing to sail. [4]

In 1958, Sheldrake was sold to Johal Navigation Ltd, Monrovia, Liberia and was renamed Salamstar. She was sold in 1961 to Johal Navigation Ltd, Piraeus, Greece and renamed Ambelos. She was sold later that year to N J Goumas, Piraeus and was renamed Marmina. She was sold to Constantine Raikos & Filiou Raikou, Piraeus in 1968 and renamed Filio. She arrived at Aspropyrgos, Greece on 15 June 1972 for scrapping by N Tzonis. [2]

I.P. Suhr was a 1,649 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1926 by Ostseewerft AG, Stettin as Siegmund for German owners. After a sale in 1929 she was renamed Thielbek. A further sale in 1939 saw her renamed Ingrid Traber. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condover. In 1946, she was passed to the Norwegian Government and renamed Fornes. She was sold into merchant service in 1948 and renamed I.P. Suhr, serving until December 1950 when she capsized and sank.

Borussia was a 948 GRT coaster that was built in 1912 by Nüscke & Co, Stettin for German owners. She was renamed Timandra in 1939. She was seized by the Allies at Rendsburg in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Confal. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Woodwren. She was renamed Artemis in 1953 and hulked. The hulk was scrapped in 1960.

Gisela L M Russ was a 1,175 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Consort. In 1946, she was sold to the Greek Government and renamed Volos and then sold and renamed Marios II in 1948. She served until she sank in 1959 following a boiler explosion.

Dollart was a 535 GRT coaster that was built in 1912 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constancy. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Polzeath. In 1951, she was sold to Turkey and renamed Meltem. Further sales saw her renamed Yener 9 in 1956 and Yarasli in 1959. She went missing in the Ionian Sea in January 1961.

Wilhelm Russ was a 997 GRT coaster that was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies at Eckernförde, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Cony. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Elsie Beth. In 1950, she was sold back to her original managers and renamed Wilhelm Russ. She served until 1958 when she was scrapped.

Lowland was a 1,923 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1944 as Kattenturm by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Eden. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Lowland. A sale to a Bermudan owner in 1959 saw her renamed Mary Enid. She was sold to a Greek owner in 1963 and renamed Stelianos and then Marynik following another sale in 1964. In 1967, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Euphipides, serving until she was scrapped in 1969.

Admiral Hardy was a 1,929 GRT Hansa A type cargo ship that was built in 1944 by Stettiner Oderwerke, Stettin, Germany as Michael Ferdinand for Hugo Ferdinand Dampschiffs Reederi. She was seized in 1945 as a war prize and taken over by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Farrar. In 1949, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Admiral Hardy. She was sold to Norway in 1955. In 1965, she was sold to Panama and renamed Dumai Trader, serving until 1967 when she was scrapped.

Sukhumi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Benue in 1944 by A Vuyk & Zonen, Capelle aan den Ijssel, Overijssel, Netherlands for the Deutsche Afrika Linien, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gable. Volochaevsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserwald in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Norddeutsche Lloyd, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galveston. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Volochaevsk. She served until 1973, when she was scrapped.

Olsztyn was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Imkenturm in 1944 by Werf de Noord, Alblasserdam, Netherlands for DDG Hansa, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Feodosia. Sold to Poland in 1947, she was renamed Olsztyn. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.

SS <i>Auriga</i> (1944)

Auriga was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Adamsturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschifffarts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Baltanglia. She was renamed Baltic Pine in 1952. Sold to Greece in 1954, and renamed Germania, she was declared a constructive total loss following a collision in 1955. Sold to Germany, she was repaired and renamed Auriga. She served until 1965, when she was scrapped.

Ribinsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Hendrik Fisser VI in 1943 by NV Werft Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands for Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garner. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Ribinsk. She served until 1975, when she was scrapped.

SS <i>Aghios Nectarios</i>

Aghios Nectarios was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Kalliope in 1944 by NV Koninklijk Maatschappij de Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands for Neptun Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garrison. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Bengore Head. She was sold to Greece in 1967 and renamed Aghios Nectarios. Following a sale to Cyprus in 1971, she served until 1974, when she was scrapped.

Khalda was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Tiefland in 1943 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft A/S & Co K, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the British Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatehouse. She was sold to Canada in 1947 and was renamed Gulfport. She was sold to Liberia in 1964 and was renamed Stefani, then Agia Marina in 1966. She was sold to Greece in 1967 and renamed Bright. Sold in 1969 to Panama and renamed Khalda, she was arrested in 1974. Sold to Ethiopia in 1977, she was scrapped in 1982.

SS <i>Vorios Hellas</i>

Vorios Hellas was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Sanga in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Deutsche Afrika Linie, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatwick. She was allocated to Greece in 1947 and was renamed Vorios Hellas. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1948. She was sold and scrapped in 1974.

Rodopi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Setubal in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gavel. She was allocated to Greece in 1945 and was renamed Rodopi. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1949. She was scrapped in 1974.
